It never made sense to me that Eva 00 had part Rei's soul, it made more sense that it had Dr. Akagi's soul (Ritsuko Akagi mother). It always seemed to me like when it went berserk during its activation test and started punching the glass was because Gendo was there and either he killed her or had her killed because she killed the first Rei.

I also interpretated that Rei is the artificial human incarnation of ancient Lilith by using Yui's DNA, It has no individuality (soul) but has Yui's escense (and connection to her soul). Rei develops her individuality by mirroring Yui emotions: calling Akagi an old hag (she also had a relation with Gendo), caring about Gendo whlie keeping he's glasses and by developing a motherhood toward Shinji, rejecting the terrible father Gendo and finally assuming the giant body and honoring Shinji giving him the final choice. At the end, ancient Lilith devolps a personality ( individuality, soul) with the capacity to emotionaly relate to Shinji. Lilith's faceless crucified body in terminal Dogma represents the japanese idea of collectivity, perceived by the author as lacking individuality and emotions, both good and bad , especially the concept of evil and the suffering experienced by japanese otaku; social anxiety. I understood that individuality, soul, your AT field; is the fruit of knowledge that creates good and evil. Kaworu was similarly the incarneted Adam that also developed individuality, thus gainning the fruit of knowlegde and as a final result he admired so much the emotions that decided to sacrife himself to preserve it, making his own personality so concret up to the point of being proud to decide his own end, claiming that to choose how one dies is the only true freedom. That's why unity 0 (Akagi) can't sync well with Rei, she's like Yui. Akagi also hated Hitsuko because her daughter felt in love with Gendo, and Gendo probably used Akagi's soul to give an AT field to unity 00.

@@FrozenAuroras Dr. Akagi strangled the first Rei when that clone was a kid. Rei had told Dr. Akagi that Gendo would call her an old hag whenever she wasn't around. She allegedly threw herself off a landing after she realized what she did and collided with the Magi system and died. But the vibe I got from that was that Gendo had her killed for that, either he had someone else do it or he did it himself.

Agreed with the OP. Unit 00 flipping out like that, sure seemed like it was triggered by Gendo's presence. Possibly over his betrayal.

00 wasn't "equipped" with an N² (said N-two, not squared) mine, Rei took one on her way from thr cradle to the floor of the Geofront. People think she blew another one up to destroy the ring of light angel and save Shinji from corruption, but that's not right. Rei causes the core of 00 to implode, which then releases all the energy of 00, the angel and it's S2 engine, and whatever insane tech they've grafted into 00.

Ah I see Unit 00 was never meant to gain an S2 engine, Unit 01 was a special case as it forced itself to gain the consumer S2 Engine. Unit 00 self destructed from its core reaching its capacity

In other words Rei became God which means back during episode 1. Where Shinji was at the telephone booth when for a brief second he saw Rei staring at him from the street. Despite both weren't formally introduced to each other yet. Future Rei was already making some hints and indications of the inevitable future that is to come.

@@ducklett01god It was not... Rei's mind itself is fragmented from knowing she is the clone of a clone. That is why unit 00 acts crazy, since it is the first EVA made from Adam it cannot handle the emotional instability.

No one. Only EVA 01 has a "soul" in it. Well all EVA have a "soul" but only 01 has a human one, and by "soul" I mean mind with a AT field. Well technically the mind (soul) of Shinji's mother fused with the 01 unit's mind, which is what happens to Shinji when his AT field dissipates inside 01. The reason it appears with a shape Shinji sees as his mother is because that would help Shinji calm down. That can also be seen in the movie when Rei AT field covers the earth and she begans to assimilate every human mind into her own.
