How many people could sing with such a crystal clear, gorgeous tone in their voice when they are feeling well????? Not many. But Eva does this transformative performance with a cold?? Truly remarkable. One thing we can all be thankful for, is that she had a passion for music and figured out a way to pursue it , and develop a local following. That resulted in these most precious video moments that we can enjoy forever. She lives on musically and in our hearts. 🤗💖

She directed the song back to its roots: Autumn Leaves was initially a sad french song called Les Feuilles Mortes, before it was transformed in the US into a more jazzy hit. I don’t believe Eva knew this but her rendition is in the spirit of the original, even if she deconstructed/reconstructed it entirely. Eva was such a music genius!

Well sir you got to witness the most amazing vocal moment in recorded history. You handled it just as it should be. In simple awe with nothing to say. She’s just beyond words. She speaks to all who listen and takes you on her journey unlike any of the greatest vocalists I’ve ever experienced and I’m an old man. Wow! What a gift Eva is. Thank you Eva! Thank you so much.

There is just such honesty in her singing. She doesn't hold back, but she also doesn't over sing. She just puts it all out there. Sort of a mix between honest strength and vulnerability.

There’s an amazing YT called one night that changed everything, where they got together the members of Eva’s band who played this concert and talk about Eva and that night. They only had this one opportunity to get the live recording right, and the piano player talks about how nervous he was playing that solo. He played as simply as he could because he didn’t want to make a mistake and ruin the recording. It fits so perfectly. For everyone who loves Eva and enjoys this handful of live recordings we have of that wondrous night, I highly recommend watching that video!

Fields of Gold. Do it. Sting was so impressed that he said it was how envisioned it while he was writing it. And that he wouldn't sing it live anymore; now that's saying something, as he did it pretty darn well… 😉 And you should check out her chops with jazz. Stormy Monday. Ain't Doin Too Bad. Or some blues like Something's Got A Hold On Me.

I found Eva Cassidy a few years ago. Absolutely soulful voice and skilled guitarist. I have her CD and you can just sit back and feel the soul and heart without seeing the videos. Huge loss. Sad that she didn’t get to enjoy her success before cancer took her at such a young age. Cancer doesn’t discriminate and my heart hurts when a musician is diagnosed!!!!❤💔

I just read that the piano break was not planned. She asked pianist Lenny Williams to sit in, and they didn't even discuss what key it would be in, or for when he should come in. It was just on the fly...He said he was nervous, and he thought the key was a little weird, and even though he knew the song well, and played it many times, he never did with Eva..He said she looked over at him (you can see her do it here) as if to say, "you'd better come in now because I don't have guitar solo ready" and that's exactly when he came in, and played it flawlessly.

Eva sang this song live at Blues Alley in D.C. in 1996...she was very sick and in pain from advanced stage cancer at the time which was likely the reason for the break in her voice during the last line of the song, yet she still delivered an amazing performance. Eva died at age 33 shortly after this was recorded. Since her death all of her previously unheard recordings have been released on several CD's and download and streaming services. Every one of her songs is well worth having and listening to...Eva was truly an old soul and a deeply emotional and powerful singer.

Another great Eva Cassidy song is Fields Of Gold. The original version was sung by Sting. Eva Cassidy - Fields Of Gold, kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4a5m52ZhLp9gqc Sting wrote the track after he bought a house near a barley field. The sunsets and the colours of the field helped inspire the lyrics, along with his love for his wife Trudie Styler, whom he married in 1992. In his book Lyrics By Sting, the singer described the view from his 16th-century Wiltshire manor house, which inspired the song: "In England, our house is surrounded by barley fields, and in the summer it's fascinating to watch the wind moving over the shimmering surface, like waves on an ocean of gold. "There's something inherently sexy about the sight, something primal, as if the wind were making love to the barley. I'm sure that the lovers have made promises here, their bonds strengthened by the comforting cycle of the seasons." The song can be seen about a full romance from beginning to end. The story of the song is chronological in nature and is about courtship, marriage, and lastly, death. The two people in the song meet, court, and fall in love. Their romance is so strong that even the sky (or Heaven) is jealous of their relationship ("jealous sky"). Eventually, he dies and tells his lover that they will never forget their time together. Whenever she thinks of him, he wants to be remembered while she walks in fields of gold (or barley).

Please watch this documentary about this weekend at Blues Alley. Her band mates put this together a few years ago to reminisce about Eva and the events surrounding the audio and video recordings. The piano player recalls that little solo he has to improvise in Autumn Leaves. He was a little nervous because she played it in an obscure key he had not played it in before. Lots of black keys. As far as her being sick, I don’t remember them talking about that. But maybe. Fans say that about any singer that has a break in their voice during a song they think is a mistake. Then it gets repeated forever as truth. Ok I rewatched the documentary. She did have a cold. But her main partner mentioned she had been playing guitar about 6 years at this point. She knew some when they got together as a band, but they needed her to be able to play better to contribute to the band that way. So she worked hard to become a very good guitarist. Such a tragedy she died so relatively young. I see you did a reaction to the mashup with her and Angelina Jordan singing Fields of Gold. It’s just beautiful, needless to say.
