Talk about a small world...Eva grew up around Oxon Hill and Camp Springs, Md. She was 7 years younger than me, but I too grew up in those areas. She worked in a plant nursery just down the street from where my parents lived and where I hung out in a club called Machelle's on the same street as the nursery. I was well into my 20's by then, so she may have been spending time in some of the places I frequented, although she seemed to be somewhat reserved. I've racked my brain over the years trying to recall if I'd ever seen that beautiful face. I didn't realize all this when I first heard 'Over the Rainbow' and instantly became addicted to her music. Her beautiful covers of 'Autumn Leaves' and 'Fields of Gold' were spellbinding. I later discovered that Chuck Brown...the DC GoGo King, had talked her into appearing at Blues Alley and her appearance was recorded. If I'm not mistaken, Chuck Brown frequently played at the Knights of Columbus Hall on the border of S.E. Washington DC and PG County Md. My Father worked there and I worked there on weekends clearing and setting up tables for breakfast. What a talent she was! All of the rehashed junk that's in the theatres these days...it just boggles the mind that her story has not been highlighted. She's the first person I want to meet when I exit this life!

Paul Simon met Kathleen Mary “Kathy” Chitty at the very first English folk club in which he played, the Railway Inn Folk Club in Brentwood, Essex, on 12th April, 1964. Kathy who worked there was then 17, Paul was 22, and it appears to have been love at first sight. A few weeks later Simon wrote "Homeward Bound" as he sat on Widnes Railway Station waiting for the train that would take him back to her. There's a plaque at the station recalling this event. Later that year he invited her to the US where they toured around mainly by bus. Kathy returned to England on her own with Simon returning to her some weeks later. During this separation he wrote "America", clearly a love song to Kathy: "Kathy, I'm lost," I said, though I knew she was sleeping "I'm empty and aching and I don't know why" During their separation he also wrote the immortal "Kathy’s Song", one of the most beautiful love songs ever written: I gaze beyond the rain-drenched streets To England where my heart lies. My mind's distracted and diffused My thoughts are many miles away They lie with you when you're asleep And kiss you when you start your day. When he returned to London he recorded the album "The Paul Simon Songbook" that included Kathy’s Song, and had a photo of Simon and Kathy on the cover. In the meantime, "The Sound of Silence" started to receive major air-play in America eventually becoming No 1 in the US charts in 1965. Simon felt the need to return to the US to continue his career but this meant splitting up with Kathy because she wanted no part of the crazy US music scene. Kathy later married and brought up three children in a remote mountain village in North Wales where she still lives - she is now a grandmother. Now well into his 70s, Simon recalls their months together with great tenderness and says it was "by far the most peaceful time of my life". In fact he didn't hear from her for over 20 years but after the success of "Graceland" she wrote to congratulate him. When, in 1991, Simon toured the UK, Kathy and her family attended his show in Sheffield. They met again in July 2004 after his "Old Friends Reunion Tour" stop at Hyde Park in London (where her three children now live).

This song reminds me that somehow someway we do not suffer alone, that we all have a kindred spirit to help us, and the best thing we can do in life is to share who we are

+Patrick Lippert Well said, Patrick! There are many aspects of humanity that tie us all together. At certain points in our lives, we all travel down many similar roads.

But even some of our loved ones don't like who we are and so we hide.

My only regret in life will be that I never had the chance to see Eva sing live. She sings me to sleep most nights, truly missed ❤️

How extraordinary to be immortalised in such a beautiful song. Kathy must truly have been the love of Paul Simon's life.

She was at the time. (She is also mentioned in ""America."")She used to hold the hat when Paul and Art were buskng. She didn't like the fame and didn't want to move to the US. She spent her life as a school teacher. Last I heard she was still with us.

"Kathy's Song" I hear the drizzle of the rain Like a memory it falls Soft and warm, continuing Tapping on my roof and walls My mind's distracted and confused My thoughts are many miles away They lie with you when you're asleep And kiss you when you start your day And as I watch the drops of rain Weave their weary paths and die I know that I am like the rain There but for the grace of you go I

I cannot understand an angel comes to Earth singing like this and is allowed to ever die. Next to Paul's version, this is the best and most heart inspiring version ever made! I am humbled!

Actually She missed several verses..2 or 3 verses I think... Meaning She did just the first two verses and the last verse.. out of 6 verses..I believe, from memory. It was one of my favourites.. And I taught myself to pick & play it, S&G style.. as is was issued, originally, in their 1965 album - titled - Sounds of Silence.. A beautiful album, compilation of their early songs, including 'April - come she will..' We were of that 60s generation, in university.. living our lives Thru that emerging musical revolution.. folk, rock, protest, Woodstock, Vietnam War protests, Red Brigade & Bader Meinhof .. in Europe, Youth Revolution, Flower Power, San Francisco with flowers in your hair.. But lovely soulful rendition by the amazing unique Eva Cassidy.. & amazing plucking / guitaring & chordal progressions, choices.. Exquisite Love from India 🎵

.. Every so often the world is blessed with a rare jewel and Eva was certainly a shining star among them. Having the same name and also a singer/songwriter I have admired her for many years. She has been the warmth in my heart when days are cold and harsh. Whether there is a Heaven or not, I personally can't believe her essence is just gone. She resides in so many hearts, so her spirit lives on. Regarding any comments, there should only be love, because Eva radiated love. So peace and love to all those that find solace in her beautiful voice... .
