I'm an audiophile. And was a guitar player as well. I love vocals. The first time I ever cried while listening to a song it was Eva Cassidy singing. But not this song. It was Autumn leaves. Now maybe only a guitar player would realize this fact about Eva Cassidy. Her guitar playing ability, while she sang like this! That's amazing. She was in a category like nobody else I've ever heard. Check out Autumn Leaves. Take note, all these recordings were live! Unbelievable!

I have followed Eva Cassidy for 10 years and continue to play her music. What gets me about this version is that she didn't know yet that she was dying and yet the tone and the mood she sets seems to indicate that she did know. One word to describe the performance.... Haunting!

I first heard Eva Cassidy’s gorgeous voice in 2002 when Michelle Kwan skated to “Fields of Gold” in the exhibitions, after coming in third to Sarah Hughes. It was especially emotional because Michelle was “supposed” to win and she shed tears as she performed. I’ve been a huge fan of Eva’s music since then.

@@beedeegee9374I remember that skating competition. I'm dating myself lol. I was introduced to Eva when visiting a cousin in New York probably 10 to 20 years ago. The most beautiful voice I ever heard. I have listened to her since when I get the chance. Interestingly, one of my other favorite female vocalists is Angelina Jordan. Angelina is seventeen now and I have been following her for 5 years. Within the past year or two there was a fan made virtual Duo mashup published of Eva and Angelina singing Fields of Gold together! They each have their own voices but it's beautiful.

Judy Garland's version was from a young girl's heart. This is from a woman's heart that has taken some punches. I read a quote from either a relative or friend of hers saying that as tragic as her loss was, in a way, it was perfect that she became an international star after her death. Because she would not have enjoyed the trappings of stardom -- the attention, demands, interviews etc. This way, it was about the music and sharing her gift with the world. Btw, she was also a very talented artist. I think you can still buy some of her drawings and paintings.

(Just my opinion) Because I’m from HI as he is and he’s Native Hawaiian. I’m also from HI, and every time I hear that song I cry, because I now live in OK and not in HI. All of my family is in HI, and the song makes me miss them immensely plus it reminds me of my grandpa. The song is to me like a warm hug like he used to give me all the time. This version is also immensely beautiful and so unique. I love how each artist can make 1 song their own by just playing an instrument differently or changing the tempo.

It continually surprises me with its' elegant nuance and her masterful use of dynamic range. When she hits the note on the second "Some-where" it is like electroshock therapy. After all the subtlety leading up to it, then there is suddenly that POWER! We feel It is her heart and soul that is crying out, and then she quickly returns back to her lower powered voice, which is just as beautiful. An astounding performance. I "discovered" Eva only a couple of years ago while listening to Tommy Emmanuel's acoustic performance of OTR, and there was Eva on the sidebar. Your Reaction was honest. Please never apologize. We are all human with feelings. We don't come here to look for people who can control their feelings so that no one knows how you feel. Yes, we have words to express our feelings but we also just feel them. Eva put herself into her music for only one reason...to express so that others can feel. You did it right.

Sebs, we all have our favorite artists but whoever hears this song by Eva, it will become one of the finest performances they will ever hear in their lifetime The artist I love is Angelina Jordan, and, guess what? Someone put together a mashup of Eva and Angelina singing 'Fields of Gold'. Definitely something you should listen to. Eva and Angelina? It doesn't get any better than that.

Eva Cassidy's rendition of "Tall Trees in Geogia" is an amazing reflection of a relationship in my younger life. (She died at 39, not much older than Eva.) I also love her version of "Danny Boy" above all others.

Perception is reality, and when we experience something outside of our reality, like watching a beautiful, talented, long gone girl singing something that obviously means a lot to her, our Perception is shifted, and our reality follows. You asked why, I hope this helps. And never apologize or feel like you look like an idiot for feeling so deep that it brings tears to your eyes. Life is short, don't waste any part of it shutting down what you feel, you will turn into someone you don't like very much. ❤

She could soar when she needed to soar, but it's the emotion in those low notes that gets me. It reminds me of the Katen Carpenter comment: "the money's in the basement"

Music is the common language of all man. Her changes to this song and the changes to make it more like a lullaby and something your soul pours over you and you can't do ANYTHING but connect. She could be speaking any language and it would still happen. She treated that song with such expertise, it can never be passed.

An extraordinary balladeer, with amazing talent for re-interpreting songs. To get an idea of the range of her talent, give a listen to Stormy Monday on the same album, Live at Blues Alley. Actually, there are no 'fillers' on that disc.

You are so lucky to have heard her in person. I first heard her on WPFW - and I called the station to find out who was singing! I immediately wanted to go hear her but then I found out she had died about a year before. I read up on her and found out she used to ride her bicycle to her gigs. What a treasure.

Fields of Gold playing at a B&N bookstore had me stopped in my tracks. Took me an hour to find someone in the store to tell me who it was. Bought the CD and never looked back. She’s in my fav list now and always. Please listen to this song. PS. No cell phone and Google on hand back then, about 2004ish.

I didn't pay attention to hardly any new musical artists from 1990 until the pandemic began in 2020. I started watching music videos on KZbin and learned of Angelina Jordan and later Eva Cassidy. The two of them are now at the top of my list of favorites, as incredible singer storytellers, conveying tremendous emotion. A fan put together a virtual duet with Eva and Angelina singing "Fields of Gold". Stunningly beautiful. RIP Eva.

@@wilburfinnigan2142 Lucy Thomas is awesome. The majority of people prefer clean singers and Lucy is among the very best. When you see the song title, you know what you will get from Lucy, her incredible tone and pitch. I enjoy listening to her from time to time but I can listen to Angelina all day long and be surprised with her choices for each song. Simply a matter of personal preference.

I lost my ex-husband 2 years ago next month It doesn't feel like he's gone and it's hard To learn to cope when you're grieving , the loss of a loved one that has died of cancer because it's something that we can't stop. I think that is one of the biggest reasons why you reacted the way you did because I felt the same way. I have also had cancerand my daughters. A terrified type of fear makes you want to live each day to its fullest and be grateful for every moment. You have with the people all around you. And you can tell in this woman's voice as she sings. That she was not afraid , but she was brave .God bless her soul 🙏

@@shannonbaillie3244 Thanks for sharing and I am so sorry for your loss. Wishing you and your daughters good health. I highly recommend listening to Angelina Jordan's "Million Miles" which she wrote at age 13 after her grandfather passed. She is 18 now and I am going to see her in concert in Las Vegas on Feb. 29.
