If they can adopt, fine. But biologically, no, they shouldn’t. As of age 35, your fertility starts to decline sharply, and the risks of genetic anomalies and complications during pregnancy goes up exponentially. Don’t play with your health or your child’s unnecessarily.

I agree, I had my son two days after my 22nd birthday. My partner and I had little money and it took both of us much longer to move up the career ladder because juggling a child between us and investing into our jobs was hard. We haven't had anymore kids because just paying for one was so expensive. He is 26 now and we managed to get him through college and yes, we are both still young enough to do things that perhaps other empty nesters can't do so much, but it was a struggle in those early years.

Yeah that is something no one talks about. it’s always “Wait until you are ready” “Do what’s best for your life” “You’ve got plenty of time before you need to make that decision” “There’s nothing wrong with waiting until you are ready you” “You will be able to enjoy it more” In realty you have less time with your kid, while you are still healthy. Not to mention waiting increases the likelihood of having a child with health problems and also an increased risk of Pregnancy complications. Plus both women and men experience have a decreased quality of reproductive material as they age. It gives me vibes of selfishness, of having your cake and eating it too. As a counter point to the health issues that can occur people will say “This is the 21st century you can freeze your eggs” (or if you already have a significant other embryos). Never mind the cost of course.

Joy is a bit misinformed. Yes, female fertility starts dropping in the mid-30s, but the more important thing is the male's sperm health, which actually takes a much more serious nosedive. We don't talk about that though, because fertility is all on the woman, according to society.

I was 30 years old when my husband and I decided we wanted to have a baby. For what ever reason we were having a problem getting pregnant naturally. I went to a fertility doctor and had some unfortunate losses along the way. With 5 pregnancies, only 2 were healthy pregnancies and healthy babies. I’m 40 years old now, my son is 6 and my daughter is 1. Not everyone chooses to be older parents. For some it just works out that way. I would also like to mention the amount of years I’ve been in and out of the fertility clinic has been a lot. Not all women who are there are over 40. You’d be surprised at how many young women have problems with fertility. Age doesn’t always matter.

No mention of health risks in older mothers or the lack of eggs or risks of deformities . 🤔👀
@r.p.4432
@r.p.4432 Ай бұрын
Those risks occur in women in their younger years too. In addition, men’s sperm can also cause deformities. I think it’s ridiculous that we women are forced by society to have children in our 20s based on what you’re saying. Every situation is different. I have friends that miscarried all through their 20s but successfully conceived in their 30s. I have a few cousins with disabilities that were born when their mothers were in their early 20s. Lack of eggs is correct; but everything else you said is not completely correct. I’m glad more women are wise and having children later or not at all. Comments like yours are not helpful in letting women live their lives on their own terms.

@naylas3908
@naylas3908 Ай бұрын
So let’s just ignore the risk of pregnancy past age 35, shall we? Your health as a mom and the risk to your child should be the first consideration. Your fertility starts to decline sharply at age 35, and the risk of genetic anomalies and complications during pregnancies goes up sharply. To this day, doctors still state very clearly that biologically, the best age to get pregnant is in your early twenties. Practically, that’s become impossible for most of us, but waiting until you’re 35 or older to have your first child, is not a good idea.
@missJolie85
@missJolie85 Ай бұрын
The chances for complications and abnormalities goes up, but not sharply - that is an add on word from yourself. While pregnancy after 35 can have a higher risk of certain complications, most people will have smooth pregnancies and healthy babies. A pregnancy after 35 is indeed labeled as "advanced maternal age." But despite common misconceptions, you can still have a smooth pregnancy and a healthy baby after 35. Modern medicine can help people overcome many of those problems, there are extra steps doctors take for both prevention, follow up and screening. Also medical science doesn't go around stating "this is the best age to have children" they are not judgemental like that. What science do say is that +/-25 years of age is when you are most fertile, with a 25-30% chance of pregnancy each month. Furthermore men have not been privy to comparable concerns about their fertility and possible health effects on a pregnancy or the children they father. Older mothers are typically meticulously screened for possible risks to a healthy pregnancy “while the father’s role in childbirth is often ignored or forgotten. There needs to be a greater awareness of the man’s responsibility to reproductive health. Factors like obesity, chronic disease and behaviors like smoking and alcohol consumption could affect the health of a pregnancy.

People always say they were too irresponsible and they can barely take care of themselves, which is very true for some. However, for others, if you happen to get pregnant and decide to go thru with it, you then have no choice! No matter the age. You're forced to grow up and be responsible, and if you care about this child, you'll do what you have to do. I had a baby at 22 at the worst possible time in life for me, but when he popped out everything changed. His dad and i were living in student housing doing whatever. Not caring. But once he came, we understood that we had to create a stable home and life, and we did that. You do what you have to do, not what your age dictates.

I think Joy has a very old-school view of women's fertility. It's a lie that women are super infertile past the age of 30, sure, we're not as fertile, but everyone's fertility decreases with age. As do men's, at the same rate, but they don't get half of the criticism. In fact, older fathers mean a higher chance of birth defects. Don't fall into the trap of staying home and raising kids when you're super young and immature.

I don’t think age is the specific factor so much as the individual and whether or not they are ready at any given point in life. I had my first baby when I was 27- it was planned, my husband and I were financially stable, had good jobs, etc. We were both out of our “party era” and ready to start a family. Meanwhile we had friends and family members the same age who still partied and got blackout drunk every weekend, were financially illiterate, or were on perpetual job hunts. Obviously they weren’t ready for children. Now in our mid-30s a lot of them are wanting to settle down if they haven’t already. And some might still take a while. I love how there are no “rules” anymore!🙌🏼

There is a difference when you have children in your 20s vs 40s. In my 20s it was easy because you have so much energy with children; the negative part about it, is that in your 20s, you always want to go out to party at clubs or hang out with friends to do some drinking over friends house. Now when I had my youngest child, I was about 48-49 years old. You get much more tired compared to 20s & 30s with children. They have a lot of energy. But the difference is I’m more focused on their education, teaching them things, and worried more about my youngest child. My 20s I let older children focus on education themselves.

@@misslanapaulford That may be, but older pregnancies do have a higher tendency for problems, as well as weaker health of the child. Might make it easier on the mother, definitely isn't the best for the child. When they are in their 20's, you'll be in your 60's, practically skipping a generation. 40 was 'over the hill' in the 80's, 90's and still imo. Especially given lifespan tends to stay near 70-80 for most.

@@Alarik52 Right! The youngest mother ever to give birth was Lina Medina from Peru who was only 5 years old and the oldest was an Indian woman who was 74! The ideal ages for pregnancy however, are probably between the ages of 20 to 35.

No, your decision should not be based on somebody else. THIS very thing puts pressure on people and limits them, it's unhealthy. Btw, you forgot to mention - the older the dad, the older the grandparents Some men have kids in their 50s, and they also have parents.

Haven't studies shown the children tend to be healthier the younger the parents (or at minimum, mother) are? It's not just about the delivery time, but also the quality of the production. Older may be better for some mothers, but that doesn't necessarily make it better for the children.

Lying to yourself if you believe your a better parent. Ask the kid if they prefer young or old. Mine were considered old having me in their late 30's. In your 40's that's being selfish

@@benb4481 It's known that the older the parents, the higher likelihood and prevalence of health issues for the child. It is inherently selfish to consider ones own social circumstances before they consider the healthy continuation of their very genetic code. It's a useful tool to have your genetics removed from the population pool though. Worse off children, are less likely to continue your families heritage. This generation is the first in America that the children are ALREADY worse off than the parents, and the "wait till it's better for me" attitude is part (fraction) of the problem. That and the folks that wish they could tax the unborn.

@@benb4481 it's easy, would you rather it was your Grandparents that raised you? Cause that's what it is. You're just telling yourself lies. People that decide to have kids (provided they are capable) after 40 are the most selfish amongst us. Sorry, sounds like your one

@@Alarik52 have you seen the rising percentage of people in their 20s and 30s getting cancer diagnosis? Increased health issues these days are not for the elderly alone. Additionally in a country where there’s barely any support for parents… it is imperative that you consider your ability to provide financially for said kids. The average American is living paycheck to paycheck with barely any financial stability
