Escape With Us

Күн бұрын

We book our first night in Grindavik, near an active volcano showing sings of eruption in Iceland! We get emergency evacuated to a safe house, after being awoken at midnight and 1400 earthquakes struck the area in 24 hours!
We felt a couple of huge earthquakes before we went to sleep, and could feel that they were getting more intense!
This is our story, welcome to the world through our eyes.

Thank you for this real time depiction of what the folks in Grindavik are dealing with. I had the great fortune of vacationing in this spectacular country in May 2023. A dream come true. My heart breaks for the folks from Grindavik. Fingers crossed they will only need to repair some cracks in their roads and replace some broken dish ware. ❤❤❤

This was interesting. Your giggling at the earthquakes in the beginning, irritation when you were woken up to evacuate, then slowly realizing how serious the situation was - then appreciating that the situation for the people potentially losing their homes is much, much more serious than your inconvenience. ♥

@@Escapeists Just stay safe, keep an eye out, use common sense, be polite, and understand the circumstances. I had a strange nightmare as a kid involving trying to warn two guys to flee their van (sleeping in it), a lava flow was coming! Then my brain fast forwarded, one guy did flee, the other did not. He was sleeping when the lava hit, woke up half burned, looked around confused, saw his burned body, and died screaming in agony. Over 20 years and still remember this dream.

Thanks for sharing this. I’m an obsessive observer of Icelandic volcanoes, so I’ve been watching this develop for the last 2 weeks. When things started getting crazy Saturday I was absorbing it all through live cams, chat groups, and news reports. But your first hand experience of the evacuation really brings it down to earth. I’m glad you 2 understood you were there as visitors, and that the consequences for the locals around you were very significant. As I write this the town is still empty, but the damage is still just cracks in roads and buildings. Unfortunately the outlook is not good. I’ve been to Grindavik myself, and hope this turns out for the best, but expect the worst. Safe travels to the 2 of you. May your nights be less shaky in the future.

Human communities and lava don’t mix well. Saw a picture of the gulf course. Yea. Evacuation was a good call regardless what happens. Edit. The new hazard is a sudden few foot tall (?) vertical lifted section of ground in front of collapsed earth. Oh, the cracking roads and a house slowly splitting in half is also a good reason to get everyone out of town. Even if nothing happens, sudden road hazards and possible Home collapse is enough of a reason to get everyone out! Also, this is a vacation you will NEVER FORGET!

14:11 So most of the time the magma just seeps up then solidifies without reaching the surface, and that was what was originally expected. Then a vulcanic eruption southwest of the Blue Lagoon was expected. Then the magma stayed put for a while and the earthquakes died down, but suddenly the magma manages to force its way through new cracks upwards, eastwards and northwards to a fissure that erupted perhaps two thousand years ago, so a eruption was expected north of Grindavík. Unfortunately the magma forced the fissure to expand south just under Grindavík and past it into the sea. Indeed the elderly home was essentially split in half from what I understand. A eruption may occur *anywhere* along the fissure. If it's south of Grindavík in the sea it might be a explosive eruption and lead to disruptions in flights etc. And potentially even Tsunamis. Not exactly great for the harbour of the fishing village nor the buildings. The eruption could potentially happen *inside* the village... That would probably destroy it... It could happen just north of the village, that would øead to lava flowing south towards the village, potentially destroying a lot of buildings, potentially even the harbour (something that would be devastating for the economy of what's after all a fishing village). The best case scenario is a eruption to the north where the lava will flow north around the mountains and down against the defensive dikes around the Blue Lagoon. If lucky that could potentially lead to very little destruction.

Glad you folks are out of harms way. This is why it's always good to be aware of our many earth changes, and to lean into the wisdom offered to us from geologists, and geological enthusiasts. The water in the Blue Lagoon is run off from the power plant that still exists in the area. The power plant provides hot water and heating to the peninsula, if I got this right. If the power plant is wrecked there will be no hot water or heating for the district, which is not good, considering the climate there and winter on its way.

It’s my understanding the quakes are made by moving magma. One commenter mentioned the town was founded over a thousand years ago. My father used to do business there and the people are so interesting and genuinely friendly. I hope the eruption doesn’t destroy the town let alone the blue lagoon(arctic version) and it’s power station. I do believe they use a lot of geothermal energy there.
