Evaluating a Harmonic Damper on a Triumph TR6

Using a piston stop to set TDC on the crank, the marks on the damper are indeed 10 dg offset. I believe this is because the pointer is offset that amount on the timing cover. I had 7 or 8 dampers redone by DD. And I had mine redone later by Wishbone Classics (Kai rebroached a new key way). The key way was damaged by insufficient clamping of the damper. All these dampers had a 36-1 ignition wheel mounted to the back of the outer ring.

How do you tell when one goes bad? In my case, it was when it fell off of my Jeep.

​@@triumphrestoration7403 It was a serendipitous discovery. Either my engine started getting hot, or it was my battery not charging which led me to looking around for the problem. Once in there, the outer ring of the harmonic balancer literally fell off. Sure made troubleshooting a snap. The radiator had to come out for the replacement, but it was untouched.

@@MrWaalkman nice that it fell off right then i stead of on the road I had a wheel come off a pickup truck at an interstate exit back in the 70s. Was disconcerting watching it pass me by as I slowed down....

@@triumphrestoration7403 Yeah, that's happened to me on a '62 Olds that had the aluminum block 215 engine. Not sure whatever happened to that old car. :)
