Kiyomori was 63 when he died so it is hard to say he was unlucky with his death... However, having Shigemori, his fairly capable son die before his was bad luck

The anime Heike Monogatari shows exactly this time period, and does it so well. Heike Monogatari is the name of the poetry describing that time period. The main character is the girl that ended up writing the poetry. Some people dislike the fantasy elements added to the story in the anime, but I don't dislike it, since even western literary works of the time used to be filled with fantasy elements to give it more weight on listener's minds.

The fantasy elements/buddhist elements are part of what makes the original Heike Monogatari an epic, and it helps the story be remembered.

I’d genuinely love to see the rise of the Bushi/Samurai (Heian, Kamakura & Muronachi periods) in the same detail as your Sengoku Jidai series. So many great battles and stories, great content too!

Looking at both videos, what is striking to me is how so much of history is made by flawed and humane people in positions of power, despite the legends made around them. It is both humbling and inspirational at the same time. Thanks for illustrating that point so strongly through these!

For each category the manner in which you described you case lead me to score exactly as you did, except in one case where I slightly gave a more generous 2 while a 1 was given. I don't understand how Taira no Kiyomori can have a perfect leadership score when his family was so distraught after his death and seemed not to know what to do. Also if the populous sees you as a tyrant, then, at least by today's standards, that's bad leadership. A tyrant's vision collapses after their death, but a good leader's continues. Even if I don't agree with that rating, I'm still liking the vid.

I would award Kiyomori a 3/5 in popularity. As he did actually alienate much of the aristocracy and much of Japan against him.However he for decades had lead his clan, his personal powerbase the Taira with a total ironfist. In 100% in command with never any dissent within the Taira clan towards him, but only loyalty.

Shogunate, i'm very surprised but i understand why that you didn't include Taira no Tomomori. He was a believe the commissioner of warfare in the Taira and he was an excellent military general like the man never lost a single battle throughout the Genpei war (other than Dun-no-ura). He pretty much destroyed the will of the Buddhist sohei monks for fighting with the Minamoto during the war by destroying Nara. He was a master with sea warfare and I also believed he came the closest to push the Minamoto back the furthest at the Battle of Yahagi-gawa and secured the Owari province, which later became the Oda's province in the future.

During the Genpei period top of the heads were not shaven. The trend started during the 戦国時代(1465-1600) Some pictures in the video are wrong.

Personally, I think Yoshitsune is "Brawn over brain". I always see Yoshitsune as a bit "dumb" or gullable, he is only famous because he was a great warrior and military leader but otherwise he doesn't understand human nature and in this case, his very own brother Yoritomo who would screw him over and kill him after his usefulness is over.

I've always had this question about the Taira emblem, since it doesn't really fit the centralized, circular icons that most other clans used it keep drawing my eye. Is it meant to be some kind of moth or butterfly? I don't know where I'm getting that from it's just all I see when I look at it.

Minamoto no [first name] Is roughly translates as [name] from Minamoto house/family By later periods people limited them selves to their actual family, taking Oda Nobunaga as an example But in some official and court events their full name would be used, in case of Nobunaga that would be Taira no Saburo Oda Nobunaga
