Really? To me it always seemed onesided. Zabel always respected and was fascinated by Mare. Mare looks pretty concerned most of the time, and still has her own trauma she's still battling. So if we go deep it seems he is attracted to women who are emotionally unavailable, maybe because he actually is not ready himself after his breakup. While Mare is clearly not ready to date or let go following her loss (won't spoil) and divorce.

Spoilers for anyone who's reading the comments and hasn't finished the show I think it's so sad that Mare practically used Zabel and took advantage of him for the sake of involving herself in the case, like showing up to his house uninvited and then going out on the date. The writers had guts to write Mare in such a way, because it's genuinely depressing she treated him poorly given how they wrote him out - but I suppose it's better to have a flawed protagonist than a seamless one; it increases the believability and imitates real life

When Mare was being super unprofessional Colin never called her by name, he kept on calling 'Sarge', if he had called her by name like he does in the precinct it may affect the respect the town has on her. I liked how patient he was with investigation, how attentive he was when Mare explaining things. He was an amazing partner a detective could ask for.
