You guys this is genuinely one of the coolest things you've made. I can't believe just doing a mold and resin pour retains all those tiny intricate grooves! @EvanAndKatelyn
@EvanAndKatelyn 3 жыл бұрын
thank you! we were surprised at how detailed the mold was
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 3 жыл бұрын
Silicone mould can even sustain enough detail to imprint holograms and optical diffraction patterns into chocolate. I think Applied Science, The Action Lab and Tech Ingredients all did this, and The Thought/Taste Emporium also did but didn't make a video of it. Which in turn makes me think... can you copy a CD that way? The way they're made, the optical pattern is stamped into a polycarbonate disc on the label side during the moulding process, and then the stamped surface is covered with an aluminium mirror, then covered with protective lacquer and a label. I have seen CDs delaminate when left in water for a year, because someone's cellar was flooded, and they had some new CDs there, and the water made its way under the foil seal of the packaging, so when the discs were taken out a year or two later, the label side including aluminium metallisation would just peel off, leaving a clear disc behind. It should be possible to maybe introduce something corrosive but safe for polycarbonate to accelerate this process. Then the polycarbonate disc can be re-metallised with for example silver mirror process, and it should play again. Then the process can be repeated, delaminating another such disc, but instead pulling a silicone mould off the bare plastic disc, with the metallisation layer removed. Then resin can be cast into that mould, and metallised with silver mirror process again. I am hopeful that with some effort, it can be made to work.

Depends how big of a pour you are doing, how well ventilated your space is and what type of resin you are doing. Small pour in well ventilated space you don't necessarily need a respirator. In the olden days (!), the record players had a longer spindle in the middle so you could put on several records at a time. Each one would drop when the needle arm went back to the rest and then it would go back across and play the next record. You could put maybe 5 or 6 on at a time and they would still play well.

I wonder, if you had a long enough spindle arm, if you could create a record player that played some large number of records and never had to stop. Presumably, when you play 5 or 6 with that cool one you're talking about, the records would have to be offset. With enough records offset into a spiral that encompassed all 360 degrees, I think you could keep the spindle arm going around, just swapping out records as it goes.

You didn't really have to test if a thicker album would play. Many modern albums are pressed on much thicker vinyl. Older records were thinner simply to keep them cheap; but now targeted at collectors can be printed in more warp resistant thicker vinyl. Though a substantial thickness might require a rebalance of the arm for best results. *Goes back to continue rest of video* *Gets to part where you are making the mould and pouring it* If there is any dust in the grooves, you are going to make them basically permanent in your resin copy and possibly amplify their impact a bit. Before making a mould of a record, Id recommend using wood glue to clean all the micro dust out of the grooves. You do this with some records that pick up enough dust that it impacts the sound and cannot be cleaned out with a brush. *Goes back to video* Yup. That's why your copy is staticky. Awesome though. Gives me awesome ideas. I now have even more reason to get equipment to work with resin.

As a vinyl collector, so many things about this video hurt me on a deeply personal level, BUT a few things: Records are pressed with heated PVC not polyester resin, so duplicating them in this method will never result in a record that plays as well, but it does work like you discovered. Even when using PVC, picture discs and glow in the dark records sound bad compared to a black vinyl because of the additives. I would suggest pouring a thin layer of clear resin in first and letting it cure and then doing your glow resin as a second layer. This way, when the glow powder settles, it settles beneath the layer of clear resin. Theoretically, your final result should sound less noisy because the stylus won't be tracking across that settled powder and instead on a clean layer of resin. Of course you also molded the record without cleaning it, which means your casting will also contain any noise causing particulates as well because the silicone captures EVERYTHING. Also, simply from a scientific perspective, that crappy record player will make even audiophile level records sound bad. Anyway, fun video! You have the glow forge, it makes me wonder if you could use it to essentially lathe cut a record?

Also, while you could pirate records like this, didn't a lot of record players have a built in tape recorder so you could just,,, use that and put the music on tape. This is the first time I've seen one of your videos (randomly came across it) and it's easily one of the most wholesome, adorable and creative things I've come across on KZbin. Plus, I started a vinyl collection during the pandemic so I was even more enthralled with this whole thing. Although you're doing really well in the subscriber department, it's safe to say you've earned another!

Love your content, as always; you two are a joy to watch! So glad you are doing better, Evan! Suggestion time: 1- Why not just level your table? Then if something is flat on your table, it’s level, too. 2- Take some stress (and bubbles) out of mixing resins. You could mix one part resin in each cup with your pigments, then vacuum chamber for as long as you want. I bet most of your air bubbles come from the pigments. (You could make a cool resin cup caddy with your 3D printer.) After all the bubbles are out, then you could add the resin hardener. You’ll know it’s fully mixed when the color is homogenous.

Usually, not all the time, but usually there are at least one or two mess ups or things that could be done better. And, yes, there is always room for improvement, like you two were saying, but I applaud you for the great success you had in this video. Plus, it does look really cool and epic.

I do resin. Two pointers. 1. Mica and glow powders sink in most resins. You can look for misc resins listed as medium to high viscosity or get light weight powders to mix in next time. Mix very little seperately with its own resin then blend that into your main resin to pour to keep from using too much. 2. Those dots are air bubbles and to remove them their are two methods. Heat works but it can damage molds and blowtorching only goes so far with medium to heavy viscosity resins which is ehat mica needs. So option 2...pressure. By getting a pressure pot and putting your mold inside of it under pressure you compress the air bubbles so small they disappear. Dice makers using squish molds that cant very well leave any sides open with no lettering do this to get clear dice like glass. Its basically a painters pot but instead of attaching the pot to an airgun for paint you cap it, put a pressure gauge on it, a plate to lay molds upon inside it and just pressurize the thing. BONUS: Also to get less air pour slowly so its a thing stream and use a tooth pic to drag the edges or creased areas in the mold. This frees trapped air in grooves to rise out the top. Hope this clears up your static and gives you better pours! Definitely lookup squishmold making too. Itll help.

I forgot about the space cadet helmets! Their dedication to safety always amuses me, it's almost as if they are actually trying to grow old. I've made a couple resin "mood" phone cases and I use the smell of the resin to gauge how far along it is HA! I also weld in my "dining room" and endure a slew of other work related "health hazards" daily.... So seeing people who care is kinda nice.

hmmm, increasing the thickness of it is going to lead to the needle putting more pressure into the record than usual possibly damaging it. I'd say you could adjust the weight of the tone arm but idk if that's possible to do with your record player being one of those suitcase-style ones.
