As someone who dyingly loves flcl, this was such a trip to watch. In april 2018 when I was 13 is when I watched it fir the first time on a Saturday afternoon and ever since that first watch it has been my favorite piece of anime. I've seen a lot of highly obscure stuff too. I've,never been the biggest Eva head in contest to that. I like both the series and the rebuilds but I find I'm nickpicky with the aspects of both I like. This video felt like charity almost for the final film. A breath of fresh air and a beautiful trip. Thank you for that.

this was JUST the video I was looking for FLCL meant a lot to me, and having just recently finished the rebuilds, I think you are spot on! Incidentally, I got into FLCL because of random middle of the night toonami spots. I didn't even know about anime. I enjoyed it, but I didn't realize that pokemon and digimon and many other things had been anime (and that power rangers was sentai). FLCL was just this VERY mysterious show I would sometimes see, who's name I could not remember. I just knew it had the coolest and most thrilling aesthetics I had ever seen, and that it had this crazy deep, almost subliminal quality that tickled your brain. The show blew my mind more and more when I could catch pieces of it (I was eventually SHOCKED it had always only been six episodes long). It basically coincided with several other works of art at that time to open me up to a level of understanding of postmodern media I had never had before, and it became a lens through which I could go on to engage with the work of David Lynch or the beat poets, or Andy Warhol, or so many other things. Eventually it would lead me to the rest of Gainax work and Evangelion. The way I ended up experiencing Evangelion then was as basically the prestige tv drama version of FLCL, which I think maybe it kind of is in a way.
@dorianhinkle55952 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I appreciate your taken on this. That sense of finally growing up and moving on rather than continuing to wallow was kinda what FLCL needed, and those reboots really didn't do much other than just sorta exist as some sound and fury in comparison to the rebuilds.

Thank you for shining a spotlight on FLCL, for I too was a little baby boy that would happen to catch episodes of this anime on adultswim at night after a hard days work of kindergarten and since then it’s held a weird obligatorily unhealthy love in my soul and a reprehensible amount of unfathomable existential trauma to my pudding like child mind. I only saw the final 2 episodes on Toonami when I was around 5-6 then never heard of it again convinced as I got older it was all a baffling fever dream until around 9 years later when I stumbled across it on Adultswim again, I’m not necessarily a huge anime watcher by any means but since then I’d say I still watch all of FLCL season 1 probably around 3 times a year. Even after all this time idk what it is about FLCL but something about it just let’s my brain take a deep breath and roll around in old warm memories that would usually feel blurred and distant. It’s really awesome to see people still acknowledge and care about Fooly Cooly enough to make extensive high quality video essay’s about it so again thank you for putting your hard work into this essay it was really awesome.

I was in middle school when FLCL was first broadcast, and it was mindblowing to me and my friends. I remember a kid describing the ending to me in the locker room after gym class, and just thinking “I need to watch this ASAP”. It’s funny because in Japan, I imagine it was just another show that kind of came and went. But it had a massive effect in the U.S. There are so many successful artists and animators that cite it as an important early fixation that inspired them to make their own stuff.

(also your title is the better click bait) -Anno suing Gainax was just. -Adult Swim was a key actor in the revival of FLCL (the chief of programming was a huge fan and seemingly too little of an artist to understand that attempting to capture lightning in a bottle twice was a bad idea, much to the chagrin of the staff actually working on it) - According to the documentary, the farm part of Thrice especially was handled by Anno himself. I view most GAINAX and TRIGGER works as being in the same multiverse at different points in time: Gurren Lagann is last chronologically, and NGE and FLCL are both first chronologically in their respective timelines. LWA is second in Panty & Stocking's timeline which itself is third. Abenobashi exists concurrently in all timelines except for NGE's and is both before and after FLCL. FRANXX is the direct prequel to Gurren Lagann despite taking place thousands of years earlier and is also the sequel to Kill la Kill which is in turn the direct sequel to FLCL even though Kill la Kill happens before BNA. This is because BNA is in a different timeline that eventually converges with Gurren Lagann's at some point after FRANXX despite BNA occurring before FRANXX chronologically - albeit while still in its own timeline. Luluco can take place after LWA depending on your view of linear time similar to the previous example, but it MUST take place after FLCL because Daicon III and IV precede FLCL. Yet how can this be, when FLCL is first in the Core-GAINAX pentology? Daicon IV, though beginning before FLCL, has still not ended as evidenced by /a/ Draws Daicon IV, >implying that Daicon III and IV take place outside time, just past the border of your waking mind, if you will. Meanwhile Sex & Violence with Machspeed is concurrent with Inferno Cop making it also sometimes concurrent with Luluco which can also take place concurrently with P&S, and though P&S is in a separate timeline than FLCL, it is heavily implied to occur after. The Rebuild series and FLCL 2 and 3 don't exist.

Here from the Hazel video. I have to say, the rebuild series after 2.0 (though it was honestly an exponential curve from 1.0) felt like a pandering shitpost; the culmination of the ire and the disdain of otaku culture, summarized by lobotomizing any sincerity from the franchise. I felt like the 3.0+1.0 Act 1 was the only hint that this was intentional, that fans have killed the soul of the series by only caring for the most superficial side of it, missing the entire point of the genre subversion: it was never about robots, it was always about the fallability of humans. I could still buy the thesis of your video: that the humanity of FLCL was secreted away within Act 1. An echo of the only strain of the series the director still loved. But for me, the rebuild series was a gigantic joke made at the expense at all the Eva fans, who wanted to revive a series that was already finished, for all the wrong reasons. They gave exactly what the fans wanted, and it was monstrous.

I really liked Alternative actually. But really only once I started taking it as its own show and not relating it to the original FL-CL. In a way I felt that was the intention? Like that's not the same Haruko and I don't think she was meant to be. Like when we see the "Canti" in alternative they're not Canti. Also the title being alternative. I will agree that it very much does feel like it's reluctant to be Fl-Cl at points but idk. I like the concept of a different show using some of the same imagery towards a totally different thematic end. It's not a sequel it's just ... And alternate story. Of course that might also be me liking what I saw as some queer subtext in Alternative.
@RED_XLR3 жыл бұрын
I think progressive made good in the batshit crazy stuff (visuals and animation) from OG FLCL and Alternative had more of the slice of life aspects going for it but it had CG robot car lookin ass and neither even attempted to do it better than OG or at least try to be original, it's like they took OG FLCL and cut it in half to birth 2 new clones that are only a sum of its parts. Sadly they were both destined for failure and i think Alt felt rushed to me with the budget running out or something compared to Progressive.

To be honest, I think you overanalized the setting of the first part of 3.0+1.0. A lot of people would say that's mostly a reference to Ghibli's works (especially Omoide poroporo/Only Yesterday) and Future Boy Conan, one of Anno's favorite anime. It also seems like Tsurumaki was less involved in the writing process of the last movie, as he's not credited as a screenwriter (he was for 3.0). Also, the Flcl town and the Rebuild village have different meaning to them: the former is the place Naota has been living all his life, the background for his ordinary and boring youth, whereas the latter is a new place for Shinji, which forces him to see how his former friends grew up and learned to accept the challenges of life.

FLCL Progressive wasn't a great sequel (it's like 66% trash and 33% pretty good). Alternative was amazing but came out after Progressive so people were soured on it and also its a female focused reimagining so chuds showed up to hate.
