I know this video is 2 years old but it just got recommended to me, and I think it makes some excellent points. I also wanted to mention a queer harem anime I adore; Kyo Kara Maoh! which ran form 2004-2006. It's older, and like most anime from that time not always up to date, but also surprisingly progressive. The main character is a man and all his love interests are... also men, but it's not a typical bl either, because a lot of the plot is about teaching the main character how to be king. He does have a fiance, who is a man, who he actually ends up with. There is a lady who dates many men, and no one ever calls her strange for it, she's free to do as she pleases because thats simply who she is (she's also not part of the harem). The show rarely ever seems to take itself seriously but I think thats part of the charm. It's just a show I don't think is talked about enough.

Honestly I remember loving OHSHC anime when I first watch it. It was weird a little quirky and I wanted to punch the rich boys in the face when I first watch it. But like Haruhi the boy grow on me. I was to young back then to understand the queer theme and think the implied twincest back then was weird. Then seeing Haruhi connection with the boy grow it sastifying to me. I wasn't even a huge shipper back then as well. I love it never read the manga though

I mean as far as rep goes for the LGBT you can’t beat Monkey D Luffy being so Asexual that at points it’s practically a superpower. But yeah no the show (especially the dub) had some issues that make it a bit tough. I certainly don’t blame the writers or VA’s for anything there ofc, it’s not on them for what happened. I will say characters like Haruhi remind a lot of other characters like Data from Star Trek next gen. Where the writers somewhat inadvertently ended up representing an entire community of people they didn’t know existed unintentionally.

My first anime was Ouran and loved the show but was super in the closet... So didnt realize how much I loved Haruhi and feel the same, I still go by as male but honestly love androgenous clothing and dont care if people call me he, she, they, whatever. Fell in love with slice of life, romance animes: Lucky Star, Fruits Basket, Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun, etc My start with gay/queer media was honestly the furry fandom. I loved seeing furry art of people that looked like me, a bigger bear guy. Fat ppl in anime usually seen as the butt of jokes or non existent, so furry was the only place i saw that celebrated size differences. Bara is so good, reminds me of Tom Finland art.
