The Ancestral race isn't just "muh Aliens", they are metaphysical and beyond human comprehension and understanding for how the world works. It was introduced as just them introducing a death laser beam in a flying saucer, all we know is what Seele theorized, and it could've been just "muh Aliens" but they play so little if any part in the story, I accept it.

The ancestral race is genius. It makes everyone see the religious imagry and think it's all god doing this to us but in truth we are doing it to ourselves.
@SteubeMan

i like the direction of this idea. There's certain types of philosophies that make God (esp. the Abrahamic God) out to be evil, when actually, no, He's not. He's the only Person interested in raising human beings to their full potential, as the persons He created them to be. How can that be evil? The ancestral race stuff is fascinating. However, I think the ancestral race is more akin to something like "fallen angels" than it is to a previous race of human beings. There is evil in the world, and it is fallen angels that tempt us toward evil. Human beings aren't inherently evil, but we are corrupted, and we end up putting ourselves through much misery because we feel our corruption is inescapable...but acting with this sort of hopelessness only makes us easily beguiled by the demons (i mean fallen angels). And a trick of the fallen angels is to make us believe we're just doing it to ourselves! That is, that we're the sole cause of our own suffering...but we're not! Anyway, it's funny how only Christianity aspires to preserve human personhood, albeit paradoxically, at the cost of our lives...whereas non-Christian religions and philosophies teach you how to preserve and develop your personhood, while in actuality, they destroy it...! Evil aspires to depersonalize people, and it does so by making them believe in fictional versions of themselves...this is where Kierkegaard's Sickness Unto Death comes in, which is the name of one of Eva's episodes...sorry this ended up being so long...

This is why I kinda love the american evangelion fandom and why I think the lack of understanding the japanese otaku culture makes this discussion really really fun. One half put a hell of a lot of thought into the kabbalic/christian symbolism while the other half says he just put it in for show and fluff. The answer is honestly on the middle and it makes swallowing the FAR a lot simpler and makes more sense. Anno and the guys at gainex are huge ultraman fans. Most western anime fans don't know crap about ultraman but those who do know that ultraman and all subsequent ultra shows have heavy christian overtones due to its creator and his family, eiji taubaraya, being devout catholics. Anno wanted to have an overarching theme to the show like other super robot shows like raideen and ideon did so he most likely used christianity as yet another nod to his favorite franchise, where the ultras are treated more like angels then aliens and I doubt he used it in a contemptable way as nothing in the source material shows a distaste towards it. The symbolism is fluff, but it was used to corroborate with the underlining themes of the show, as what symbolism is supposed to do. Essentially they're both right. People either don't know or don't want to believe that the biggest influence to annos work weren't kierkegaard or godard or kubrick but the shows return of ultraman and the British sci fi show UFO. Thats right, your favorite piece of anime art was inspired by japanese power rangers and British puppet shows and theres not a damn thing you can do to change it. Haha!!

lmao bruh while i'm beginning to understand how otaku culture and the hikikomori condition influenced Eva (though that really only becomes abundantly apparent in the rebuilds), you simply can't disregard the influence of Western occult themes, especially as they manifest themselves in Western sci-fi. Eva's just a bit too consistent with this stuff for it to be fluff... Granted, you start out by saying it's somewhere in the middle, but then you end up suggesting fluff. It's quite likely that Anno was hoping to convey something very deep and sinister through the trappings or conventions of pop culture--something like Japan's national identity crisis in the context of international conspiracy and geopolitics (that is, the rise of technocracy), as well as how maybe Japanese people can respond on an individual basis...but this theme of personal identity is universal, and I would say Eva presents it with broader appeal than just Japan... I just finished watching Welcome to the NHK for the first time and realized how much it also has in common with Eva, and it's very much directed at Japanese otaku culture, more directly than Eva. But even it has broad appeal, because the psychological situations depicted in the main character are quite relatable regardless of your culture of origin. That is, we're all human, and the singular goal of evil in its myriad of ways is depersonalize us. Eva attempts to provide a solution, however, I think it ends up falling into its own trap

This is just you digging your heels in on the Christianity symbolism even though it’s been explicitly stated that it’s notthatdeepbruh. If the series was made specifically for a western audience who was familiar with these stories then sure, you’d have a case. But it was made for a population with about a 1% Christianity rate. And the parallels seem to be nothing more than shiny decorations for a different story. What you call a “lazy” or “stupid” explanation really just boils down to you not understanding what the series is and who it was made for.

The trees of knowledge and life are kind where the First Ancesteral Race come in. The tree of knowledge gave human the knowledge of god, to see the dualistic nature of the world around them and the tree of life would have gave them eternal life. So had they eaten both they would have become gods equals. The FAR is just a reference essentially to what humans could become if the had both, which is what they were trying to avoid with the spears.

The way I see it is that the Angels are self-aware, but since they lack the Fruit of Knowledge like Humanity/Lilins they're irrational beings. Humans can think rationally and materially but Angels just go off of some kind of pure emotion or intuition. I think the aliens and Great Ancestral Race nonsense could work as SEELE misunderstanding what they were dealing with. Having mystery and withholding from the audience is fine, but SEELE itself needed to at least think it knew what was going on to justify building giants with armor for people to pilot. I just think it would be funny if the Apocalypse was caused by a bunch of humans who thought themselves wise, but had no idea what they were meddling in.
@Argent7771
@Argent7771 7 жыл бұрын
I will do a supplemental episode like this on instrumentality but my understanding of SEELE's goals was that they were a Gnostic cult who wanted to return everyone to the world soul, however as they were the illuminated masters they would become the driving force of the unified beings personality and perhaps to a certain extent remain separate. The ultimate goal of Gnosticism is to cast aside the physical body, end the cycle of reincarnation and return to the one or the world soul.

So who do they think is the Demiurge? Lilith? Adam? Also, trying to wrap my head around how Kaoru existing doesn't cause the Apocalypse because he's very human and as powerful as he is the only thing that stops him is his conscience. Have the rebuilds pulled the trigger on the peoples settled on other planets, or is this just a wimpy way of kicking the can down the road to avoid going all in on theology?
@00Boogie
@00Boogie 7 жыл бұрын
Mulling it over, an argument could be made SEELE itself is the Demiurge. The EVAs are imitations of the primordial man they witnessed with fear and envy. Whatever unspeakable things they're doing with Lilith might parallel the wicked acts of the Demiurge and his archons with Eve's body. Gendo's shitty relationship with Shinji is similar to the Demiurge's haughty attitude towards man, all the while needing Shinji for that which is impossible for SEELE in their madness/idiocy.

Plausibly. They definitely wanted to be asserting their egos, otherwise they would have sought unity by more conventional means. The point of the technovoodoo would be to impose their wills and be in the driver's seat, rather than a handful of voices within billions (trillions?) of souls. Or they're painfully aware they're such shitty and self absorbed people that the only way they could achieve unity with a higher being would be to cheat.

Love love love your comments about Anno's later supplemental explanations about the Great Ancestral Race and all that jazz. Your idea of a more mysterious, esoteric and religiously derived lore is much more compelling. So much of the original Eva is highly subject to interpretation, which is a fundamental characteristic of any truly great work of art. I think like many great artists, Anno channeled something that he felt but didn't necessarily understand fully at the time. Unlike an artist such as a musician however, Anno is dealing with a narrative-centric art form, and with that comes the temptation to look back and try to make more sense of it to the audience as well as himself. The fact that we can watch the original series and be dazzled by it in its symbolic, mysterious, albeit imperfect glory is proof that the supplemental explanations are not only unnecessary, but as you said cheapen the whole thing. I think it's pretty clear that he sort of came up with everything as he went, and that's a big part of why it's so transcendental and great. This is why I'm hesitant to watch the rebuilds, combined with the not so great things I've read about them. Although the idea of polishing up the series with a better budget and more freedom sounds great in theory, I think the essential spark of inspiration is missing which ultimately made the original so good, despite the limitations that were imposed on it. I'd love to see a video about your take on the rebuilds compared to the originals.

Even in a religious context deities and angels/demons are aliens relative to humans; they're just the C'thul'hu type of aliens in that they're beings so far removed from humanity that to us they blur the line between science and the supernatural, opposed to the X-Files type of aliens that are just as material as humans but have insanely more advanced technology compared to humans. Anno could've just as easily named the FAR the "Pantheon of the Ancients" or whatever and they would still serve the same function in Eva's narrative.

The explanations given from the ppl who worked on it made it even worse (at least for me). Your insight actually manages to connect the many threads, and all that is left to me are 2 questions: 1. was it intentional what they made/or just a result of luck inspired by visual factors (names, religious symbols etc) 2. if it was intentional then why did they try to hide the spiritual/religious meaning behind it

tough call to make.. im not sure if you should change the ending, because it changes the a substantial part of your story, which is a reflection of your ideas (hence yourself). on the other hand might the feedback adress personal blindspots which enrich the experience of your book. im an atheist and to be honest, its not only that i dont mind the christians inspiration, i find it very interesting to hear from a christian perspective. i was born in the former gdr and socialist countries are actively disencouraging religious thougts (there is only one god and its called the state), which resulted in me simply not being able to believe in a god. that doesnt change the fact that there is something to learn from religious perspectives. the evangelion series you just started is a perfect proof of it. this was the 2nd anime i ever watched and i liked it very much, but i wasnt able to make much sense out of it. you provide something i wasnt able to see.

The main reason for the fload was not the "watchers" or the "super beings" (the giants). The main reason was the "wickedness of man" and the "imagination of the thoughts of his heart".

Yhea I don't like Evangelion being about "Aliens" Humanity vs aliens is a trope that has been done to exhaustion, Evangelion was the only media that took the Judeo-Christian tradition and dare to play with it

Is it ever explained where the angels come from? From what I remember they just kind of appeared right? Were they lying dormant somewhere or what? I thought Adam wasn’t able to open his doors of guf yet? Lots of open ends in the original series.

From my understanding. When Adam exploded. The angels were scattered, little baby angels. They all grew (developed) at different times... Some flew off into space and some ended in oceans and lava pits.

So, I'm late to the game, sorry. I understand your take on the death of the author and I agree. The story should be on its own merit and not on the intention of the author/director/actor/etc. In other words, the creator isn't God, the story is God. So, you not accepting the First Ancestral Race is fine because they are never directly mentioned in the show or the movies. We can disagree on how stupid it is, but that's beside the point. What I'm here to say is that the First Ancestral Race is NOT a retcon. They are mentioned in the Evangelion proposal two years before the show aired (wiki.evageeks.org/Neon_Genesis_Evangelion_Proposal), which proves it was something he was thinking about and likely intended for the series, as there is nothing in the series that directly contradicts it. Again, I'm fine with your belief in it being bullshit and stupid and whatnot. But to call it a retcon is, quite honestly, incorrect.

I know this anime makes nearly 0 sense quite often and there's tons of plot holes, but honestly, how tf did humans just take a soul out of a thing and put it into another thing? They didn't even bother explaining. How do you quantify a soul? How did they know they had it? What does it look like?

I don't get it. The First Ancestral Race is basically irrelevant to the story, we don't seem to get any real lore regarding them. Why make such a big deal out of it? This comments purpose isn't to gripe or complain, more curiosity.

I never watch the Rebuild movies yet. But the FAR is mentioned there or is just a fan fic? But to talk about NGE lore, sadly u must spoil it, or unless it becomes confusing. And canonicity isn't base on personal bias, u should know that. Basically doesn't depends on personal liking or not liking, or understanding or not. Is like saying "I hate the Starwars prequels and the new sequels, so they aren't canon". That's so millennial and gen Z thing to do. That isn't how canon works. Saying this, only makes this video subjective, instead of objective. The author/creator is the God of his/her work, meaning they are the ones who decide, what is canon or not, not me, you or any John or Mary out there. Dude for example, I hate the all midichlorian thingy, is lame, but sadly is canon.

I agree. Outright ignoring input from the creator of the series is silly. But I think at least listening to outside views is beneficial because it will either solidify your preexisting belief, or you’ll come to see things you didn’t before, and you can merge those two analysis into your own. Which to me is the point of the show. It’s about finding the middle ground between your perception and everyone else’s. You can’t just listen to one or the other because it’s only part of the equation.

Disregarding Anno's flip flopping of the lore (which I think may be intentional, the video Curse of Evangelion could explain it to be since Anno is disappointed that people ignored the crucial message of Eva: Anti-escapism), the Watcher idea does make a lot of sense. If the nondualistic unity of Humanity in Instrumentality is the goal of the gnostic cult of SEELE, it goes directly with what the Watcher's potential philosophy was, if the Angels of NGE were really Watchers; Human Instrumentality is the weird monadic eschaton of many gnostic and occult/enlightenment ideas, directly opposed to the Orthodox restorational eschatology of God.

I think you've put too much weight on what has 'officially' been said about the FAR explanation. I think Anno was/is just trolling those who can't accept that there is no logical in-universe explanation for the Angels. They are there because the story requires them to be. Nothing more. EVA is not 'about' this lore, it's about the character introspection and progression of Shinji's view on the world and himself. If Anno's public characterizations as a troll and spiteful antagonizer of his audience, especially towards those who don't "get" it, in his opinion, is to be believed all of this (online discussion) is meaningless drivel detracting from the main points of the series. EoE shows this as well, starting out by seemingly given the vocal and demanding part of the audience the ending they thought they deserved, with lots of action and the start of a grand finale, only to dive back into Shinji's psyche.

I think you might of applied your own interests and interpretations of aberhamic religion to this show before you let it at out, I don't see how the originators of life on Earth not being terrestrial in orgins would cheapen it. The non Christian creators wouldn't see much of a difference between the western idea of God and omnipotent entities who exist outside of Earth, in fact God would be an alien in that he didn't develop on Earth, would he not?

@@Pduarte79 You honestly aren’t at all wrong, Eva isn’t the perfect show, though even the fan-service in “Some” occasions can be viewed as a metaphor for man before sin, shinji and rei at that moment representing Adam and Lilith. Eh but who knows. Morally grey? I dunno, Gendo is willing kill and make others suffer for a selfish goal, thats pretty evil. Evangelion also has a plethora of references and inspirations from other shows, mainly Devilman and Ideon, bit this reaches to even outside anime, Space Odyssey could be attributed to perhaps having inspired the eerie atmosphere, the end of a child hood also a tale of biblical armageddon. So in the end, no one can truly understand the insanity that is NGE but that being said no one can call it ab objective bad show, not enjoying is fine but making an invalid critique without any proper evidence is honestly not a great Idea.

@@hi_come_on_in4943 U could consider Rei and Kaworu, ironically, u could consider as least grey characters, since they are basically demigods. Ps: And Pen Pen lol. Besides them, the cast is morally grey, meaning they are typical good guy/girl or bad guy/girl, that applies to the angels, when u dive deeper to myth, lore and what makes them tick. Even if u relate to Shinji, is basically mini Gendo, a typical millennial and Zs with the me!me!me! with a sprinkle of P3 Apathy Syndrome, depression is more related with apathy than sadness. When u are happy, u laugh, when u are sad, u cry. Depression is apathy mixed with the hedgehog dilemma. But that's beauty of NGE, they, the characters aren't cartoony, but realistic the majority of the times. Comparing with anime characters nowadays. And every straight dude likes fanservice 🥰.
