Israel's goal remains the same as it was some 30 years ago: the fulfillment of the Clean Break Memo. Securing their northern flank against any Iranian aligned government or party has taken priority since at least 1997. Israel has seen its position in the region become more unfavorable for a decade now and risks losing their blank check from the US so they're pushing the issue while they have the chance.
