A look at One Hour Photo, a 2002 psychological thriller written and directed by Mark Romanek and starring Robin Williams as Sy Parrish, a photo technician at a fictionalized version of WalMart. Or it's proof that he did. Most parents would never allow their child to watch the show if they knew what it was, let alone buy its toys. I find it much more likely that the kid saw Evangelion at a friend's house, knew he couldn't tell his parents about it because he wouldn't be allowed to visit that friend's house anymore, and when he saw the MP Eva toy, decided to try and trick his parents into buying it for him by lying to them about the show and the MP Eva's role in it. Likewise, he thought that if Sy knew the truth, he would take it away.

I get the feeling that the kid probably mis-pronounced it, and rather than correct him, he simply went with it. Williams was too nice of a guy to correct a kid like that over something so trivial, at the risk of coming off pretentious, condescending, or scalding, so I think he probably just rolled with it. Or he could have found out about the show from the figure, and become a fan afterword. That is also entirely possible.

I always thought mispronouncing Evangelion seemed natural and in-character for Williams, whose character Sy wouldn't know anything about the show at all. And he was following the boy's lead, who would also have no reason to know anything very much about that show either because it definitely isn't for kids, and never aired on TV in the US. He would probably have only seen it in a comic book or heard about it from a young friend and just liked the toy because it seemed cool. And realistically, there's no way he could have seen the End movie to know that the MP Evas were not 'good guys', so he would have just made that up.

Yup, it makes sense for his character. The word "evangelion" is based on the word "evangelical" which is pronounced more with a J sound, so it makes sense someone seeing the name for the first time would assume evangelion is said the same way. Robin in real life probably knew it was supposed to have a hard G sound.

I believe Robin himself detailed in an AMA that he is a fan of NGE (other notable anime as well) and he purposefully mispronounced NGE as a gag. I could be misremembering the details though. I think the figure was also part of his personal collection, but seeing that the director claims he picked it out himself i'm gonna have to look back at the AMA to make sure. good vid though!

Robin Williams' death hit me hard. both showing that there is no cure, no getting better, from mental illness, that even into my 60's or 70's i may still succumb to suicide, but also inspiring me to keep myself going even long into my life, and to try not succumb to such suffering that drive Robin Williams to leave this earth. But it's hard, and it is never going to get easier. Life is hard. :(

I would note that Robin had recently been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, which is a form of dementia which often leads to delerium, psychosis and/or violence. Even without prior depression, it's not unreasonable to chose death over what it will eventually turn you into.

Well, Robin had Lewy Body Dementia. His mind was literally disintegrating. He was experiencing terrible symptoms every single day, so I would figure any normal person would want to end it. From what I've read, his wife said he looked better his last few days and there was a change in medication, so maybe he didn't even want to kill himself but rather he didn't even know what he was doing (you should do some research on LBD), but that's just a possibility.

The accidental choice of the mass produced eva is actually pretty thematically appropriate. Of course people who never saw Eva wouldn't know it, but the symbolism of the 'angelic avenger' and the reality of the creature's murderous role in the show work pretty well with the theme of the film. Pretty cool how that worked out. I hope the director eventually saw what happened in the Eva film and felt the same way.

I'm a bit late here, but I'd like to leave my two cents. It might have even been on accident, but the way the boy thinks the Mass-Produced Eva is a good guy while, in reality, they're some of the most fucked up creations of mankind seems to be a mirror to Sy. The Evas are off-putting and have something off about them from the beginning, but seem to be the "good guys" for the most part. Only towards the end of the story is their true nature revealed. This is when the "evil" Mass-Produced Evas destroy one of the last "good" Evas and push Shinji to bring about Instrumentality. In the movie, Sy seems off-putting and a little off, but generally seems genial and "good." Only towards the end of the story is his true nature revealed, which, combined with the "evil" of the things happening around him, pushes him to start being a creepo. Of course, I haven't seen One Hour Photo, but it seems like a parallel of sorts.

I suspect Mark Romanek is full of shit. As a director, he probably just doesn't want to admit that someone else added some depth to his movie -- or he simply isn't aware, doesn't remember, or doesn't care. I feel certain that Robin Williams knew fully well what he was doing when he included the Evangelion figurine, and I can explain why: it's due to the deliberate use of irony, which hinges upon the masterful choice of the Mass Production Evangelion. The line, "Well, he's a good guy," takes on whole lot of irony -- genuine irony -- that none of our characters are aware of -- indeed, even most of the _audience_ watching the film is not aware of that layer of irony. *Only* people who have watched End of Evangelion are aware of the irony behind the line, "Well, he's a good guy" -- because that is *decidedly* not the case -- the Mass Production Evangelions are not the "good guys" at all. Think about how that irony adds to the ambiguous (and, indeed, perhaps evil) nature of Robin Williams' character Sy in One Hour Photo -- that is, Sy is not merely an "avenging angel" but can be _explicitly_ compared to the role that the Mass Production Evangelions play; just as SEELE does, Sy thinks he's the good guy when -- in reality -- he may not be the good guy at all and actually does some things that are quite horrific. Thus, my argument is that only someone who knows the irony behind the line, "Well, he's a good guy" would have included that line -- since it's clearly not true in End of Evangelion (hence making the line ironic) -- and since, clearly, Mark Romanek doesn't seem to fully understand the presence of the Mass Production Evangelion, I therefore conclude Robin Williams was indeed the one who chose the Mass Production Evangelion for the film and likely knew the true story behind it. The irony in the line, "Well, he's a good guy," is deliberate. (Oh, and Robin Williams mispronounces the name "Evangelion" because his _character_ would not know how to pronounce it.)

Very good analogy there, though I'd go as far as to argue that even in its proper context, the "he's a good guy" line works - the kid's lying, plain and simple. He probably saw Evangelion at a friend's house because his parents would never have approved of him watching it if they knew what it was about, so he also misrepresents the toy itself because he's worried that Sy and/or his parents would refuse to let him have it.

YES, you could tell from the director's responses he wasn't sure how far to take credit but he showed his hand when he said he had no idea of the background behind the figure. It's so beautiful and ironic that it just makes sense a beloved weeb like Robin would push for it's inclusion. Romanek may have officially "approved" its inclusion but I do believe it was from Robin's collection. Why would production go to the effort of paying for a likely expensive limited edition Japanese import figure?

Yes, I agree. The same question may have been asked to Romanek many times about the inclusion since Eva is pretty much a cult within weeb circle but Romanek may just for the reason of his personal ego to acted like someone who's completely ignorant about it. It is highly unlikely a "mass production eva" can be that handy to use as a prop without someone purposely introduce it so Romanek's explanation of being some kind of "accident" is truly full of shit. Think he may be annoyed by everyone asking him about it since a toy has more in-depth meaning than his own writing.

Funny thing I'd never heard or had any interest in Evangelion when I watched this movie, so just assumed that the kid was right about the whole good guy thing and that was the way to pronounce it. Probably just the director's limited knowledge of the series. It bugs us as fans, but if anyone on the production (Williams included) knew enough to split hairs, they probably just didn't feel it was necessary. Besides, the director was really only looking for something that fit visually. I think it works just fine.

Quite possibly. My concern was the belief that had it not been for Robin Williams, the Evangelion figure would not have made it into the film, and per my exchanges with Mark Romanek, that isn't the case. The question is whether it's the same figure throughout the film. The figure in the packaging looks clearly had been opened in order to remove the card of Asuka. The question is whether the figure in the packaging, the figure out of the packaging, and the figure in the original script reads are all the same figure, or if they are two different figures. Ultimately, that's probably an unimportant detail.

People are laughing at him calling the mass-produced eva a "good guy" but it's clearly also intended as foreshadowing. Note that his vehicle is white, like the eva, how the only facial feature the figure has is a grinning mouth saying, "cheese." Mouths are archetypal symbols of death for reasons that are not difficult to explain, but the many ways in which they coincide with the movies themes and motifs makes it stand out.
