I am reminded of Jung’s ideas of maturation & personality development by Evangelion. To me, the Eva’s always seemed like an analogy or metaphor to purpose and the worldly occupation one finds to both serve others and pay their way in the world during the first stage of life. I also like how this is contrasted in the parts of the show that have the characters just living like normal people at the end of the world. It stresses the importance of your talent, skill, and fate in the inner work signified by the Evangelions, as well as the necessity to experience all the facets of life, be it playing the cello, drinking alcohol, or exploring sexuality, this stage being that of accumulating a life and knowledge without “getting stuck in the muck” so to speak, as we often see the characters doing. Likewise, in having skills, talent, and purpose one is subject to pitfalls, such as with fame and fortune in being a great writer, actor, or musician etc. we see the pilots, especially Shinji, let their status and importance go to their heads and suffer the consequences, such as “a man’s work” or losing control over fate with the Eva going berserk. You are not what you do in and for the world, but rather a much greater and all encompassing self, that we get glimpses of in Instrumentality, many of the shapes and mandalas being representative of the self and other psychological entities. I noticed a lack of Rei in this video mostly granted to the fact that there isn’t much Freudian about Rei. She often stands as an ideal, or voice of reason, to Shinji and Asuka’s purely human chaos. From the first episode with her Omni-present “Quantum Rei” appearances, she almost mimicked what I would call the Jungian “Anima” or, subconsciously repressed feminine characteristics in a man, behavior seen within dreams. This would also explain her connection to Shinji’s mother as that is the first manifestation of this other in a boy’s life. The Anima is theorized to be the ambassador for the subconscious and this is further stressed by her central role in instrumentality, as well as the “merging of opposites” with Kaworu/Shinji which Jung stresses immensely in the alchemical process. I see Evangelion as the illustrated encounter with the unconscious, the likes of which Jung experienced in the middle of his life, having documented in Liber Novus, or “The Red Book.” This encounter set the stage for the second psychological half of his life in which he threw off his more traditional psycho-analyst of the times, profession and invested into studying alchemy where he continued his practice in private until the end of his life. Instrumentality also being synonymous with alchemy, the likes of which producing an intangible sort of psychic gold in the awareness and wholeness achieved by our main characters by the end of the series, but alas this has now become too vast a topic for a mere KZbin comment. Much of what I’m referencing is expounded upon greatly in Jung’s “Psychology & Alchemy.” But regardless, let’s continue this ongoing conversation and discovery! Cheers!

- To this, have you considered that Asuka may be the pilot who best encompasses this theoretical, psychological stage? Before I actually watched Evangelion myself, a friend of mine gave me the general plot and then introduced me to how deep it goes by giving me a readers digest version of Asuka. I asked him about the different pilots, and wondered if any of them were naturally gifted at their "occupation" of piloting the Eva's. He said that would definitely be Asuka, as she's the one who is introduced to the story as a prodigy. She's been lauded as the most intelligent, capable and advanced pilot of the 3. The sidenote of her having completed college in Germany prior to the start of the series just highlights how hard Asuka has worked to do everything within her power to advance and strengthen her piloting skill. Her self-esteem is completely reliant not just on piloting, but on being the BEST pilot. She attempted to shape her own fate this way, by giving herself the future she felt would lead to the kind of social validation that contrasts the familial isolation she felt during her early childhood. This naturally coincides with the pitfalls you mentioned, as dedicating your life to your talent will always leave you needing to overachieve for fear of coming in second place. When this eventually happens, she completely crumbles as her drive was based on escaping trauma. this could allude to the consequence of letting importance and status associated with inherent skill and talent be internalized as a source of false confidence.

I can attest to the theory of repression, I have experienced it myself. Memories of a childhood love was locked away for almost a decade. I had basically forgotten she had even existed. And then i remembered little snippets and all the pain came back, safe to say even at 15/16 that broke me badly. There was a time where i was waiting for a train at some point and as i stared off into space, lost in thought i didnt know or was aware of, i randomly started crying. So yeah, repression definitely exists and there are likely still a lot of things i dont remember and likely never will, the pain too much to bear even for an adult mind

Thank you once again for producing these journeys. I'd appreciate the follow up tho the topics you mentioned, it sounded like an intriguing line of thought. In this video, your open minded interpretation of the characters themes really did it for me. I never really liked the close minded viewpoints of Freud and some other well known people for their affixed 'truths' of understanding live. Understanding the goings on of someone else's life, is really complex and maybe even a struggle in individual perspectives. But that doesn't have to mean that we can't contact others and share life. Anyways I'm noticing that I may need more time to think over this area of thought... Thank you again for your passion, greetings and a good day to you all! No matter how hard I tried to force myself, this anime makes me have a mental breakdown. Even thinking about hard enough makes me want to vomit. The fandom also cyberbullied me for the depression I felt during Lockdown and stalked me for four years just because I refused to watch it. I just want to know if it's ok to be unable to enjoy this due to deeply personal reasons, and that I don't need Eva to be happy.

I think I tend to disagree with Freud that we all have a death drive, as I would like to think that if our basic and psychological needs are fulfilled we gain a sense of peace of mind, and when those needs aren't met, despair and helplessness creeps in as we feel we don't have the ability to deal with what we're facing. Other than that I think his theories are incredibly interesting, and I thank you ProfesorViral for introducing me to them. Farewell.
@ProfessorViral
@ProfessorViral Жыл бұрын
The death drive really shows the flaws of his theories and his methodology. His ideas couldn't explain the behavior he witnessed, so rather than revising them to try and understand what may cause someone to endure pain, he created a new, unfalsifiable idea that "proved him right." A real researcher would have dug further in, rather than working around the problem
@justachannel8600
@justachannel8600 10 ай бұрын
@@ProfessorViralI don't really know Freud but this seems rather unfair. Physicists constantly tweak existing theories when they discover things that don't quite fit. This is why people were searching for black holes or dark matter - these things were invented as bandaids. That is just how science works until some supergenius comes along and has a completely new theory.

Hey Professor, I hope this vid is as successful as some of your other gems, as every one of them deserves to be seen by anyone who has the ability to think and introspect. Love your personal side of each topic, that always humanizes the stories you're telling and puts you in the shoes of the main character, which allows us to relate with you and the topic even further. Even if this one here doesn't have a solid personal story at the end, just hearing your ideas for future content and just an overall commentary on the topic is just awesome! I'd avoid entering Freudian discussion as I don't believe I'm well versed in his works, even though I really love the big anime from the late 1990s and early 2000s, which have been heavily inspired by modern philosophy. However, I'd love to hear more about how you've managed to learn so much about these topics! Your skill as a narrator and story teller are obviously serene, but you have some deep psychological understanding of human nature, which is why I wanted to study psychology myself. Was that your major? Is it all self-taught? Would love to learn more, about how you came to be the way you are presenting yourself in the channel, but I'd also understand if you would rather not provide personal details to random people over the internet. Keep up the awesome work and I hope I'll see you sitting at a million 1 or 2 years from now, as this is what tends to happen with video essayists I find in their early careers, so go algorithm! With Freud I think most of his observations on human nature were correct but he jumped the gun on the conclusions. He concluded that majority of human nature is driven toward pleasure and the main one is sexual pleasure. I feel, and this is conjecture, that the search for pleasure especially of the sexual variety is a search to be understood. Both by oneself and others. Sharing both yourself and things you enjoy.

Freud served his patrons, and they were male and when they were bringing their suffering daughters into his office he can assign it to envy and delusion when they were dealing with sexual abuse known as the common Victorian diagnosis for women: hysteria. The problem was he believed incest was a necessity to the structure of their society, it undermined what needed to be corrected and sensualised a mental health crisis into a taboo fantasy.

I think Freuds has ideas definitely had an influence on Evangelion as a franchise but I think his influence is often over stated and some aspects of the series even appear to be rejections or subversions of Freuds ideas like the Oedipus Complex, pretty much the first thing Gendo says to Shinji and the only reason he wanted him around is "Get in the Eva" plus Shinji has a solid reason to dislike his father contrary to Freuds theory. 18:52 I think this one one of the few things Freud sorta gets right but for completely wrong reasons, meaning that women do seek to be dominated by men but this phenomenon is explained by evolutionary phycology and the results of sexual selection.
@frankjaeger2565

36:34 the idea of a collective consciousness most definitely comes from by the Ide from Ideon, a 1980 mecha series directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino (the creator of Mobile Suit Gundam) which is one of the major sources of inspiration for Evangelion. The "Ide" itself is a clear reference to the Freudian Id. Anno had already used the concept of a collective consciousness in his previous series, Nadia the secret of blue water, even though that series was more inspired by Miyazaki's work than Tomino's

If I may, there are a few quotes from Jung's Red Book and Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra. That I think would help in you ongoing works. "There is only one way and that is your way; there is only one salvation and that is your salvation. Why are you looking around for help? Do you believe that help will come from outside? What is to come will be created in you and from you. Hence look into yourself. Do not compare, do not measure. No other way is like yours. All other ways deceive and tempt you. You must fulfil the way that is in you." Carl Jung, The Red Book. "I must descend into the depths, as you do in the evening when you go behind the sea and still bring light to the underworld, you over rich star. Like you I must go under - go down, as is said by man, to whom I want to descend..." "What is great in man is that he is a bridge and not an end; what is lovable in man is that he is an over-going and a down-going." Friedrich Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra. "You Higher Men, the worst thing about you is: none of you has learned to dance as a man ought to dance - to dance beyond yourselves." Friedrich Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra. I see these quotes as being steps, steps we take internally to shape us externally.

34:22 I don't agree that Shinji feels the need to kill, he fights the Angels because he strives for approval, hoping people wouldn't abandon him if he manages to please her. As Ritsuko says at the beginning of episode 3, Shinji ends up doing what other people tell him to do because that's his way to survive; then in episode 12 Shinji says he wants to pilot the Eva so that Gendo would compliment and care for him. This theme is then clearly insisted on in episode 16 and 20

Yeah, he definitely has a STRONG streak of rage in him, but its more acting out and needing acknowledgement than actual bloodlust.

His rage is fueled by his survival instincts; a desire to not disappoint anyone around him and especially his father, which ties into some of sigmund freud's theories. For certain Evangelion conveys this theme. In my opinion, it's the most obvious and revealing thing about his personality. It's like you said, there are plenty of examples in the episodes that quite literally explain this to the viewers, but there of course also the unspoken words that the viewer reads when we get to explore Shinji throughout the show. So yeah, maybe he has rage in him, but that rage doesn't come internally, but rather externally. Shinji has very weak volition.

It drives me a little crazy when you pronounce "conscious" as "conscience" but you clearly know what you're talking about and I have thoroughly enjoyed these videos about Eva.

For some reason, I really struggle with those pronunciations. Most of my edits came from stumbling over them almost every time. Which is odd, I had speech therapy as a child, but for completely unrelated sounds

I just found this channel - wow this is wonderful! Fwiw (and it's not worth much) I'm impressed with your understanding of both the psychology/philosophy and the show. However this just affirms my opinion that while Freud should be given some credit for being practically the first to take an analytical approach to the mind. However his actual ideas are superficial and sexist. I've always been much more interested in Jung's ideas. For being essentially the direct successor to Freud his ideas are such a jump in quality that I think they are at least as relevant as anything that came after. I don't claim to understand (or agree with) all of his claims, but everything from the archetypes to the collective Unconscious all the way to individuation ring true to me. Thus I would love to see your comments on The Collectice Unconscious as it relates to NGE. (It doesn't look like you made the video - did you make it and I'm just not finding it?) I haven't seen the other anime that you reference with that topic so I will not watch that one. But that idea is something I wish to understand better and I've seen it elsewhere in anime (remember they explicitly discuss it in Code Geass?) But I don't see how it relates to NGE. Well regardless thanks a lot! I'm definitely going to checkout more from this channel. Just on glancing your playlists you discuss many of my favorite shows!

This was super interesting, I don't fuck with Freud and his theories but still enjoyed hearing about them. Would really appreciate it if you do end up making the collective unconscious video

I had no idea so many stuff matter in NGE. This show feels like an infinite well to analyze. It would be nice to have more videos on it.

Heavy content. Remarkably eloquent in your wording, sir. It appears I have slept somewhat on Freud.
