Many Christians are trying to make sense of what is happening to our political and social life. Some celebrate the trends, as progressive ideologies gain increasing traction, while others are appalled but afraid of the consequences of dissent. Some believe that libertarianism or classical liberalism are the solutions to the battle of ideas, while others are convinced by a utilitarian, welfarist model, or various forms of conservatism. Meanwhile others believe that faith is a private matter, and that the Church should steer clear of the sociopolitical arena altogether. Amidst this confusion and mission drift across the churches, Together for the Common Good invited Matthew Petrusek to draw on his expertise in Catholic social thought to articulate the common good response to the current cultural malaise.
Professor Matthew Petrusek is the Senior Director and Professor of Catholic Ethics at the Word on Fire Institute in the US. He lectures on philosophical and theological ethics, Christian theology, politics, social issues and the Catholic Intellectual Tradition. He has published several books, including Evangelization and Ideology: How to Understand and Respond to the Political Culture.
This event took place on 1st February 2024, before an invited audience in London, UK and was held in partnership between Together for the Common Good and Word on Fire UK.
