I’ve used them on a higher end DW kit with horrid acoustics and they were the silver bullet. I still have go back and listen to someone else play them as I can’t believe the sound. Used Remo, Pinstripe, G1, but THESE!

I found out a long time ago, Evans heads really make cheap kits sound amazing. Toms and bass drums can be very poorly constructed and still sound great with some Evans heads. I think it's more important to have a better quality snare and cymbals. But Evans heads really really help.

I've found that heads and TUNING make a kit. My most expensive set of shells was a PDP FS series, didn't need the hardware package, so I paid $599 for the 5 piece kit. I got MANY compliments from sound guys in my region about how good they sound. A recording engineer laughed cuz I had $2500 in cymbals wrapped around $600 drums. He wasn't laughing after he heard them. 😀

@abbysettle461 When i went to do the recording, I was running Remo Pinstripes on my toms, and a Powerstroke kick. Now, I use Evans EC2S on my rack toms & 14" floor, and EMAD on my 16" floor & my kick. If I remember correctly, I currently have a Generra on my snare.

Great video! I’ve played these since the late 80’s and love them! I even have the coated ebony on my mahogany snare and it’s perfect. Ignore the haters who will tell you “those heads sound like cardboard boxes!”. To them I say, “learn to tune better”. These are perfect live as the quick attack and quick decay is great with vocals and guitars. Plus…the colors are TIGHT!! Love ya, Rob! You’re the champ!

I kind like the idea of using a hydraulic bass drum head. I'm always loading up my bass drum with towels and pillows. It would definitely be better not to need any muffling.

PS In a situation were volume control is important, you can use these heads with sticks & not have to switch to brushes or multi-rods, even with your favorite sticks volume should be no problem. Thanks Rob for an excellent review & experiment!!

When I was still playing Acoustic drums (1986 -1995 acoustic / 1995 to present Roland's) this was my go to head for the toms I absolute loved them. Not only did they have great volume control but they are seriously durable.

Ive got hydraulics on a cheap SPL kit, the toms top and bottom, snare drum and kick drum front and back. They sound awesome no muffling needed. The heads also sound awesome on my customs as well. Great video Rob🙌🏻.

I put these on a crap old Pearl rhythm traveller a few months back it transformed it . I never cared for it I to class the kit as junk but now I can Chuck it about and not care about it and it sounds half decent. They lack a bit in resonance as is the sound stops real quick after you hit them but that’s not always a bad thing in small spaces ! There great get some 👍

My opinion is the Hydraulics are studio heads as Steve Gadd made them popular in the ‘70’s with the “Up-Close” video. They were that….”thump.” Now here they are…returned from the dead. Is it the 360* technology? I had an older blue sitting around and it didn’t sit as well. I also agree you lose some volume but gain control. Excellent if your not a experienced tuner. Rob, you my #1 recommendation for tips as your very real and open.

Can you give me some insight into how they sound on the acrylic kit? I've been searching for some feedback on how that pairing goes. I've got a black '78 Vistalite that I want to re-head and I'm thinking about jumping into Hydraulics since they're so easy to tune but I'm curious how dead (or live) it'll be on plastic shells. I use hydraulic glass batters and clear g14 resos on my '78 blue vistas, just a fat full low boomy throaty sound - no boinginess at all but slightly less attack for sure than say cs dot or clear pins, emps, or silver dots

I have 13*10 and 16*16 with blue ones, and 2ply on the reso side too, because why not.. They are great, because you don't need mad tuning skills and they sound just as Rob described.. Not for everybody but truly worth trying out..

Rob Brown dynamics make all drums sound pro. I use them on a Pearl Export kit for practice with no muffling with two bands every week. Even if you hate them, you probably won't, they will not fail easily. Also, the vibe in red is eye catching and fun.

Those're my go-to tom heads! Currently have the red Hydraulics on my kit on both batter and reso sides of my toms. And they give lots of punch and low sustain! Those heads sound perfect with the EMAD Heavyweight on my bass drum and Heavyweight Dry on my snare🤘🏻

Great timing, Rob! I just put a clear (Glass) set of these on my Starclassic W/B, just because I was curious. I’d been using Onyx forever, and was really interested in exploring other sounds. You’re right: the first thing I noticed was how quiet they were compared to the Onyxes. Also, really short sustain and zero overtones. You’re also right about the feedback and feel; totally different and reduced bounce. Used EC2 resos on the bottom. The Hydraulics stayed on for a while, but eventually came off. Not my thing for now. To clarify: they are not all the same ply-wise. Glass is 6.5/6.5; red and blue are 7.0/7.0 (maybe 7.5/7.5 - I can’t remember); and the blacks are 7.5/6.5. Worth a try and they just might be perfect for you.

I Like the sound, they certainly give a nice thud.....but personally having tried zero rings on 2 ply heads...it gives me similar results...the other thing is it’s a bit more versatile... so if u do get into a bigger room and need more a little volume & projection....just take the rings off and drums open a little more....

@@johnbmx4christ I'm loving it. Seeing through the drum to the Black bottom head gives your drums a really cool look. The sound created between the two double ply heads is thunderous. No ring, no unwanted overtones, just a deep, full tone and instant decay. Every note stands out. On top of that they tune themselves practically. I couldn't be happier. I have a Tama Star classic performer kit I bought last year. It came with paper thin Evans stock heads. The difference with the new heads is shocking. Sounds like a completely different kit. Give it a try you will love the sound.

I love my evans 360's. I need the kick. Blue on a light blonde woodgrain set of mid-grade pearls. The drums sound better than the player hittin them in my house. Of course, i live alone and use earbuds, so i think im doin much better than my neighbors can detest.

Yamaha Dollar for Dollar have the best Drums and Hardware on the Planet. It doesn't matter what price point, you get top notch quality across the board. I have some Yamaha Cymbal stands so old, I have to make excuses on why I need new ones because they work just as good as the day I bought them. Same with my old Flying Dragon double pedal, and NO the Beaters have never flown off mid jam.

The best wood snare I've ever heard is that Japanese oak that Yamaha makes. When I was young I thought less of Yamaha drums (of course with no experience) because the company makes so many things. But later on I realized that they really might be the best.

Gadd used blue Hydraulics on his Yamaha Recording Customs for a long time and man, what a sound he got out of that kit! You sure made them sound good too! One thing worth pointing out is that Hydraulics are NOT like Remo Pinstripes. Pinstripes do not have oil between the two plies, (even though they look like they do sometimes) so they are not nearly as dead sounding.

Agreed. I used Pinstripes on top and coated diplomats on the bottom of a Yamaha Stage custom. This particular series was Taiwan built with Asian mahogany and poplar. Sounded great but those stupid composite lugs cracked. Kept them for a back up set when I bought my DWs ans sold them.

One thing to remember is that drums sound very different from behind the kit than they do to an audience out in front of a kit. My experience has been that hydraulics just don't sound good from in front (audience). They do sound good behind the kit, though. If you're using microphones, then that's another matter. To each his own, though.

I've been using my ($300 that came with hardware) dirt cheap kit for 7 years in all the bars we play in. The rims aren't round, the snare is a 13" and stinks and the drums have a really cheap plastic wrap on them. BUT, that 18" kick drum is the best sounding kick I have ever heard mic'd... I assume it hits just the right frequencies along with the Beta 52 mic I use. I slapped a nice set of Aquarian heads on it and its sounds amazing when mic'd... I don't know why. Like Big Rob, I have no attachment to that kit, if some idiot spills beer on it (or when we play casinos out in the weather) I don't care what happens to them or if they warp badly.

I believe I have Vintage Zildjian Cymbals because the name is stamped into the Cymbals like they're Engraved into them by Zildjian company. my 18 inch ride is thick No dents and no cracks they're solid Cymbals, It's to bad there isn't a year when these were made , I've went through 3 pairs of drumsticks with in 6 months.

I try to tell people this all the time! Especially my students! Invest your money in good hardware, cymbals, heads, and a snare! You can get a really good kit later. On top of that, a lot of these beginner kits on the market now, sound amazing with good heads on them! I have a DW design Series kit for gigging. Not that much of a low end kit, but, I got it on a clearance sale and only paid $550 for it. The stick heads were garbage! Slapped some Evans UV2’s on them and now they sound freakin amazing!

As a drummer, these heads wouldn't be my first choice for a live setting, as a mixer and mastering engineer (I'm a beginner lol) these would be so easy to mix it would feel like heaven. Plus paiste signatures also just sound great and don't need much mixing to them

So.. once again we see , if you play well, with confident talent , you could play coffee cans and sound pretty good. These drums don’t sound “ fabulous “ but they are .. ok to really nice! not horrible. The first time I tried the evans hydraulics was in the late 70s. I installed them on my ‘73 Slingerland drums that have 30degree bearing edges. I hated them but money being tight I was stuck with them. They made (make) drums sound like cardboard boxes, even more so on drums with wide bearing edges. To make matters worse two of the heads top layers cracks and the oil got everywhere. If you’re a novice at tuning and you have cheap drums they might be a good fit. For me, never again.

Rob has a really good video on Maximum Thumpification. Buddy Rich said you don’t “tune” a drum, you “tension a drum.” Buddy said to bring the top to where it feels good and bring up the lower to the sweet spot. All drums are different.

The Ludwig Superphonic 400 and 402 ( 5 1/2 and 6 1/2) “The most recorded snare drum in the world.” There is the aluminum shell, a favorite of studios and the COB (chrome over brass). The Aluminum can do anything and the COB is very powerful. John Bonham popularized the 6 1/2 L402 and it’s nicknamed the “Bonham or Bonzo.” They are reasonably priced and B-stock can save you more cash.

After 30 years of drumming, I can say that the biggest change in your drum tone/sound are the HEADS and HOW YOU TUNE THEM! The shells are important, but the best shells will still sound like crap if they don't have good heads that are properly tuned.

Just found your channel Rob, so maybe you can help me before I sell my drums. I'm an old fart, 63 years old, bought a set of drums just because I have been playing with sticks on pots and pans type thing my whole life but just said one day, I'm buying real drums, and I did, but there is so much to learn that I just go pissed off and gave up ... and that's been 10 dam years ago. I have been given the luxury of taking one year off from work with pay, so I have all this time on my hands and want to get into playing drums here at home. Here is my simple setup: Older Yamaha Stage Customs, raven black: 12", 13" toms, 16", 18" floor toms, 22" kick drum. 6",8",10" roto toms, 14" standard snare drum, 14" Zilgdin A Custom hi-hats, double kick pedals. Five cymbals on stands, all cheap various B8s with one huge AXX ride, HXX crash, and one 10-inch Zildgin splash. The music store convinced me to buy all EC2, and Level 360 heads because I like rock, like AC/DC type music. The first reason I stopped using the drums was the fact that my kick drums sounds like it's incapable of making that low "thud" that I want. I tried the blanket up against the resonant head, but that just made it dead. One guy said I have too much stuff in my den, absorbing all the low-end. I bought a "Tune Bot" .. too hard to figure out, well, I just didn't put the time into it, it's not too hard. I just bought that 18" floor tom brand new to try to get me interested in playing again, but the dam thing came with a different head that the others, so it sounds totally different when I hit it, plus after hitting the 16" and then going to the 18", it just doesn't "drop-down" low enough to even make it fun...again, drums totally out of tune. Just for fun, I went to the Music Store and bought a complete PA system to use mics to boost my kick drum. I picked up Yorkville nx25s, two of them, an SL200 Yorkville subwoofer, stands for the speakers, a Mackie FX 12 mixer, 5 microphones, and because it had drum effects built in, I picked up a DJ dual turntable, SSB something. I used that thing ONCE, still in the box down there. The reason I'm here now is: I am left-handed, and cannot stand to watch right-hand players on the video so I gave up ... a few days ago, I came across an app that flips youtube video horizontally so now EVERYONE is a left-hand player, I love watching drummers now. So, Rob...where do I start? I do not want to be confused by watching a shitload of "how to video" and get scrwed up with everybody's different approach to learning...I have decided to learn from ONLY YOU. Since you have over 500 videos on here, can you suggest which first 5 I should watch? I know that I will never enjoy learning until the drums are set up properly, and tuned properly before the " a one and a two and a three" starts .. lol I'm not rich, but I have disposable income so if you recommend that the first thing is to ditch those Evans heads until I become better, that's not a problem, I just want to learn how to play these drums before I'm dead. PS: I might be 63, but I'm in shape, not a heavy man, lots of energy, I don't drive a big, fat lazy Honda Goldwing, and I got a Suzuki GSXR 750 in the driveway that I wheelie for a 1000 feet daily...haha I have a huge house, so moving furniture, installing sound absorbing panels, anything to make the drumming sound better, I'll do it. Because of Covid, my 25 year old Son moved in with me and he brought along his fancy electric guitar, amp's and all those pedals, so I want to get back into having our "little jams" in the den again. I lost interest because of not putting the time into learning how to set up the drums up before learning how to play. One other thing that I know will help. I have some extra computers here, so of course I should set up a large monitor screen on the den wall, so that I can follow along with you in real time.

Tyrone...you still out there? Our stories are similar. Rob is without a doubt serious about his craft. I stumble at 62 in the same area of learning. Lessons have been considered to make sure 1. Sticks are held properly 2. Sitting position to kit 3. Kit set-up 4. 80/20 learning I thought it was all garbage at first as I did at 9 when I started and quit lessons. No further ahead at 62 aside form beats...and fills. The magic is combining the 2 and creating drumming. The equipment you have could work for anyone wanting to beat the skins but to learn to master that gorgeous yamaha kit, one has to be willing to put in the time. I ride my motorcycle everyday in Vegas but seem to have a problem sitting at the kit for 1 hour a day...and I'm retired. I just replaced my batter and resonance heads with Remo heads and this kit needs to sing. Rock on. Great luck with your son.

@@edwardkaminsky8142 Ha ha .... I'm ALWAYS here ... I won't even pour a cup of coffee in the morning until the big screen monitor is on and KZbin is up. I have replaced both heads on the kick drum, replaced the foot pedal with an upgraded one that is fast, replaced the beater and also, purchased a resonant head with one with a 5" port, so I can experiment with padding inside. I gave up on trying to get that perfect low end sound because the store manager said to me that I do not own a " high end " drum set, so I'm only going to get what I paid for, and that made sense ... a Yamaha recording custom 22" kick drum costs $3500.00 up here in Canada, but I bet that kick drum has the low end I'm craving. lol I have replaced all my cheap cymbals now with A Custom 16", 18" crash but kept the 22" HHX for a ride. I upgraded my snare drum to a Yamaha 6.5 x 14 steel body and got the drum tech at the Music store to tune it before he gave it to me, the snare drum sound is like night and day compared to that loose, rattling, cheap factory Yamaha snare that came with the original Yamaha stage custom kit. The Music Tech guy at the store where I purchased everything decided to do me a favor, he said to bring in the 22" kick drum and he will tune it for me and SHOW me while tuning it, and now I can honestly say that the sound I'm getting right now out of it is the best that birch drum can produce and it's fine by me. I love doing " rolls", so while in the store, I got little crazy and purchased an 8" and 10" rack toms, with good quality stands that will support the drums properly and they add another spot to support a cymbal. The stands cost more than the 2 toms did. . . $591.00 for drums and stands combined, but hey, now I can roll down from 8, 10, 12, 13, 16, 18" and then finish with a nice thud from the tuned 22" kick. I don't know if I'll incorporate my roto toms in that roll, they might sound silly trying to mix those shallow plastic drums in with the birch shell sound. The kick pedal I purchased, a Pearl P930 Demonator kick pedal not only has infinite adjustability, but once I found the sweet spot for the settings, I am actually much faster and can keep time with my metronome much easier. It feels like my kick pedal went from cast iron to titanium, it's so light and fast. ( I'm a Red Seal Pipe Welder for 35 years, I know my metals)...lol I found a guy who was selling dozens and dozens of drum sticks for next to nothing, he purchased them over the years, trying to find his perfect ones, so they were not chewed up, in great shape, so now I realize that I prefer a heavy stick, Vic Firth American Classic 5B is my stick of choice, and all I had to do was spend 40 dollars on 50 pairs of sticks to find that out ...haha I was given a cheap set of drums because I wanted to have a second set in the basement beside mine whenever I invited a friend over that plays, so I can learn while watching him instead of getting up and down from one kit, over and over...but because of that second set, I now can experiment with tuning without messing with my good set and I have to say, I have now caught on to tuning, but mostly it's that TuneBot that makes it easy to understand...going up 1/4 of an octave on the resonant head makes enough change in the sustain that even my inexperienced ears can hear the change. I can now pick up a strange drum, hit both sides and tell how badly it's out of tune or tuned the way I do not like, baby steps I know, but it's still steps. One more thing...I believe that getting my kick drum to sound properly has brought me back to playing drums again. Before I would just do a roll from top to bottom on the toms and then hit the kick, but now I incorporate the kick as I'm coming down and it sounds so much better. KK LR KK LR KK LR KK RL down to the 18" floor tom sounds so cool to me ....I know that is rudimentary playing, but I never said I could play, just WANT to play .. lol. I took piano lessons as a young man, so I'm trying to learn drums by being able to read drumming score's out of the book. I don't want to be a "taught by ear" drummer, I want to be able to open a book and play a song simply by reading the notes. I have found so many sites that allows me to download they music sheet so I can start slow, learn the exact notes and THEN speed up. These Gigmaker kits are great. Conversely, the Rydeen line (which is the superseded Gigmaker) are terrible. They don't stay in tune. You play a dozen strokes on them, and they go out of tune. I was excited to get a set of Rydeens, but had to get rid of them. Go with the Gigmakers, when able to scoop up a kit

Hydraulic’s sustain is a bit too short for my taste . I need something with just a tiny tad bit more sustain.

Intriguing. If you don't like muffling your heads, this is the one. They're more dead & thuddy than the Remo Red Colortones.
