Rob, you don't need the first 2:30 secs of this video. It's all about you, and it detracts from the 'meat', which is what everyone is here for. Just get on with the music, mate. 😉

Thanks Rob. Actually I had a flashbak when I saw this video. So many years ago when I just had a few years playing drums I met Enrique Pla from Irakere (cuban latin jazz band) who was delivering a drum clinic where I used to take drum lessons. Embarrassing enough, as a student I was asked by my instructor to play in front of him (yes...I was a scared to death). He noticed that I was playing with my arms and he told me to use my wrists instead and said "Otherwise you won´t be able to play when you´re old"...I took his advice seriously...I was 24 back then...now I´m 59 and thanks to this valuable tip I expect to play until I have to leave this world...

How does the port affect tuning? I seem to have a hard time getting front head tuned sufficiently with the port.

I use it quite a bit. Sometimes, I'll do it with just the snare, floor tom and bass

I always play it RLFR...it sounds the same in my ears...is that ok? I love doing this fill and do it well. Hitting K on 3rd note allows you not hit 2 K in a row for a crash.

great video for intermediate players and important stuff for everyone to think about. Regarding point 4, recording yourself...this tip applies to all levels of players. It's very instructive to have a recording of, say, a recent performance with the band. And then be really brutally honest about when you feel like the tempos are off or the groove falters. I'm telling you this is a useful exercise for even seasoned professionals. Try to notice certain points within the song where you have a tendency to speed up or slow down, think about where the dynamics could've been a little different. It's a useful endeavor from a musical level if not a drumming level. I guess what I'm saying is, record and analyze practice, but also record and analyze performances. And be brutally honest, lol.

Hey Rob, I have one of these kits too but I'm really struggling to tune it - particularly getting the snom to work as both a snare and tom Any chance of a tuning video on the custom hip? Thanks! Andy

Man I love your PHX kit. Nice choice of color. I could probably splurge on one but I’m not where you are. I do play on a decent used Mapex Pro M kit at church. The heads were replaced with new Evans heads. That made me a fan of Evans. When I got into drums and an early age, my first set of drumsticks was Pro-Mark. The church kit besides, the shell pack, looks different than when I started out. I’ve added a lot to it. I have an older Mapex M series hit at home. The Apex pedal that was with it was decent, but I replaced it with a better pedal. But I stumbled across this video. If I buy used gear, I’m gonna thoroughly look at it and not just give it a once over. I came across a used DW PDP 14x8 maple birch snare inspected it really good looking for cracks, etc. and saw it had potential. I was in great condition, the asking price was in point, and basically I just had to have the resonant head changed. I had them tune it also, and in a way, that showed me how to tune it when I watched them. I did also get a drum tuner. However, when I had the chance, I splurged and got a 14x6.5 Yamaha brass recording custom snare. Man I love that thing! I also have a Yamaha Stage Custom steel snare. And the Mapex snare for my home kit. Also have a Mapex Black Panther Razor snare. I enjoy all of your videos and have learned a lot and used quite a bit of what I’ve learned. I’m using DW 5000 or Tama 900 but I’m definitely thinking of springing for that Yamaha FP-9C. They put a lot of thought into the designs every adjustment is writhing easy reach. I think they’ve raised the bar in that regard and it remains to be seen if brands like Pearl, DW & Tama incorporate that into updated pedal designs. Keep it up with the content. I’m gonna look at getting some merch to wear closer to the fall.

Rob ... I think what playing is two 32 note triplets (phrased as a shuffle) and the bass drum punctuation. It's definitely five beats not four.

Great video. My Pearl Session Studio Select 20” came with a pad similar to the EQ pad. Velcro strip on the bottom section of the pad and drum. Reach in through the port hole to move the upper section of the pad higher or lower on the head as needed. The velcro on the shell at the bottom keeps it in place.

Snare drum? LM402 with a coated Emperor head, end of story. Cheap snare how about an old 10 lug CB700 and tune it up well with a yes also a coated Emperor head. The "CB" those must of replaced the old CB700 from the 80s. The cheap snares also the lugs break, many are pot metal lol

I haven't done this yet. When I do I'll use the Evans heads you recommend. However, I did use your advice when replacing all of my tom heads. After an hour or so I got them sounding great! All by ear. I even got to hear them being played at a show where the opening band used my drums. I'm also a returning drummer after 30 years of playing bass. I play in a classic Country and Rock band with a few modern favs thrown in. Typically 2-3 hours. Keep up the good work!

Love your videos and efforts in making them. Thank you, Rob. I have a Ludwig Supraphonic (402) 6.5x14 and I LOVE it. I like all three of these you are showing and I've been researching them for a while. Your video may have pushed me to the brass. This is a tough decision but all of these drums sound fantastic.

This was a perfect break-down, Mr Brown, thanks so much;it really helps! Please could you do a similarly formatted video showing a way to understanding polyrhythms. Though I can read music, I battle to "feel" it sometimes. How would you approach "feeling" a polyrhythm? Please could you break this down really simply (if possible😂). Thanks bro, you're the Man!😎
