On April 21, 2018, I set out on a thru-hike of the 2,189 mile Appalachian Trail. This video is a full-length documentary of my thru-hike from start to finish. It's drawn from my 41 other videos about my thru-hike. My reflections on my thru-hike can be found not here on KZbin, but on Instagram at my account @Backpacker_Comics. Follow me there!

I retired at 62 with the expectation of doing this trail. Spent too much money on new gear, pronptly got a lung infection, covid hit, finally survived tne li g I fection and now at 70, I’m working my way back. I can go about 4 hours now without a break. Maybe by next year…

Six thousand years from now, when anthropologists are trying to recreate the appalachian trail, this video is found on a half destroyed youtube server somehow preserved in the ash from yellowstone's eruption. It had been 5500 years since the first alien invasion, 2900 yrs since the eighth intergalactic war, and 1500 yrs since we found intelligent species in a galaxy other than our own, yet this is considered the greatest archeological find in hundreds of years.

Seeing the hiker in the video who was working on eating 4 fully-loaded hot dogs reminded me about one of my backpacking ‘revelations’ which had to do with what some might call ‘hunger’ that I realized then was more properly understood as ‘food insecurity’. I ate regularly on the trail and actually gained 15 pounds of muscle in a month by carrying my load plus I started taking some of the load off others in my group and taking their donations of cheese and hard salami which I snacked on as I walked. For a month I was in the Marble Mountain Wilderness of Northern California - there were no shelters, huts, hostels, waystations, visitor centers, grocery stores, restaurants, motels, etc. I did get really tired of freeze-dried peas and carrots so when I went out on a 3 day solo with no food I was so happy to catch trout from the nearby lake and cook it up in my canteen cup with wood sorrel I had foraged. I also had the opportunity to cross the rimrock ridge of a box canyon and drop down into a series of lakes with no trails going into them where my partner and I caught 36 trout in an hour and a half - we had trout for lunch, trout for dinner, and trout for breakfast and then brought the remainder back to the rest of the group to satisfy their own food insecurity. I’m 76 now and can hardly walk with bad knees and a bad back after years as a wildland firefighter - but I still love trout! My late husband hiked the AT back in the 70's. He kept a very interesting, detailed log that I typed and published for our family and friends. But, as great as his descriptions were, there's nothing like actually seeing the mud, rocks, mountains, lakes and beauty of this amazing trail. I watched this whole thing and it honestly made my day. The perseverance and drive, internal ambition and discipline that one must have to complete such a feat is incredibly admirable. I'm just getting into hiking and it's helped me in so many ways. The positive and genuinely kind folks you meet in passing on the trail helps restore my faith in humanity. Most people are good. I watched your video over a couple of days. I felt like I was with you and your friends. I even felt joyful and giggled a bit as I watched you and your companions complete the trail. I watched some of your videos in 2018. I finally got around to watching the entire thruhike video, and it was outstanding. This spring I hiked from Amicalola Falls State Park to Hot Springs with the late bubble of hopeful thruhikers and other section hikers at 67. It was more difficult than I imagined, but not by much. I intend to do an inside-out thruhike next year, beginning with the easier middle miles, flipping south, skipping the middle and finishing up at Katahdin. I'm going to try sandals this fall, when I complete the trail (in sections) at Atkins, Va. Great production, Evan. God bless you! 👍🙏👊

The last part of the video brings back memories. In 1997, when I was 39 years old, a friend and I did a 1-day climb and descend on Mt. Katahdin by the same route as you. It was a cool spring day, clear skies and over 100 miles of visibility. Just gorgeous on top of that mountain. On the way up, we shared a portion of the climb with a young woman from Michigan who was starting her journey to conquer the Appalachian Trail from Maine southward. I have a tremendous amount of respect for anyone attempting this feat. Kudos to you and your group for completing this journey. And thanks for bringing back some good memories!

I stumbled upon this video today. What a truly wonderful and picturesque film. I have a family member who has hiked the AT a couple of times to bring attention to suicide and I have always wondered what it must be like to walk the entire trail. What a journey!! Haven't read the other comments so I hope I'm not being repetitive, but a shout out to the volunteers who maintain the AT is warranted. I volunteered with the Natural Bridge AT Club a handful of times when we lived in Virginia, but there were folks there who had been doing it for years. And I am here to tell you....that's some hard work....but all done because they love it!

A few friends and I did the AT from VT to VA in 87 when we finished HS and we've only got a few rolls worth of pics but great memories. Didn't encounter near as many people as you did and no cell phones were actually a blessing in my opinion.

Run up to your video. For people who are disabled or don't have the ability to do a hike with lot of obstacles (but like to travel or see the beauty of the world) it's AMAZING to have somebody to take them through the trail/hike this way and show all of the beautiful and amazing views and let us enjoy all of it with and through you! (Glad I can't experience rain and cold through the screen 😂). Thank you so much for sharing. I like to "hike" with you like this and maybe it's helpful when you're having a though time during some hikes to think about all the others you give joy by sharing this! We're all on your "shoulder". Thanks for the recap! Even though I followed you all the way I still liked seeing it all put together. Thanks especially for all the research you did in advance and sharing the history and details of the AT with us. I liked your unique backpacking style and demeanor. I miss all my KZbin through hikers now that they are finished. I think I’m going into trail withdrawal...lol. Please keep us informed on your future adventures even if they are not on the trail. When you watch five to six months of videos you feel like your hiker is family!

Sir, that was so beautiful I hope this does not make me sound like a freak! But I have watched Liz handstands video when you snuck up behind her and told her to turn around! And I’ve watched your video several times when you snuck up behind her and said he turn around and how excited she was it’s absolutely awesome! And it touches my heart very deeply! I don’t know what it is! But U2 seriously have some friendship chemistry! The three of you are awesome and amazing! Thank you so much sir, for posting these videos I am leaving October 3, 2020 and my friend and I are going to Georgia to hike for a couple of days on the Appalachian Trail and we are going to Nails gap! I am Blind my friend is taking me so that I can experience a little bit of the trail! I am so pumped and so excited to do this! You’re an amazing person and an amazing human being and I love every video that I have watched with you and the brat child handstand! I’m not judging I passed no judgment upon anybody anybody and everybody is allowed and able to be themselves! There’s only one true judge and it’s not me! I am a little bit long-winded! Wow Evan, Very nice job on the whole AT experience. I watched you, Hand Stand, and the Crawfords in 2018. It was so inspirational that my best friend and I hit the trail in 2019. I just wanted to say that you are extremely talented, Music, Art, Video grapher etc. So awesome to watch the whole AT experience’s in 1 go. The Crawfords did the same and I enjoyed watching theirs as well. You marrying Luke and Liz at the top of Katahdin was then icing on the cake. Thank you so much for sharing!!

Ok, Just like Crystal I didn't think I'd make it through the whole video, but I couldn't stop watching! I paused a few times for work and my nightly spanish lesson, but really really great video! I am 73 and that 87 year old inspired me except when he said he was a marathoner. I ran a 15k once, when I was in my twenties. Really good job, and through all that stinkin' rain. Wow. I just can't say enough about it. All the best.
