Fun fact: They didn't really lost it randomly, the way the Hapsburgs came into power in Spain was random as fuck though, the male Trastámara inheritors died so the crown of Castile went to the daughter next in line Joana (Joan) her father Fernando II the Catholic (Ferdinand) had married her to Phillip vom Hapsburg. Phillip and Ferdinand hated each other but Joan loved Phillip, so Ferdinand tried to have a son as soon as possible so the crown of Aragon wouldn't have been inherited by Joan and Phillip's descendant, Phillip died in obscure circumstances (he was probably poisoned by Ferdinand) and Joan was put on a convent because "she was mad" according to his father, Ferdinand became the regent of Castile while he was still the king, he tried like crazy to have son but died before he could do it. Both crowns went to his daughter Joan "the mad" but because she was "mad" she abdicated in favor of her son Carlos (Charles) his brother Fernando (Ferdinand) was actually preferred over him by the Spanish nobles but Ferdinand decided to accept his brother as the king, thus Carlos became Carlos I of Spain he was later elected holy Roman emperor and became known as Karl V of Austria or Charles V in English. Now how did the Hapsburgs los Spain? Well they didn't really lost it untill the Spanish succession war, infact the Spanish Hapsburgs were the senior branch, but before abdicating good ol' Charles decided it was a mess to rule all those territories in central europe, the Mediterranean, the new world and the Iberian peninsula so he gave to his son Phillip the territories in Spain and the new world and he gave to his brother Ferdinand the territories in Europe, both branches drifted away through the generations only keeping in contact for horrendous marriages and wars lol

Well it is quite Simple, before this Spain was ruled by a queen know as Joanna "The Mad" She had been married To The heir to the Habsburg Ruler Holy Roman empire,They would have a son Named Charles but after that The heir to The holy Roman empire would die.During her reign Charles in 1516 would serve as co-monarchs and three years after that would inherit The Holy Roman empire.3 years before his death, in 1556 would abdicate as Holy Roman Empire in favor of his brother Ferdinand and in Spain would abdicate in favor of his Son Philip.The Spain Habsburg branch would continue to Rule until in 1701 it died out due to inbreeding which would lead to the War of Spanish Succession.

They didn't actually own Spain. You see, after some highly strategic marriages marrying the Austrian royal family to the Spanish royal family, they created the House of Habsburg. The House of Habsburg wasn't a centralised nation or even a nation-state like we imagine a nation to be today. It is more like a loose confederation, each state of the House of Habsburg was allowed to rule itself(set it's own laws, culture, economy), but for more important affairs the leader state(Austria) could step in like for defense or overall coordination. Also, it's important to point out that monarchs of the Habsburgs frequently became Holy Roman Emperors, and it's actually really confusing... such emperors of both the HRE and the Habsburgs could just mould Europe into whatever they wanted with their power. And I might be wrong about this whole thing. I recommend you read about this topic, but warning, it is highly complicated and can break your brain.

In fact, under Joseph II in the 1780s the Hungarian crown was even transferred to Vienna. And Austrian troops were constantly in Hungary. And the same government that ran Austria ran Hungary. And this was all managed from Vienna. Under one monarch, who lived in Vienna and who was culturally Austrian. Cope harder you Hungarian monkey
