As a Canadian who lives at the top of a mountain. Just put your hazards on and stay ON the road. People can go around you. Especially if it's not a busy road. Better than getting stuck. Also there is a couple self rescue vechicle recovery courses you could take just to make you feel more confident with recovery. But I get how scary it is to see all you possessions tilting at a scary angle in the middle of no where! Glad it worked out.

Nobody likes getting stuck, especially in the middle of nowhere in freezing temperatures. To claim it's all just for clicks is really weird. Also, of course we like to watch a roadtrip that goes smoothly. I actually prefer it.

Dear Eva, as a Canadian (living in Los Angeles) I am inclined to give you this info: when you apply the brake on snow or ice, you lose direction, totally. If you start sliding, DO NOT BRAKE, just steer as you release the accelerator. You can apply the brake a little and if it still slides release the brake and try to turn lightly. Also, sometime, if your car is at a relatively high speed and you start sliding (usualy on icy road), you need to counterintuitively full turn your wheels quickly in the direction it is sliding. This will make your car stay in line with the road while it will do a 360 degrees, avoiding the ditch (I did this extreme technique twice in my life and it worked well). But if you turn your wheel in the opposite direction at higher speed (it is a natural reflex), you will hit the ditch or whatever obstacle is on that side you are trying to avoid. In your case, you were driving slowly so this technique does not apply. You can practice these techniques in an empty parking. Also, at each beginning of a travel or if the condition changes when you travel, you need to test how the car reacts when you break, and at different levels of braking. But sometime, you slide in the ditch no matter what you do. But I suspect you did not pay attention for a second and you went too far on the side of the road, then you braked and lost direction, making the car go in the ditch. And for the return.... bon voyage! You are right, it is the pleasure is mostly in the journey as the success is very short in time... sometime sublime, sometime deceiving... but short...

She needs diff locks. Eva, diff locks aren't the same as your centre diff lock. There's no comparison. Far superior than your present traction control. Speak to a mechanic. Also, to know which gear to select in sand, going up dunes and snow. Makes all the difference. Diff locks are only activated when you're really stuck. They will make Odyssey almost unstoppable. She'll crawl up a light post. Cost: around $3500 back and front, or you could just get the rear one. They will transform her.

There are no reason sliding....or driving into the ditch.....she's driving with studded tires..... I don't know what she's doing while driving.... The conditions were just fine.

I'm glad you made alright. Someone made a point about differential locks .I run equipment and the differential lock is really helpful in a situation like yours .It would pull you out like you were. I really enjoy your videos. You are always on point on your documentary. Safe travels

It seems she just tried to pull to the side of the road not realizing there's actually a ditch (In the Nordics you usually have ditches next to roads) which you can't see in the Winter. So when she drove over the snow covering the ditch, she got stuck.

I will give some advice if you are ever stuck again. Cat liter helps a lot. Just pour it under your tires. It will give you the traction you need to get unstuck.

Or just get a few branches from a nearby tree. Dig in front of and under your tyre, then get the twigs, or a rug or whatever under and in front of the tyre. Just use anything you can find that will give you traction. The snow won’t. I’m from northern Sweden and I’ve gotten stuck many times, but I always managed to get back on the road using this technique. Having an old rug in your trunk to use for this is not a bad idea if you’re driving a lot on rural roads in the winter. And a shovel, of course.

I’m almost 60 years old and I actually made a bigger mistake than you today. I made myself a chicken burrito and cooked the chicken and the tortilla in the microwave for two minutes. My tortilla is now a potato chip. Don’t be so hard on yourself. I’ve lived in Snow country most my life even the best drivers end up in the ditch sometimes.

Last February I was driving on an icy snow covered street in my Jeep Gladiator, accelerated, only to find it turned 90 degrees to the right. Well I had no steering and skidded sideways into a concrete barrier. Being minus 38 C, my vehicle contacted the rear wheel first, and slingshot my front wheel and axle into the barrier, and the extreme cold made my cast iron front differential pumpkin crack. I had to have the front axle rebuilt with a new axle housing, bent the left front knuckle, and bent control arms, and had to wait 3 months to get parts and have the $12,000 repair completed. We all make mistakes, but thankfully yours were not that costly, and you met good samaritan travellers, to help you on your way. Yes, you had two strikes that day, but you were able to hit one out of the park for the win! Congratulations! You need to get recovery boards, and a 90 foot extension synthetic winch rope, to add to your winch, a 7/8ths x30 foot kinetic rope, a 48 inch x 4 inch tree saver webbing strap, and a few soft shackles, which would have helped. Learning to recover your vehicle would be good content for a future video, and give you piece of mind. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Stay on the road, most roads are slightly sloped to each side for water runoff and snow melt, use your warning flashers if you stop, try and find a side road to pull into if you need to get out, safe travels !! 😊

This is what i use when Im stuck in soft sand. The Bushranger X-Jack is an exhaust jack recovery device designed to assist in recovering your vehicle. Most suitable in soft and unstable terrains where a hi-lift or bottle jack may be unsuitable, such as sand, mud, or snow. I enjoy your videos a lot ..

The bigger the Latitude, the bigger the shovel needs to be! Get a bundle of cheap blue 12mm PP rope to extend your winch. Landrover Defender has a very basic drivetrain. Because has open differentials on both axles, it tends to fail when opposite diagonals are spinning or both wheels one side spinning. You then need to help it along with a gentle little bit of left foot braking which prevents the wheel spin (needs practice). That performs the same task as many electronic traction control systems but without the expense!

If you don't have any traction devices you can always cut some small tree branches and put them under the wheels. Cat litter is good, do NOT use salt. Place them so that the branches are pointed in the same direction of the wheels thin end under the wheels. Wood ash works well too but can be messy.

As a lifelong Mainer (USA) and a vet who has driven many types of vehicles, both tracked and wheeled in all types of weather. I can personally attest to the effectiveness of each of these solutions. Fun fact! dog kibble works in a pinch too. Salt, well that’s a big NO. Just makes ice the perfect shape of the wheel.

Hello Eva Our roads are often poorly plowed, especially on smaller roads and parking lots where you happened to get stuck.. But as with everything else in life, you learn from small mistakes..😊👍🏼 People are usually helpful if they see someone in trouble, but maybe they were someone who was already late for work because he didn't stop..!? I have lived on a farm in Michigan for over 50 yrs and we heat with wood . The ashes can be used to gain traction on ice . Also have rubbed bark off trees and put on ice to gain traction . Sand works well too . Get a yankem rope for pulling . Brush can be driven on also . The hard part is doing all this by yourself . Helps with a friend , but not impossible . If you have even one length of chain, you can loop it thru your hubcap and connect the two ends around the tire. Then the chain can catch and pull you out. I know what a blessing it is when kind people stop their day to help you out - I've had two times when it has happened for me and it really makes you appreciate the goodness and kindness of strangers.

I am done with adventures. Yesterday I drove to see a Doctor about the case of Lupus variant I have contracted. Some 60 miles in rain and heavy traffic wore me out so completely I spent today doing just about nothing. Looks like my Spring trip to Virginia is going to be rescheduled. I simply do not have the energy. That is annoying. That I am some 40 years older then Eva might have something to do with it. I really admire your perseverance and willingness to accept that in some situations you need help. Many people can get themselves in real trouble just by being too stubborn to ask for help. I will suggest on a marginal trip like this you can dump the schedule and stop sooner than you planned. Please keep adventuring (safely). You remind me of times and trips gone by. Eva you should use your recovery boards!!! They work great in the snow, maybe consider a winch extension strap, not heavy and can really help! Great Video as always!! Also try different gears in 4low, sometimes 2nd or third helps!

Glad you got out Eva. I credit my cousins for teaching me to "never stop driving," and use techniques described in comments. Also, there are traction mats now that you can carry with you that take no room at all. I used to have a small amount of sand too. You can also, gulp, use floor mats in a pinch. My "Odyssey" was a Swedish machine called Zeke sure footed as a Norwegian Fjord pony! Man she was a wonder. All I needed in worst conditions was one wheel with traction. Rock on Eva! Love your vids!

Why did no one break branches off of the trees and feed them into the tires? It gives the tires something to get traction on. Also, if you've got to go wee. There is almost no one around. Just stop on the road. I love seeing your adventures.

It sounds like it's got a limited slip differential? Because when I engage my locking differential all of the wheels are then locked in front and back, and all move. They are called ARB lockers.

Hey Will, My favorite shovel is a coal or grain shovel. The scoop is enormous, made of metal, and heavy duty. It scoops about twenty times more snow than Eva's shovel.

Do you have 4WD or a diff locker on your vehicle? All your power seems to be going to the higher wheels on the road which don't have any traction. If not then consider modding your vehicle, you can usually add some of that functionality. Or try turning off traction control is another one that helps. Or get a Toyota with A-Trac lol.

Nice video. What a beautiful place! Never put your petrol (gasoline) cap on top of the pump. I see people forget them there all the time. Always keep it in or attached to your vehicle.

If you were in Alaska you could phone for help and helicopters would be on the way to rescue you and your dog, but Norway is not Alaska. I hope you make it out alive. How many more daredevil stunts do you think you will survive before one of them gets you? Can't you find a nice guy in Montana to settle down with? Despite being sparsely populated, you are never really alone in the US no matter what kind of trouble you get yourself into or where it happens.

Fact of life for most people where I live in eastern interior Alaska. If you don't keep the driveway plowed you can be stuck like that in your driveway. The vehicle just keeps heading off into deeper and deeper snow. Sometimes requires digging a trench a hundred feet long to get out.

If someone else has something like happening in Finland, here's some info: Finland has an 112 app that allows you to make emergency calls _and_ it relies your GPS location to the emergency call center so they'll know exactly where you are. They can then tell if it's an emergency worth sending some official help, and if not, refer you to Autoliitto or similar who are a volunteer-based organization that's out there to help people who have non-life-threatening distress with their car out in the road. They can help you with flat tires and other small problems. And if they can't help, they then know how to reach a towing service with reasonable prices. But basically if you are a tourist who does not know the local services, the 112 app is a good starting point. They can then tell you who to call in their stead if the problem goes more into someone else's territory.

Hello Eva. To drive safely in winterland like the north of Norway, Sweden and Finland, you always need to bring along snowchains for at least 3 of your wheels. It's just a "must" because of the rapid changing weather conditions in the winter time. There's also a huge difference in the rubber compound in the tires we use for the nordic winter (softer rubber that don't become stiff when it's getting cold, to maintain a safe grip) and these are NOT the same as you buy in sentral Europe. Many also use dub-tires to drive on slippery ice. Summary; It's very demanding to drive in the snow and ice without any experience. I think you manage very well all´ n all :-) Best of luck to you! Just a smart tip for you, keep 2 wooden gripped shaped slats about 1 meter each, when you're in such a stuck situation in ice, align both wooden slats on back tyres and slowly keep moving forward then keep Align slats according to the tyre which is dug in ice, I done this many times and worked faster.
