I am 83 years old and spent most of my life travelling. Even by the time I was 20 I had lived in three different countries and had probably seen 20 more. As a journalist, I again lived and worked in a number of different countries (nine, in fact) and visited 40 or 50 more. Between the ages of, say, 30 and 70 I never stayed anywhere for longer than a year. I speak five languages (English is not my native language) which is handy when you're on the move all the time. I cannot stay in one place, and if anyone asked me "how are you?" my standard reply for years was "fine, as long as I know I won't be here this time next year!" That's all come to an end now and I live in Australia, more or less by accident. I seem destined to be here until I call it a day, but there are worse places, trust me. Anyway, talking about Poland, the first time I saw it I "hated" it. It seemed grey and sombre and uninviting. But then I came back a couple of times more and, like you, I suddenly saw what I had missed the first time: Poland is unbelievably beautiful. Warsaw may not be the most attractive capital city in the world, but then again Stockholm didn't impress me, either. For the record, I found Poles seemed unversally nuts, but in a good way. I wish you luck as a brand-new landowner and rather think that after all your travels (yes, I've been following you for a while now), I'm sure you will have no regrets. If this has ended up being longwinded, I apologise...

I'm an American and I know that area of Poland really well. My grandparents are from there and I have family there still. The Poles have been a brave and stalwart people who fought to recover from WW II and then only to live under the boot of Communism. They have reinvented themselves yet again, building a strong economy, saving their cultural assets for future generations, developing modern ecological policies, and best of all, saving their family farms while here in the U.S. our farmers are being run out of business by corporate interests. There are large communities of Poles here in the U.S., just not in wilderness areas, which is what you were really looking for. The Carpathians were the absolute best choice for you. Open space. Half Polish myself. I didn't exactly hold a grudge against Poland, but something similar. Never wanted to go back. Been living away for almost exactly 20 years, this year. However, lately, I've been feeling like I wanna go back. I don't know what it is, but just have this weird feeling inside. My grandma, rest her soul, loved Poland immensely. But because my grandfather lived in a different country, she moved to live with him, and unfortunately passed away without coming back to Poland. She always talked about how much she wanted to go back and that I should do it. I feel like I will end up fulfilling her wish. I miss my babcia a lot.

The thing about land is this: if you come to a point that you change your mind, need to leave, whatever, you can sell it and try something else. On the other hand, you can stay. And that is what you seem to have in mind. So, set off and enjoy Carpathia.

Dear Eva. I also travelled a lot in my life... and when I was a young teacher at the UFU (MG), I was close to settle in Brasil. Finally, I came back to France once retired... Seems you gonna make soon the same choice... I wish you to be the happiest in your life, whether it'll be with your dog or your future companion (;-)) in such a beautiful landscape (far from the Ukrainian absurdity I hope...). Keep close to the nature and practicing sport : From your brightful smile it clearly shows it is good for your mental (Acordin to Juvenal : "Mens sana in corpore sano"). Congratulations, you did what many people are never able to achieve: you found HOME! And what a stunningly beautiful home it is. Poland is a gorgeous Country with lots of great people. Sad that history has made them suffer, but it’s a wonderful land, and there’s much to be confident in as being from there. The view there is magnificent. But there are BEARS 🐻 and other wild animals that are both awesome and potentially dangerous, so always consider that. Especially with wild berries growing there, the bears will consider that their food source. So be careful, you and Vilk. As far as a building, they do sell prefabricated homes that are inexpensive, really well-made, and fully equipped for a quick settling in. I’m sure there are many options available. I’m very excited for you, this is truly an amazing homecoming. A new phase just beginning with lots of adventure of a different kind. And I’m here for it. Eva- you are the most amazing person I’ve ever encountered. We are very similar but your travel style is different but better than mine. I’ve been to 68 countries. I’ve lived in 10ish. I first hitched hiked across the USA at age 15, and hitched it three other times to include hoppinga freight train for four days- no food or water. I drove a motorcycle across the USA at age 16. I drove a British Austin Healey cross country at 18. I just returned from Spain backpacking- my 20th trip to Spain. I went to Ukraine recently during the war. I took a photo tour of South Africa in 1986- during apartheid. I’ve lived in the jungles of Colombia. I served in five war zones, the last was Afghanistan, but I had to learn the language first. Life has been good. I live in Boston, New Hampshire, Florida and California. I was recently in Poland- Krakow and Warsaw-of course.- third trip to Poland. So, how can I be more like you? You’re highly educated (Berkeley for me), business minded, pet lover, adventurous. So much in common. I leave next week for Boston- New Hampshire- Quebec City. Let’s chat some time. Your biggest fan. I go to Alaska soon… and Argentina too.

Eva. One would never guess that you're a happy landowner; except for that beaming smile of yours, which just slightly gives it away. 😂 Roy Rogers from America used to say; "buy land, they ain't making no more." And I really thought you were going to settle in the U.S. and that your followers might even get to attend a housewarming gathering at your new homestead in America; but it looks like America's loss, is Poland's gain. And as a Northern California landowner myself, I have an affinity for beautiful land, and the land that you recently purchased in the Carpathian Mountains, is absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous! Wishing you every success in making your land dreams come true; and I'm glad you'll still be traveling from time to time as well. I look forward to watching your posts, and catching up on your goings ons.
