Staying with this Amazigh family was a highlight of my time in Morocco. The Berbers - locally they prefer being referred to as the Amazigh people - are a North African community with their own culture and language: Tamazight. The family I stayed with isn't necessarily representative of the Amazigh community at large, but they are part of a sizeable community of people who live in the Atlas Mountains, far from the busy and vibrant cities of Morocco.
Thank you to:
→ Joao Leitao, a travel photographer who helped me find this lovely family. Check him out on InstagramL / joaoleitaoviagens
→ Joao also runs a beautiful riad-style guesthouse in Ouarzazate, where I stayed for a night: www.darrita.com/
P.S. This video was filmed in January - pre-COVID-19 times!
P.S.2 Yes, everyone consented to being filmed, and yes, I made sure to contribute and reward them accordingly for their time and attention 🙂

Hi everyoneeeee! I'm so happy to see that so many of you can relate to what I said about hospitality at the end of the video. Every time I stay with a family in a new country, I do it in order to meet ordinary people from that country. I've always been fascinated with remote places and traditional village lives, and this is a wonderful insight into another culture. ❤️

I've been to Egypt twice & can concur. Hospitality feels like love. I try so hard to give, give, give of my time, attention, & even food to others in CA based on my experiences over there. Permanently inspired by the bedouin and the Egyptian arabs!

Watched with teary eyes. The whole time I was feeling the way the host family was feeling. Do you know why they sent you to sleep at another place ! ... It was not because you were a lone girl with some men in their home .... It was because they thought you would be more comfortable in the other house, they felt they did not have the appropriate facilities needed to make you more comfortable at their home.

Exactly my experience. I lived with a Berber family for 6 weeks, about 8 yrs ago and I still think about those days and nights. It's a really hard life and they had nothing but the kindness they showed me was indescribable. One of the most memorable, special experiences of my life. We put water on the roof to heat up (by the sun) and slept in those heavy blankets with no electricity. And the stars at night...wow! It made me very grateful for what I have and the best part was being able to help them and others (I lived there for 2 yrs). It's desperately difficult for them now with no tourists or work and Covid. Everything you said here Eva is so true...loved watching this it brought all those memories back.Yours is my favourite KZbin channel, kudos to you for your bravery, adventurous and positive spirit and taking us to all these incredible places...

I hope in a better future for those kids, or maybe their present is already better than ours because they don’t know how is to have everything and being still ungrateful ?! Thank you for this video!

2 years ago I toured through the Atlas mountains and surrounding area with my bicycle for 2 weeks and I ate a vegetable tajine at every opportunity, maybe once every 1 or 2 days. It took a week for me to learn that entire families often share a tajine the size of what I usually ate alone. Despite that, I lost 5 kilos in two weeks there. Morocco is great for vegans, by the way! I can also confirm that the Berber people are extremely kind and hospitable. As a male, I had a very different experience and barely interacted with any women. It was nice and interesting to see what the experience is like from the perspective of a woman. Also, that was top quality content. Thanks!

@@lets_wrapitup Well actually according to the DNA tests that many studies did there is less that 5% arab DNA in Morocco, actually we have more Iberian blood than arabic. Moroccan cuisine is purely berber there is no arab related one, that goes for music too, and the language that Moroccans speak is actually a berber formed arabic meaning that it got so much influenced by berber and the way it is structured is berber so that only Moroccans and the neighbooring countries understand. some people identify as Arabs while they are 100% berber, does that make them Arabs ?

Nimo Tafy 1.it’s offical name is Almamlaka Almaghribya which is Arabic or Almaghreb as refered to by all Moroccans, which is also Arabic 2.the official language is Arabic in practice and in the constitution (btw no matter how much influence it has, it doesn’t matter because the written form is the same, and you can switch over to Modern Standard Arabic) 3. Pray in Arabic 4.All Moroccan (I mean ALL) culture is expressed in the Arabic language 5. The parliament speaks and debates in Arabic 6.The passport, the ID cards, driving licence etc are arabic first 7.The courts are in Arabic 8.the law is in Arabic 9.Public administration and services are in Arabic 10.The police, the officials, the civil servants, the workers, the waiters, the builders, the receptionists, the taxi drivers, and the guy in the street all communicate in Arabic 11.The TV / Radio are in Arabic (with occasional french to please the Franks) 12.Schools teach in Arabic 13.Religion and faith are practiced in Arabic 14.Conversations between Moroccans are in Arabic 15.Morocco considers itself Arabic 16.Morocco has majorly been influenced by Arab cuisine (like; hummus, khobz/flat bread, manakeesh, falafel, kebab, tabouleh, fattoush, shawarma) 17. Many genetic studies show that 99% of Moroccans have partial arab DNA (varying from 10%-90% arab, some claiming to be 100%). It’s the truth, you can’t deny it

Just loved the way you narrated the harsh life that the family faces everyday without sugarcoating the reality of living in a remote village. Sometimes, it the people with the great hearts with the least of means provides the most welcoming stay to a stranger. Your summary describing how they welcome you and you leaving behind a second family are truly an emotional heartfelt sense that have enjoyed every moment of their hospitality. I hope to visit that magical land in the coming years.
