> Sound is a pressure wave. > Explosions create their own pressure wave, with or without surrounding air. = You can hear and feel the impact of explosions in a vacuum. That said, it wouldn't sound remotely like it does in atmosphere. It would sound much fainter, very short and quick, and probably rather high pitched. Most other sounds would still have no way to be heard of course.
@jpkjnn673311 жыл бұрын
Hi friend.. You wouldn't hear anything. Sound is a pressure wave which requires a MEDIUM. It cannot pass through a vacuum AT ALL because, by definition, a vacuum is space entirely devoid of matter. Consequently, you could not hear even a "weak" explosion in space. When something vibrates (moves) the movement creates a force against whatever it's next to, which for us is typically air. This mechanical energy vibrates outwards in a wave pattern, moving relatively freely in fluid mediums like air and water and losing energy quickly in solids. So say a ship explodes in space.. (vacuum.. no medium!) There is NOTHING to be displaced by the ship as it explodes. The energy which is created by the explosion is dissipated in other ways as pieces of the unfortunate vessel explodes outwards. The ONLY "pressure wave" you'd have in this situation would be the debris of the ship flying outward through the vacuum. In this situation, the *only* thing you could hear would be the bits of the ship hitting the hull of *your* ship, which would transfer velocity into mechanical energy which would vibrate (hopefully!) through the hull of your ship, ultimately vibrating the air on the side you're on and reaching your ears where your brain would interpret it as a "Thunk!" In BSG they did a good job designing sounds that would probably be pretty close to what the pilots would have heard when they were shooting their guns and other, less fortunate viper pilots were bouncing off the nose of their viper. But any explosions in space simply would not have created sound. Shrapnel? Yes. Sound? No.
@UnknownSquid11 жыл бұрын
jpkjnn Hi. Nicely written, but you kind of missed my point. A (typical) explosion is primarily a mass of expanding gasses. It needs no medium, since it literally travels to the recipient itself with nothing to get in the way. A solid explosive expands to many thousand times it's original volume into assorted gasses and micro particles. An explosion going off near a ship, even without any debris, will impact the ship with a wall of gasses that will pass its energy on and reverberate through the ship. The wave would pass far far faster than it would in atmosphere, and be much more compressed since there is no atmosphere to resit and disperse it, which would result in a drastically different sound when it hits. Rather than the deep echoing rumble, it would be a sharp and short snap at a higher pitch than you'd expect. Depending on how the sound passes through the ships hull it may change a bit of course. You actually get a somewhat different but comparable effect when detonating explosives under water within closer distances. Normally under water things sound much lower in pitch due to the effect denser mediums have on a sound waves frequency. Explosions however, such as firing a gun under water, within a certain distance, actually sound higher in pitch. ( I can't quite explain satisfactorilly why this effect occurs myself, but I have both heard it myself and read about it's occurrence elsewhere. The key part is that it's an explosive pressure wave, and as far as I understand something to do with liquid expansion/compression limits.) Actually thinking about it you get the same in air. When hit by an explosive wave at near point blank, survivors describe the sound as being near instant and high pitched. Which is because they were hit by a wall of expanding gas, rather than a vibration passed through a (comparably) static medium. So uh, yep. That's my re-explanation, and some related rambling. Hope it satisfies?
@jpkjnn673311 жыл бұрын
UnknownSquid Hi! Thanks for the clarification. Yeah, that's not what I got from your original posting, so I'm glad you responded. It was interesting hearing your thoughts, particularly what you said about explosions under water. I believe you, and find it very curious. Like you said, higher wavelengths attenuate more quickly than lower frequencies in mediums like water. I don't know much about any phenomenon specifically related to medium displacement by explosion, but liquid expansion/compression limits is an interesting explanation. I'll have to consider that. Thanks! As far as the other stuff: Do you really think there would a significant amount of gaseous matter originating from an exploding ship? You'd definitely have to be close, like you said. If you were as far away as I would imagine most ships in space would be from each other, any gaseous matter from an exploding ship would be so diffuse by the time the expanding sphere reached you there wouldn't be enough kinetic energy in the remaining few gas particles to push on the hull enough to produce sound. Without the blast/shock waves most explosions get from the surrounding medium, they just don't seem like they'd be very dangerous except for debris, which would have to be pretty lucky to hit you if you were far away. The gas particles would just spread themselves too thin over distance. Am I missing something here? As far as people who have been very close to explosions, the initial blast wave and subsequent shock waves are still dependent upon the air. I honestly don't know how much gas would escape from an explosive device through exploding alone. Any insights on that? Thanks, J
@UnknownSquid11 жыл бұрын
jpkjnn True. I really can't place an estimate on how close an explosion would have to be to be heard this way. On one hand, the blast will never lose energy/velocity the way it rapidly does in atmosphere. On the other, it is indeed going to diffuse very quickly over the kinds of distances involved in space. The danger from an explosion (excluding debris) would depend on the construction of the ship I suppose. The typical sturdy and armoured sci-fi ship would shrug it off even from up close. The more delicate kinds of craft and stations used in real life would probably be at some risk. Though I was really just talking about the sound. But I'm really just guessing now. I just know that in theory, an explosion should definitely be possible to hear in space. Moving matter. Hitting stuff. Nothing to stop it doing so. Simply can't not have /some/ kind of sound, in that situation. The details of how what distances and magnitudes are required for any certain volume, I just cant say. The distances (and hull thicknesses) involved in this EVE video, I'd very much assume that they wouldn't be heard. Other than the ones hitting your own ship. A Titan is probably noisy inside too. But smaller ships nearby, or shooting down torpedoes headed for them. They might well hear something. And regarding the last part, about the close range effects in air. It still expands in a shell leaving a less extreme pressure inside/behind the blast wave of (most types of) an explosion. So it doesn't need to be a full expanding sphere of gas. Just a brief dense blast wave of gas being pushed out. I actually read a tiny bit more about it just after these comments, and read about how the reason the sound is so short in those cases, is because the pressure holds the eardrum fully or nearly fully compressed rather than letting it vibrate, causing momentary deafness. Unless it just bursts for the poor sod, but more or less same effect. If someone were to stand at the same distance in vacuum (somehow), I'm fairly certain the eardrum would still easily pick it up. Though the part about it becoming fully compressed may or may not happen? Dunno.

About the 'there's no sound in space' thing: In EVE, you perceive everything that happens in space as your character, a capsule pilot, which is completely wired to the ship's electronics through the pod. Input from sensors and camera drones is proccesed by the CPU and translated as something your brain can understand. Since people reacts better to natural input (for example, the roar of a gun nearby), CPU artificially creates sound and fancy visuals so that you react more naturally.
