Good video as always, currently I’m using both Eve and Wemo smart plug W/ Thread zero issues. As soon as I connect the Wemo to Homekit, it automatically updates. The only issues I ever had was with Vocolinc and had to send them back. Been team Eve and Wemo

When I first saw that Eve came out with a Thread-based light switch, I was worried about a strong desire to change away from my Lutron switches. I had finished replacing every light switch to Lutron Caseta switches in the Spring and any change to the entire set of switches is costly and time consuming. Whereas I like the simple design of the Eve switches - and who cannot love Thread - the lack of dimming and overall lack of unique aspects to their switches meant that I did not come down with a serious case of FOMO. I’ve become a huge fan of not simply automating lights going on and off, but ensuring that my middle of the night automations provide a low level light. This dimmed approach let’s me have a touch of light without getting blinded. Having it all automated means that I don’t need to worry about fumbling for the switch when half asleep. My hope is that these switches are the first foray into Eve’s Thread-based switches and a greater array of switches with more features will make their way onto the market.

The first GOOD 3-way thread dimmer switch which is stateless (I.e. Rests in a neutral state) will get ALL my money.

It looks like a great form factor, but I really like the look and versatility of the of the Lutron switches. If Eve had a dimmer, and fan control, I might consider. They do make a solid product and really appreciate the focus on privacy.

Dimmers are also widespread in Germany and are usually found in the living room. So yeah, dunno what's giving Eve a hard time to make dimmers work 🤷‍♂

Really thorough video including other Eve products. I too would have liked to see a dimmer version and a version that working in 4-way and higher configurations. Very few manufacturers have 4-way solutions. One thing for people that are looking for light switches to keep in mind is that Lutron is the only manufacturer that has a dedicated switch for controlling the ceiling fans, fan speed. Also, even though it uses a hub, this hub communicates with the other switches using 434 MHz frequency (remember this old wireless phones before cell phones? They used this frequency). This frequency is not used by much these days, so interference is very minimal and because of its longer wavelength, it penetrates obstacles and goes farther than devices using higher frequency. This is one of the main reasons Lutron Caseta switches are so "rock solid" in reliability. Thread devices are great but here in the US, they use the 2.4 GHz frequency but supposedly are on a different channel. This may or may not adversely affect your WiFi experience. Just something to be aware of.

FYI, Leviton has a dedicated fan controller. HomeKit, WiFi, no hub required (if that’s important to you). I needed a fan controller and had some Leviton smart switches installed when we bought the place. The similar form factor was nice.

A few more comments per my second viewing. First, in terms of what buttons I use in the house, I started with 2 WEMO Stage buttons with Thread. They chewed through batteries every few days and were just generally unreliable, even after Belkin replaced on the the devices. I switched the Flic. I love them and so does my family. That said, I did need to take a few steps to make them usable throughout the house. First, I needed to add a second hub to give me coverage throughout the house including my office which is in a second building on my property. It’s immediately adjacent to my house, but it does add more walls. Second, we’ve added some small cards describing what each push sequence does. This helps the family and guests so it’s a good way to handle knowing what to do. Second, I do like this design. I like a design that marries standard physical controls with a modern look and/or feel. I also love the idea for integrating a dimmer to the design by adding a swipe movement. Finally… as a psychologist, I am a bit worried about the giant goose head in your closet. Do we need to worry about anything here?? 🎃

Hi Brad, I’m not sure if I commented on this before, but I would love to hear your thoughts on RunlessWire switches. They seem to be completely different from the other smart switches, as they use kinetic energy and not batteries and don’t need to be hardwired. It would be great to get your input on those before I redo my whole house. Thanks for the content!

One thing I've found with eve's smart switch w/thread is that they seem not to work on some 3-way circuits in the same house while Meross 3-way switches work fine in the same positions.

@@TheBradLloyd The eve switches that act up on some 3-way circuits work fine as a single pole switch. I bought 4 of Eve's 3-way Thread switches, and tested them all on a short 3-way hallway circuit, and one exhibited the double-press problem, which eve replaced. But when I used them on a 3-way outside light circuit and a 4-way inside light circuit they had problems talking to HomeKit or had indicator light problems. I ended up using Meross switches in both circuits without any problems. My guess is that something in the wiring is causing eve's touch sensing circuitry to act up.

I know you are a big fan of EVE, and generally I am, but got their new outdoor spotlight cam, and it has been horrible. ItsWiFi connectivity is poor, the light doesn't even light 50% of the time with motion, and after 2 weeks, the IR night lighting stopped working, so no more night pictures, or at least good ones. I have a Netatmo on in my back yard, and it is only very marginally better. I. will say I had a Ring outdoor spotlight cam that worked flawlessly, but no Homekit support. Know of any outdoor spotlight cams that actually work? These things are like $250 each so its getting expensive.

I think I’m the only one with this opinion, but I personally don’t care about a dimmer switch AT ALL. I have a handful of Lutron dimmers in my house and I almost never use them as one. I either turn the light on or off. When I want something dim or a certain mood, I pretty much always use other smart bulbs and light strips. The only time I use big overhead lights is when I want the room to be bright. Lutron IS the best for reliability, but I actually prefer my Eve switches a little more overall. They definitely look better and they also feel better. In my experience, the Lutron buttons become mushy feeling. If adding thread to the new Eve switch makes them as fast as the Lutron switches, I would gladly trade them all for the new Eve switch.

Not sure I like the touch design. Trying out Wemo’s dimmer switch and their non-dimmer three-way switch. Had problems with their devices in the past (a firmware update seems to have fixed their plugs), but the switches seem to be working well. Like having dimmer and non-dimmer options.

Hi Brad, another very good and detailed review. Have you ever looked at the brilliant switches and control pads. They really are a great system! I have 2 single control panels. One up stairs and one down. Then I have 13 switches. The switches can dim, slide dim, on off and have motion detection. You can also assign scens with a double tap on any switch you set up that way. I am not sure why there are hardly any other reviews out there. It really not any more expensive the Lutron and the the function of each switch it so flexible. The switches are bluetooth to the control but they are lightening fast and easily go into home kit. And work flawlessly with Siri commands and really are fast!

I have 10 of these brilliant switches in my home plus the control panel and I generally like them. They are a bit slower than Thread since they’re WiFi and I’m a bit frustrated they haven’t yet released their Matter support update (they said 2023 so there’s still time). I wish the scenes were better…I really wanted to use the gesture control with some other smart lights (Nanoleaf) that I have, but the scene control is limited to the Brillint ecosystem and cannot trigger HomeKit scenes. They also don’t share any of their API so creating scenes with third party Smart Home apps or IFTTT are not an option, either. In my experience the motion sensing is just okay. The Eve Motion is far superior and I’ve found very little real use for the motion sensing they offer, but that’s just one person’s experience, so take that with a grain of salt. In addition to some of the pros @bagrubmeister4973 mentioned like 4-way (which I use) and dimming (which I use extensively) are the color options. For some reason very few other companies have any additional color options than white. For my home, we use black outlets and switches everywhere, so Brilliant was always a front-runner. Currently I’d rate them 6.5/10, but I’m very hopeful that their matter integration will solve the majority of the Cons I listed.

@@marksonntag429 I do agree with you Mark on the speed but for the extra second or 2 its not a big deal for me.For me to have dim, on off, double Tapp, and motion built into on switch is fantastic. You can sort of control a scene in HK. I have one set up the when a certain switch is turned on or off it runs a scene. Example in the Am hours I have the motion detect and turns on my bedroom lights, bath lights and bath fan. When apple HK detects my bath fan is turned on it closes my smartwing blinds. When I am done I double tap the same switch it turn off my sonos music, truns off my lights and the fan and when the fan is turned off it opens my smartwing blinds to my predetermined setting. You could use their inexpensive smart plugs to trigger scenes in HK. Like when It detects on this happens and vice versa. I like the controllers too.. I am a sonos house so having the controllers to control my sonos is awesome. Also if someone ring the door bell I can answer it from the controller too with video. I like that I can also control my ecobbe thermostats too from he controller of siri. I would give them a bit better score than you maybe a 7.5 or 8 out of ten. I am hoping they release matter soon too.

@@bagrubmeister4973 ohhh! I never thought of chaining automations between systems like that. That’s a really clever work around. I’m going to need to try that! You’re right about the speed. It’s really not that bad. I have one situation for our walk in closet where I have an Eve motion sensor kick on the light and that extra two seconds is pretty noticeable when you walk into a dark closet. But for every other situation it’s quite minor.

I disagree with your assessment that most houses have neutral wiring. It’s simply not true. I like and have several Eve products and they are pretty reliable in HomeKit. Burt that neutral wire “issue” causes me to consider other brands. Also after my poor experience with Phillips Hue, I will not purchase anymore Hue products and also refuse to purchase any device ever again the requires a hub.
