About 40 years ago, I sat on the back patio at a friends house playing with this thing. We got that hand crank wound up as fast as we could muster and launched. 'Ol Knievel took off across the patio like a streak of lightning, not realizing the ride he was was in for. That bike, at full speed, ran right over the golden retriever's tail that was laying on the patio nearby. The flywheel powered rear wheel just kept spinning, as it wound itself up into the hair on the poor dogs tail. The dog, Rose, took off about as fast as the bike did....yelping in fear and running a hundred miles an hour around the back yard, like it was a racetrack. The dogs fear was probably exacerbated by the fact that the 'ol Knievel was still wound up in her tail hair and following her around the yard as she ran. My friend and and I may have both wet our pants that day. I'll never forget that. RIP Derek...miss you, buddy.

That's bullshit, and I'll tell you why. Kids these days like toys that actually *function*. That's why most of what you see selling these days are robots, bicycles, Nerf guns, airguns, and the like. Kids still go outside, they just don't buy crap. I can almost guarantee you that if more kids knew who Evel Knievel was, they'd be clamoring to buy one of these monsters. I just ordered mine, we'll see what the young kids up the block have to say about it. -Sincerely, someone born in the '90s.

My favourite toy when I was a kid in the UK! That bike took a serious battering but kept on going, even with a few bits missing, even after my Knieval figure got wrecked. That said, I asked my mum a few years ago whatever happened to it, she said I got bored with it and stopped playing with it, so she eventually gave it to a jumble sale at the the local scouts. Oh well.

My favorite parts of the commercial When the grownups are the ones playing, as I would be (0:09), sometimes while the kids are forced to watch. (0:16) "Daaadddd! I wanna play tooooo!" The way Evel's body bounces around the ground, just like in real life! (0:34) The way Evel has the chin strap of his helmet covering his eyes, because he knows what horrors are coming. (0:54)
@Narrowgaugefilms3 ай бұрын
A friend had one: Evel was best at going straight, it was just really hard to aim him for that ramp! -most of the time he'd miss it and just keep on going! -and that's why the Toy Evel never broke any bones: Ideal built him with a strong sense of self-preservation!

I remember mine very clearly....It was a surprisingly tough toy for being almost completely plastic. It didn't take very long to figure out it was way faster without Evel riding on it to slow it down. They also made pullcords/ripcords for them. The cords didn't last very long, but the cord did make it go faster than the crank. Everyone would burn their hand/fingers on the rear wheel using the cord too. But we didn't care. We just kept making bigger/longer ramps as fast as our tiny brains could think of one. I beat the hell outa mine till the front forks suddenly snapped off one day. The crank mechanism was a simple tool - the instant you couldn't accelerate the crank handle any faster - it would just take off. Those people in the video sucked at cranking it. I could really get mine going good if I pointed it sideways instead of cranking it in a forward motion. The crank made for the best wheelies and the cord made for the fastest runs and biggest jumps. Thanks, that just brought back a lot of great memories.

Truth! I also "borrowed" the 3 In 1 oil from my mom's sewing machine to try to get the crank a few rpms faster.

This was one toy that really lived up to the advertising, & pretty durable. The bike finally met it's end being ridden by my friend's sister's Barbie doll, attempting a daring jump from a 2nd floor window- over a patio, and onto a raised lawn. Unfortunately she failed to clear the retaining wall... . The bike was wrecked and Barbie looked like Ernest Borginine after that impact.
