(the comment above isn't to be taken to literal) but, because she's so amazing and normally to create music on that level you must be able to hear and feel it. She manages to only feel it and does an incredible job doing do.

For all the people talking about her grip she plays Trad. A grip most American percussionist have never heard of. Side note The grip is not called "Steven's" It is called Musser since he was the man who created the grip. Stevens himself calls the grip modified Musser Grip(which is it's correct name). Musser grip is actually the least common grip too. (;
@JDD_Music_Press10 жыл бұрын
1. Stevens'... Leigh's last name is Stevens not Steven 2. Evelyn uses a variation on Burton grip. The main anchor is on her pinky finger. It's her personal grip that fits her needs and hands 3. American percussionists study all of the grips and can also clearly tell when someone is using Burton or Traditional Cross grip 4. It is commonly accepted around the world to call it Stevens' grip. Leigh refers to the grip as such because he doesn't want to seem ungrateful. Fact is, the grip used now is completely different from the original Musser... so it was given a more appropriate name by the percussion community 5. Side note: You would know most of this if you picked up "Method of Movement" and read it ......... (;
@kelischmidt600710 жыл бұрын
The grip commonly referred to as "traditional" is the grip Keiko Abe is known for, its hallmark being the inside mallet (mallets 2&3) are on top of the cross. "Burton" grip features the outside mallet (mallets 1 & 4) on top, which is what Glennie uses (which is interesting since I believe much of her formative marimba training was with Keiko Abe). The grip referred to as "Stevens" is distinct from "Musser" grip, I can't remember how exactly but I know he talks about the difference in the intro to "Method of Movement". LH Stevens has gone on record saying he thinks it's silly name the grip after him, but it's too late for that now :P
@JackTdrums10 жыл бұрын
Nope. He prefers his grip to be called "Steven's Technique." I've been to a few of his seminars, and he specifically asks that you never refer to his grip as a "grip," but more as a technique.

Interesting! I guess I was misinformed, thanks for the clarification.
