Yes, I wore dresses with bloomers! I absolutely loved Simplicity 9726, The Sizzle Dress. Last month I saw a girl wearing a similar dress with ruffles and short shorts. It transported me back in time and made my teen heart sing.

My Grandma passed 15 years ago and my Uncle, who cared for her in her last years, told me she wanted me to have her machine. Due to issues within the family, I didn't feel comfortable claiming anything. My Uncle passed a couple of weeks ago, and both of my cousins kept reminding me their Dad still had the machine. After the funeral they wanted me to come to the house. I remembered Grandma having a 1960's 400 or 500 series Singer that she had purchased used. I already have a 15-88 treadle and an older Morse (made by Toyota) along with my cherished Kenmore/Janome. I am determined not to have a hoard of machines for my neice and nephew to have to deal with when I go. The only vintage machine I had any yearning for at all, was a 201-2, and given what they are selling for, I knew I'd never actually own one. Well...apparently Grandma's sister, my Great Aunt Birdie, bought herself a brand spankin' new 201-2 in 1951 and somehow, upon Aunt Birdie's passing, Grandma snagged that machine knowing I'd want it! I'm waiting for the wiring kit to show up for the potted motor, but after a couple of generous doses of Triflow (it was completely seized) it is amazing how smooth and quietly that 71 year old motor still runs. When it comes to sewing, vintage is the best. Recently realized we are down to only one fabric store in our town now, making it a 30 mile one way drive - to a Joanns. Just thrifted a pair of curtains for $8 US, that will make a nice jacket for next spring/summer. It's 85/15 cotton/poly. Everytime I look at the fabric, Julie Andrews and the kids all in matching play clothes springs to mind!😁

I wore skirts that short in college. I learned to sit like a lady out of necessity. Also, I had a physical therapist go into raptures when she discovered I crouch to pick items up instead of bending at the waist. Good manners and good posture as a side effect of fashion?

I have been changing all my clothes to flax linen.. but because I'm a big girl..it's very hard.. so I have found some +size patterns a little Asian ish in style.. and because good flax linen is spendy.. I have been fining buying sheet sets is alot cheeper in volume and I can get several outfits from one king flat sheet....50$ish for one king flat and I have 2 plus dresses/night gowns.. I have been sewing by hand (love the back stitch).. but time consuming..I found a sewing machine and after watching your videos I picked up the right foot to make that edge to keep it from unraveling and I can use that same foot and make a strait stitch along side it.. I'm excited..many thank yous!! Shalom

Oh, Evelyn, you shamed me, and didn't even know that you did it!!! Just kidding. I do costuming for a high school, and for Community Theatre. Not too long ago we did Secret Garden and A Christmas Carol back to back. So many Victorian looking costumes to do! We just could not find vintage tuxedo pants to fit the kids, as the kids are too big (or the pants are too small) so I had tons of alterations to make and a tight deadline. I did it "very badly" as you stated. It was the quickest way to enlarge them, and I knew that the back would never show on stage as the actors would be wearing the tails. I love doing the costumes, but sometimes there isn't time to do true alterations!
@LynHannan2 жыл бұрын
I feel your pain. I did costuming for about 8 years and I never felt like it was "real" sewing. It really felt like a backward step (or 3 or 4) in the art of sewing, but then again, there were also the contacts gained from the work and clients. The company must have thought all I did was complain (especially in the first few months) as they just wanted me to "hack" everything; if it would have held with sticky-tape, they would have insisted I use it. I think it was simply the time factor, but I kept telling them that they would save on the time if it were done properly in the first place, and it would be more serviceable for future use. Instead, I had to patch frayed seams "badly" and still not neaten seams at all. One of them even said that I get more work this way - but that only made me feel worse as I felt I was only fixing my own mistakes; I felt cheapened (morally) by the whole process. I was more than a little relieved when finally someone else started doing some sewing as well (I was asked to "train" them), I moved on about six months later.

OK, Evelyn -- you know I like you and your videos and your school, BUT, I must differ with you on the purple dress pattern near the end of the video. I happened to make that one, or one very similar around 1990. It was flattering for me and my figure. The dropped waist was great because it did not cut my short waisted self in half. :) Mine, I think, was actually a two piece, but the top was made in such a way that the skirt just made it look more like a drop waisted dress. I made other ones later on, as well. OK. I just wanted to mention that. You know, what is ugly to one is beautiful to someone else. :) I really enjoyed the video. And, that mirror! Wow! It is just awesome.

@sharronwolfe77112 жыл бұрын
The light orchid/lavender pattern you showed was quite a popular style for those of us who were well endowed with extra pounds back in the late 80’s early 90’s! Ha! I had several dresses in that style. I have narrow shoulders and a large bust, so the shoulder pads helped my shoulders by keeping me from looking like a round ball on top! Ha! Just visualize very narrow shoulders and a very large bust line: the bust pushes on your arms and unless you have shoulder pads to even it out, that area really does look very rounded! Add the longer top and it helps lengthen the torso helping hide the tummy. I do see the humor with which you viewed the pattern, because if you’ve never encountered someone with a body type like mine it would appear comical! Enjoyed the video! I’ve just scored some more patterns from eBay and hope to begin a vintage project very soon! Oh, I should add I’m down over 70 pounds since I wore that style! Still losing!
@moniqueleigh2 жыл бұрын
That style also works a treat for rounded shoulders and high waists with ample hips. My shoulders are relatively broad so I'd use thin shoulder pads to give shape rather than add bulk, and that dropped waist hid the fact that my smallest point is about an inch below my bust & my hips were where everybody else's waists were. LOL Think: Ed Grimley with his pants hiked up to his armpits. I still wear variations on that style today (generally with fewer or no tiers/ruffles in the skirts). Granted, nowadays, it's more commonly a tunic over a longer skirt & sometimes the waist isn't quite so dropped as that, but still just a variation on the same theme. This particular shape doesn't lend itself well to the body-con or hourglass vintage styles, but it works well for the 20s dropped waist & the 80s/90s revivals with their more "tailored casual" look.
@ladyflimflam2 жыл бұрын
I agree. This isn’t a tragic pattern and the shape works very well for some of us. Notice that the pattern itself is in the plus size range. Putting a plus sized model on it would have shown the pattern to better advantage.

I see the older Micronesian women where I live wear that style of dress to their churches on Sundays, and they look very nice. The color and shininess of the pictured dress aren't doing it any favors. The Micronesian women use lovely prints, or embroidery.

I have never seen a hat pin holder before. What few hat pins I have seen were kept in the hats they were bought for. Examples of that last pattern you showed (that you kept for a special ugly pattern collection) can be seen on two of the ladies (in some of the shows) of the old TV series called "The Golden Girls" (I am sure). I think that was styled for old ladies like me; but, I would never wear a dress like that. I still love the two piece dresses of the 1960's (they have more freedom to move them). Just last Saturday, I was gifted with a large green plastic storage box filled with late 1960/early 1970 sewing patterns (some of which I have been hunting for). The envelopes for all of the patterns are missing. However, none of the patterns have ever been cut; and, they are still factory folded with their instruction sheets. Most of these patterns are in my size.

That mirror is amazing. I'd love to have one like that. Actually I'd just love to have almost any full length mirror. I don't currently have one. That pants pattern you were thinking of making for your mister won't work for him because they're women's pants. Look at the sizing. They've got a back zip and tended to be tight across the thighs and not allow for men's parts to be comfortable. I had that pattern and made the long pants for the first day of school in 1969. I live in New York State in the US and that summer the State Education Department changed the dress code to allow women and girls to wear pants to school (before then the only pants allowed were for gym clothes or long pants as leggings under our skirts on particularly cold winter days and then had to be taken off and kept in our locker until we went home) and I was the only one on the first day of classes who did.

My grandmother had a haberdashery shop in the late 60s in the UK. When she closed the shop she kept the unsold remains for personal use. She brought it all with her when we moved to Australia in the 70s and now it’s in my sewing room waiting to be used. There are cards of buttons, metal zippers, press studs, hooks and eyes etc in their packaging and some old wooden reels of cotton thread. The thread is too weak to sew with but I like the look of them. I also inherited her fabric stash, knitting needles and patterns but unfortunately I don’t knit.

So, I'm not kicking myself too hard. You've also reminded me that I need to check the sewing stuff in thrift stores better than I do for things like zips and buttons. As I'm a larger woman I rarely look at the patterns. Unless I learn how to enlarge them, there's no point to my getting and hoarding the patterns, which makes me sad as there's so many very lovely things I'd make for myself if I could just fit in the patterns.

Think tights that go all the way up. It had a turtleneck collar and long sleeves. Over the top of that I wore my dark purple velour hot pants (micro shorts) with a wide white macrame belt. To finish the look, I had a bright Yellow silk cord macrame panel on a cord as a necklace. Both macrame made by me. I would have been about 12. From kindergarten to about 3rd grade, I wore all the short short dresses! It was the style! Underneath the dresses, I wore the "beautiful" polyester stretch shorts, with the sewn in front kinda pintuck creases. I remember telling my mom I needed the shorts (they were similar to today's bike shorts) because boys would lift up our hems... which wasn't such a big deal then, we didn't recognize harassment, lol. By 4th grade, the Gunne Sax Prarie dresses were in style. I spent about a year looking all Little House on the Prarie, which I hated. By 5th grade, I had learned to debate, and pick out my own clothes. It's been Levi's and classic tee shirts, button down shirts, and vee neck sweaters since then. Except in the 80's, when I figured out that short skirts got me free drinks at the clubs, ha!!

I've recently started making vera Bradley style bags (sort of) out of thrifted, king size, quilted pillow cases. Here in the US i can pick these up at goodwill for 2 dollars a piece. For 4 dollars i get all the material i need... and it's already quilted!

Have you ever framed the envelope to your 1st pattern or the one you think is funny? It can be tastefully done & if the tissue is in bad shape you can cut it and use it as the mat, then place the envelope(s) layered on top. Voila something to hang in your sewing room. I’ve even seen a couple lamp shades decoupaged using the tissue pattern.

McCalls had a bunch of those funny/terrible patterns this year. I was like OMG who is designing their stuff now. I had a hot fuscia color short skirt like that back in the day-lol

in the early 70.s I made a blouse and skirt and I decided I needed shorts under the skirt cause it was so short. I got so many compliments on the outfit.

Yay, thrift haul! I recently got a bunch of buttons and ribbons, and a few meters of soft pink tule from the thrift store! Such gems to find, if you know where to look!

The lavender set pattern was my year 12 graduation dress. Black taffeta dress with black lace over tunic. My mum didn’t sew much but she went to such effort for me for it. Very standard style for 1989 but apparently a bit “different” in that it was in black. 🤪😅🤪😅

So excited for your Bernina video. My only sewing machine is a Bernina Sport 802 from the early 1980s. It's a tank.

I made the last one in a satin print for a friend as a early maternity dress. There wasn't much in way of choices at that time. It looked great on her and she wore it until she was to big for it. Then once again after the baby was born.

I do love seeing your thrift store hauls. The first place I go to in Goodwill is the sewing/crafting area. I have gotten wonderful vintage(40’s) fabrics and too many to count vintage patterns. It is like going down memory lane. Looking at patterns from the 70’s makes me recall outfits I made in middle/high school. I was on a badminton team in HS 77-78? We had to wear these ridiculous outfits similar to your pattern with the bloomers. They were white sleeveless dresses, I think polyester, that were so short you had to wear this bloomer/panty things underneath. I loved being on the team, but loathed the uniform. Especially since I stopped wearing short shorts when I was 12 yrs old.

I know you are thrilled with your hat pin stand but I think you'll find it's actually an earring holder! I have a couple of them on my dressing table, they're perfect for dangly earrings and studs can go in the lower dish. Lx

The Super short skirts with the shorts were called scooter skirts when I was learning to sew. It was the pattern my sewing teacher had us make the summer I got my first sewing machine. I was so proud wearing that skirt.

I love your attitude towards sustainability. I have a skip business in Qld and I try to salvage as much fabric as I can. Anything we can't repurpose goes either to an op-shop or to H&M. H&M will take any fabrics, including scraps, you even get a voucher for dropping it off!

The ugly purple shoulder pad pattern, as soon as you held it up I immediately thought of the actress Rowena Wallace! I don’t recall the show but I do recall the look! Square shoulder pad pant or skirt suits with a sharp short haircut gelled within an inch of its life!!!

Brilliant haul, the sewing machine is a must for future video. Some great material and lovely ric-rac. Most of all I am looking forward to the making of the 'See and Sew' (Ugly) pattern, it would be brilliant to sew how that was meant to come together. Then you could have it in the background to remind us all that not everything is worth making, lol.

That is the 2nd machine my mom had, still has! And sewed with it as a teenager (I started on a very old singer which I have)! My 1st and only machine is a Bernina and she is 39 yrs old now!

I just bought a whole lot of Vintage sewing notions from Ebay, I actually got it b/c it had a lot of bias binding in colors I use b/c I hate making it from scratch. It's my least favorite thing to make while sewing. It had a whole bunch of useful things still in their original packaging and has never been opened and still have the original price tag on it. Some are duplicates that I am giving to a sewing friend in need. However I will use it all of it eventually and have added to my collection. It was about 200 pieces for a really great price and even stuff that wasn't pictured in it. I only paid 20.00 USD. I love getting Vintage sewing notions.
