Radio Rebel movie commentary reaction
Radio Rebel is a movie we really tried to give a chance for this commentary and reaction, but it's honestly a bit of a mess, even for a DCOM. The script, acting and dialogue are all the usual level of cringe, but the real issue is with the basic premise and the execution of it.

The irony of this movie supposedly being a message to be yourself and its ok to be different, yet making a point of Gavin telling the band leader he needs to stop wanting to have fun and be famous and to just 'be normal'. Especially as it never comes across as if the guy is putting up a huge act, just that Gavin doesn't want to be like that, so somehow that means its wrong because they have different goals. Yet Gabe seems like the most honest and true to himself character. Makes the message seem more about be yourself, but only if that self is somehow empowering or helpful to others.

Fun fact: Policies can be forced to change if enough Parents complain and Students ignore both happened in my school. Ex 1: The school wanted parents to pay for lunch even if the kid brought their own lunch. Parents refused to pay and immediately started grilling the school about it's past history (It had a massive problem with mold being in the milk and water). School apologized. Ex. 2: "Due to budget issues, Prom is cancelled unless you sell these MLM cakes for us. Students either had a massive fit or sold the cakes but kept the money for themselves. When the school told the parents of their child's 'disobedience' the parents usually would say: "Oh, I'm sorry my child was trying to get the money they wasted on buying Prom dresses/Tuxedos. I would totally give you the money your deserved but my child said he doesn't have the money so nothing I can do." Ex 3: My teacher told us not to talk about politics or religions in her class (A.K.A Keep your Liberal/LGBT out of my class)...75% of her class was LGBT...We immediately ignored her and purposely talked about other stuff that made her uncomfortable for the rest of the school year (Race issues, Who we had a crush on, etc.) Basically, Schools can only enforce stuff if everyone agrees to go with it.
@jamj4r
@jamj4r Жыл бұрын
I live for example 3 bc at my preforming arts high school, we were all either LGBT or allies except for literally 4 people who were loudly phobic and we just "bullied" them until they left the school (by bully I mean call them out and tell them to shut up). I wasn't out at the time as anything other than bicurious at the time (trans pan and pollyam now) but the leader girl of this group was just trash talking the one openly Trans guy and I told her she was disgusting and no one likes her. When she shouted that people did like her, half the class straight up said they didn't like her or her friends and everyone else murmured in agreement. I was called into the counselors office bc she reported me for being mean and the counselor openly said she didn't like gay people either and asked if I thought she was a bad person and I said yes. I told everyone I could to not go see her and tell the faculty why if asked. She also left the school after a while bc why keep a counselor if the students dont trust them? Also 2 girls(separate from the 4) falsely reported our choir teacher for being a creep even though the story they told was on a day and a time that I was waiting in the room for them to leave so I could talk to him and I was able to help clear that up. Literally all he did was tell both of them that he believes they could do better and put forth an effort. And they just didn't want to, so their solution was to ruin this guy's life. The door was open and this happened a minute after the bell rang for people to get to their next class as well. They were expelled, as they should be. So long story short, I was (partially) responsible for 7 awful and rotten individuals leaving the only place I had a good schooling experience at bc I was over being treated subhuman.

That principal reminded me of a teacher I had in high school. We had a ton of rules about everything, especially our dress code and uniform. The lady would confiscate stuff all of the time. One time she made me take out a pair of earrings because it was shaped like a flower and confiscated them. Two weeks later a friend of mine mentioned that that teacher was wearing earrings just like mine (I hadn't mentioned it being confiscated). The lady was legit wearing my jewelry. I also had a book confiscated by another teacher since I was writing a novel instead of notes in class. She got mad at me for writing in class, snitched to my mom which got me in a bunch of trouble (rightfully so in retrospect), then returned my notebook a week later complimenting my writing and asking if she could read the rest whenever I write more. I was like...mf what? I got my butt whooped and you want updates? Anyways high school teachers being sketchy about confiscated stuff is pretty on brand in my experience. If I'd ever gotten an mp3 confiscated back in the day, I'd never get that back. They'd say it was "lost".

Awesome reaction! I like both of your commentaries on how unfair the American school systems treat their students! It really shows that it's not really a common thing as America likes to make kids think.The principal is a bit of an extreme, but it sadly doesn't surprise me the principal was like that, because there are a lot of teachers that do behave that way. Also, on the note of property to the students, phones and stuff being taken up and it being gone, is a thing. Granted, in some areas you can still get stuff back. I don't know about other places, but where I'm at, it comes with a price. You have to pay 15 dollars for your phone back at all and they include this clause in the syllabus things they give you at the beginning of the year. So, it looks like a written contract you signed to agree for that to happen, along with the rest of things that happen in the class room. There reasoning for when the students remind them that they or their parents pay the phone bills, "It's my classroom and I have rules!" I literally had a teacher say that to the class.

"I'M RADIO REBEL!!!!" ....I am not sorry, I kinda had too, once you mentioned it. Also, thank you. You do not know the number of times I have had the exact same argument of how stupid the main plot of this movie was. The principle canceling the prom because a student has a Chanel on a radio station. 1.) The prom is usually for both the seniors and junior classes. Even of the held separate proms for the different grades (which some schools do) the seniors would have just went to the junior prom. Even if she made it (or tried to make it) only students from the junior year could attend, what people's dates? Seniors with juniors, juniors with sophomores or even a few freshman going with juniors, that all happens. Both the parents and students would have been up in arms about that. Especially with how expensive prom is, I people who brought their dress early in the first semester long before prom is even talked about. Just so they can have their dress picked out before the rush. 2.) Its brought up in the movie that she a good amount of people (mostly teens( listening to her that are from all over Seattle. Especially from other schools around her area. Why did they just go to one of the other schools proms. Plenty of people do it, sometimes because their dates or their friends got to a different school so the ment up and go to prom together.

Hey guys, just to say in Washington state principals can have things take until the end of the year if there’s no parent intervention, they can cancel events like prom but don’t typically so close to the thing like how the movie is showing because they’ve probably already put money into it for deposits and such. Parents can’t call a whole school board meeting, they’d have to wait because this isn’t any sort of emergency. A principal would basically have to embezzle money from the school or put hands on a student to get fired Last thing is a lot of school don’t let you do whatever during lunch, and a person posting up outside of a school with direct intent to interact with the students but no adults actually know who they are- is a cause for concern in the US because school safety measures are actually kind of whack (this is no an advocation for teachers to have guns) there’s just like no oversight at all for people coming and going unless you count visitors pass and one security guard who constantly patrols the whole school and can’t feasibly do anything while across campus

We got Debby Ryan in 1 of your movie commentaries!! Disney Channel doesn't care for a lot of films that aired on the network listed as 'Disney Channel Original Movies' yet we're released on DVD by other studios here in the U.S. such as this one.

So I've never seen this one, and it is driving me nuts... that I feel like I know Debby Ryan's face. Like I've seen her before in something, but I look up what she's done and I've never seen anything she's done before. Edit: Wait, I know what it is. I just never thought I watched that much Suite Life On Deck to recognize the actors outside of it. But that has to be it. Cuz Suite life was a guilty pleasure.

Oh, one other thing. If I would've been expelled in high school, I would've thanked the principal. LOL. I was meeting with real estate executives and television producers, signing contracts for projects that I was hired for over university graduates. Expelling me would've given me more time to do what I was already doing. About The Movie Buds, I was only hired once to monitor them. I'll admit, they are skilled DDR fanatics. They even have interesting snack choices. Definitely a pair of interesting individuals.

"I just thought it was weird that she was being sarcastic to a student." Me too, until I read a Reddit post about a teacher that would say passive-aggressive things like "Some students apparently think they're being sneaky listening to music, but they're not," instead of asking whichever student she was referring to to take off the headphones. This culminated in the teacher walking up behind the student and cutting what the teacher thought was her headphones cord and announcing, "Now, (stundent's name), please tell us what you were listening to that was more important than class." Student replied, "My last thoughts, since that wasn't headphones, but my insulin pump that you cut."

I guess I'm just a sap for thinking this was a cute DCOM with decent music when it came out; I was an adult though so I didn't take it too seriously. The overall message is definitely confusing and contradictory for kids or teens watching. It basically became '"Be yourself, unless you're shy! If you are, get your outgoing theater friend to turn you into an extrovert. Oh, and it's great to be in a band with your friends, but only if you play music that's 'meaningful'. If you sing songs about partying and being cool, you're a douche." And obviously the whole principal subplot is pure insanity. Tara wasn't inciting violence, and no one was being forced to listen to her at school. Kids were probably getting their music players and phones taken away long before Radio Rebel existed. That podcast has literally nothing to do with "violating school policy" lmao 😅

It's funny that none of you knew Gavin was the one in the sandwich costume, when his head is clearly visible. As movie commentators, I think you should go to your doctor and have that diagnosed. If you need it, I personally know a few mental health professionals in Florida that may be able to help. I checked and I may have somewhere to land the helicopter if you want to make a performance of it.
