Eric, I've kept my mouth shut long enough.... 4 years to be honest. I am not a mechanic anymore. Age 18 to 29 I was, I'm about to be 31. Been out of the field almost 2 years. When I started watching you, I had doubt, but since I used your videos for my education, I have sadly became the "go to" for everyone... I... Know..... Its because of you that anytime I take my car to a shop (I'm lazy) and they say "relay" or "computer" and I question their integrity, they quicky ask me "you clearly know your stuff, why don't you do it yourself" I just want to thank you for being one of the few and far in-between GOOD mechanics out there!!

I was a car mechanic also but had bad experience with working in shops because of the lack of good tools, information and organization. Not to mention the very low salary. Don't underestimate the incapability of "average joe". I'm active on some message boards, the number of people incapable of changing a bulb is shocking. Identifying the correct replacement is step one of failure. Step two is being able to unplug and remove a bulb where you can't stick your head to all sides while having both hands in there simultaneously. Step three is reinstalling everything they ripped off such as retention clips. I have a policy of "if you ask stupid questions about the simple parts, I'm not gonna give you the instructions, because you will fail the more difficult part). Like people asking what kind of tools they should bring on vacation in case something fails, and their list starts with "floor jack, scan tool, torque wrench, what else?". Sorry, but I think it's better if you go to a workshop if you have to ask.

I get a call from a rental tenant... "The stairway electrical switch is bad." I make the house call and remove the stairway blub. Tenant goes, "I tried changing the blub before I called you!" "No worries, just verifying..." With the bulb removed I throw the switch and check the socket with a multi-meter. Power is there! I throw in the bulb I brought. Problem fixed. Poor tenant feels awful to drag me out for a simple bulb issue. "Seriously, it's no problem! It happens."

to be fair, some bulb socket contacts are recessed deep down in the holder/insulator and some LED(CFL) bulbs have weird shaped bases that physically hit before threading in far enough to contact the center pin. I've run into that in many various fixtures types from simple keyless lamp holders to outdoor fixture, even giant chandeliers, desk lamps. just another thing to keep in mind.

I was working on a Volvo semi that had a low beam out. It is very easy to mistake the low beam for high beam if you aren't paying attention to which bulb you are checking. I see my coworker spending several minutes trying to figure out why the left low beam was out. I asked him if he checked the bulb. He said he did and it was good. I looked and noticed he had the wrong cover off. I took it off and removed the bulb. I showed him and told him he was inspecting the high beam and to go replace the bulb. Don't be afraid to ask for help and to double check your work.

Its funny how often I come across this in my world too (Low voltage electrical/security) People always assume its a bad board, bad relay... Some of those boards cost thousands of dollars, but a lot of times its a bad connector, bad power supply, or bad door strike. You pay for smarts, not hands.

@@Shiver2002 back in the '80s I was a service technician for processing equipment at newspapers and print companies... I got paid a hundred bucks just to show up and they would be really embarrassed when all I did was plug it in. It happened more times than I care to admit. He tells us the car is using ATF but he has no leaks on the floor. So the first thing we do is to check the ATF level, well it's about running out of the dip stick, way over filled. Come to find out he is color blind and couldn't see the level on the dip stick. Every time he checked it, in goes another qt. Wall has a good laugh, drained some fluid and all was well.

I just did that on my kohler riding mower. Quit starting on me right after prepping for winter lane plowing. It has a mechanical pump which I've had problems in the past. During my diagnosis I used a temporary gravity fuel tank. Once it was running there was still no output from the mechanical pump. I converted it to a vacuum pump but it wasn't pumping. I could swear I saw fuel in tank but it's under seat so just looking in filler neck. Found compressed air would force some fuel out but no flow even with line down low. Closer look and I saw no fuel. Added a few litres, some air and it flowed . Attched to pump and it pumped. Apparently my prep work didn't include refueling. On a side note I did a bunch of diagnostic work and final solution was a new plug. I had tried 2 replacement plugs but they were in my used bin and apparently as faulty as the original. Pleased to report an 80s engine with 3% leakdown.

The problem is if you do it as charity work then the customer doesn’t learn a lesson and they should, so really what he should do is charge the heck out of them so they aren’t so stupid in the first place! I also do plumbing work and sometimes when my customers do stupid things I charge them so they don’t do the same thing over again as they remember that if they do the same stupid thing over again it’s gonna cost them money. Those Sylvania silver Stars are not the cheapest headlights out there so he should be charging them as well for at least that/them.

I know an older guy with narcolepsy ....... he finally has stopped driving after he fell asleep and ran into a guard rail. Good thing it was there because if it wasn't he would have gone into the lake. Years ago he bought a really nice used van for a great price. Then he ran into a tree at a low speed and the van after that was pulling to one side. A few months later he hit another tree but this time on the other side of the front end. He was real happy after that because the van didn't pull to one side after that. It went nice and straight. True story !! BTW, if a bulb blows, I always replace bulbs in pairs because my experience is the bulb on the other side usually will blow soon after the first one blows. And I also replace headlight bulbs every year as a preventative measure. Keeps the boys in blue from pulling me over if I have a headlight out and don't know.

Great to see videos like this. I was under the impression that the low beams automatically shut off when the high beams come on. I would have assumed an issue other than burned bulbs because I didn't see the low beams switch off for me high to come on. I'm not a mechanic. Love this kind of video.

Great video! Lol, believe or not I fortunately stopped by my father-law's house for a visit and saw him and his neighbor removing the plastics from around the steering column. They were trying to get to the light switch to replace it because both headlights were out. I suggested that bulbs might be out. They looked at each other, then me and laughed. After much arguing I got a little junk volt meter out to test it, and voila,,!,,! two bad bulbs. After that I was no longer the "meathead" son-in-law. 40 years later I still use it as my trump card! 😂

I'm a trucker. Told a driver your lights aren't on. He says light switch isn't working. So I stop w him to check it out for him. He was flipping the air bag switch. Says that was where the light switch was on the truck he trained in. Sometimes it's not the light bulbs either.

I actually went to school to become a mechanic, spent most of my time, bit over 30 years on heavy equipment but I always remember a quote from one of my instructors , "as a mechanic, you have to be the laziest mother .... , always look for the easiest thing first, bulbs before wiring harness...

I had an old Toyota Crown many years ago. It had six bulbs for the stop lights. One day, no brake lights, all the bulbs failed in one go ! It never happened before or since and I had that car for 25 years.

Now that is a video worthy of “if I can do it, you can do it”. Thanks for the reminder to KISS, keep it simple, stupid!

I'm a mechanic at a semi dealership and I was given the job of replacing the transmission on a 2023 F150. Corporation customer supplied the trans and wanted it done. Ok, sure. Replaced it and it still wouldn't drive. There's a recall on them for the rear axle bolt coming loose or breaking. That's the reason the truck wouldn't move. I wasn't part of the diag, just the monkey with the wrench. Personally, I use the KISS method and then go deeper if need be.

I remember some 50 years ago, I was a brand new driver. Being just shy of 16 my dad had a heart attack, cut open for a bypass, and was in the hospital for a very extended period of time. My mother never had a license at that time so I was her transportation. We had to drive at night and I noticed a high beam out on our chevy. Not knowing squat, I talked my mom into taking it to dealer for repair. I think the total repair was under $30, but my dad had a fit when he found out. I remember the dealer charged $5 for the headlight and my dad saying I could have gotten one anywhere for under $2 and I threw away $28 of food money.

I had a car come in for no cruise control. Looking it over I found that both brake lamp bulbs, good old 1157s had burned out even though the running light filaments were still good. I replaced the bulbs and just happened to try the cruise control, and it was working again! Always start with the obvious stuff. Easy is just as rewarding as the obscure!

Eric O gets off easy. Should be the title. Wait if I, nevermind. . Great video. The switch of the scope's polarity just made it so much easier to understand. Totally agree that the basic halogen's last the longest, the blue and super-blue are just money sinks. When's the Volvo video coming out?

I enjoy your videos. I enjoy the comments from Mrs. O too. I don't have a test light so I would have checked the bulbs first. Sometimes not having stuff is simpler. LOL.

Had a night exam at UB and it was 10 degrees outside. Turned on my headlights to go home and “bink” both lights went out. No fuse, searched for some hidden circuit breaker on a 92 Lumina.. turned out both headlights blew at exactly the same time.

Those Sylvania bulbs are nice and bright, but not only are they short-lived, they dim as they age. The filaments get thinner and pass less current, which means less light. The interior of the glass getting covered in sputtered filament doesn't help either. Popping in fresh ones every December is a good Christmas present to give yourself and your ride.

If you purchase bulbs from the Auto Zones, you can purchase a light bulb warranty and your next one is free. Mine last about 6-8 months.
