I'm From Newfoundland and the tradition of screech is also a way you become an honorary Newfoundlander. as our province was originally a country that was basically just all fisher men we developed quite a drinking culture. the pirate thing as true as well plenty of pirate history in Newfoundland. I'm glad I got to share a bit because our province is commonly forgotten about or overlooked.

So I am in a Canadian Navy, and when got the do a pit stop in New-foundland at one point, I did do the Screech on my first time there, it's all true about the kissing the cod and all, but the part he forgot is what Screech is made out of...the bottom of barrels of all kind of different alcohol. taste pretty foul... but you get a Screeching certificate at the end, still have it, good times.

Hi, a guy from Argentina here. As far as I know the wine thing is only about eating watermelon and "vino patero". Which is the kind you prepare by stepping on the grapes to extract the juice. As far as I know it's not poison, but the amount of stomach pain and diarrhea make it a horrible experience. The culprit as far as I know is due to the high sugar content in watermelon, plus the "vino patero" continuing the process. Oh, forgot to add, given the nature of how "vino patero" is made, in theory it has much more bateria to continue the process of fermentation than its counterparts.

Modern sugar tolerances are probably what's led to the myth seeming more strange and harder to understand than it otherwise would be. (Especially for us weirdo Americans hearing it from the other side of the Caribbean.)

The reason why Jefferson wanted to free his slaves, but couldn't free all of them was because most slaves in the US weren't owned by people, they were owned by banks. Jefferson did manage to free some of his father's slaves, but it came at a pretty heavy cost.
