@@ButcherParry its interesting, i think the camel is similar to learning knights early on too, you just need time to learn to see the squares in your head. The issue i think is partly that its further out, you can get used to not counting for knights but further and further out your brain starts to second guess itself. Also the board being huge makes it worse, since now individual tiles are also smaller

*First excuse my poor English* but I hope Eric Rosen reads it. Hi everyone, this is my favorite variant and despite to be 1100 rated I have managed to reach the top 11 (currently 14) and I think I can give you some good advice. The value of the pieces Depend of a lot of factors: if you find yourself in the opening, middle game or endgame, mobility, forwardness, distance, colorboundness, capture etc. Besides the value of pieces its a bit diferent respect to other variants due the size of the board. Knight : 2-2.5 points only can move on 8 squares, short range atack only works as suport. Camel : 1.75 to 2.25 Colorboundness, medium range 8 jumps, but its only works as a support, defense piece and as a sacrifice of past pawns (in endgame its value is less) Bishop : 3.5-4 Colorboundness, squares 25 (in average game 15-20) large range, very useful in openings and stop pawns. rook : 5.25 support for pawn promotion, Mobility 26, moves very easily from one side of the board to another. General : 4.75 to 5.25 (endgames) mobility 16, short range, the best king's best defender and support of pawns, its value increases when there are fewer pieces. hawk : 7.25-7.75 mobilitity 33, large range, very tricky and annoying piece (both movements complement each other very well) Elephant 8.5 mobility 34, works better in endgame (capture pawns and perpetual check) is less tricky but stronger than the Archbishop queen 9.5-10 mobility 51, no explanation needed. Amazon 12-12.5 in endames mobility 59, vulnerable to camel atack, So OP, is deadly to kings. The principal strategy is promote pawns with support of Chancellor and Rooks. I2 (I13) is vulnerable (Chancellor, Archbishop can capture the Rook) J2 (J13) too, For example you can capture with Chancellor this pawn General takes obligatorily and Amazon or Archbishop x general is checkmate. Usually the The king is more safe in the center of the board. General (at lest one) is a great defender Archbishop + Bishop are great to capture control squares of promotion. You can push a lot of pawns (is risky very efective). Activate pieces is important (Amazon is so vulnerable) preferably keep your pieces defended against each other (no fork) Endgames happen infrequently, Even in a lost position a queen or the Amazon you can draw with perpetual check, passed pawns are very strong if your opponent doesn't have a piece of large range. if someone has a question I will answer it

This is awesome, thanks for this! Really great write-up. I have a little confusion over some names. Could you clarify a bit with a quick list of what pieces you're referring to by what names? I get the camel of course, & I understand the hawk to be a bishop-knight & understand the elephant to be a rook-knight, & I know I've seen queen-knight called an amazon ... but I'm not clear on whether general & chancellor both refer to the king-knight or if they're different things (at least one of those is the king hybrid, right?) & I'm not sure at all what an archbishop is or if it's interchangeable with another term, because I think I've seen it used a few different ways. Thanks for your effort in sharing all this great info! I'm oddly intrigued by this variant lol. Edit: commander -> chancellor lol oops

@ItsAsparageese
@ItsAsparageese Жыл бұрын
Is "bear" on purpose? Either way fabulous word choice for this context lol. I feel like a bear piece should be sorta like a camel, with the extended-but-finite initial charge of 3 squares straight down any row/file ... except then (just first idea that comes to mind) ending with the option to stay straight for the final square instead of doing the final diagonal square motion. Like a bear doing a fast scary short burst of a charge, then swiping wherever it wants in a burst of destruction once it arrives! Ooh or alternatively ... it could move 3 or 4 squares any direction & just be more simple that way, easier to get used to, BUT let's say it can only move precisely that much & not stop sooner & also make it have a capture effect on multiple pieces in a row within that distance without having to stop on the first capture square. Then theoretically bear among enemy pieces could take out up to 3 or 4 at once, however far it's decided it could go. I feel like that's very bearlike XD

There's 3 other variants that use these hybrid pieces. Courier Chess (which has even more different looking pieces), Capablanca Chess, and Grand Chess which use a few of the pieces described for this game like the hybrid bishop/knight and rook/knight combinations. The difference though is that Capablanca chess is an 10x8 board and Grand Chess is a 10x10 board. Courier is 12x8 board. I think with each variant adds to the level of game play that takes all standard chess theory and pushes it into more difficult territory because of the added pieces to consider. I would believe that at some point, the top Chess players should consider playing the variants if they get bored with the standard 64 square board.

"bishops are way more valuable than knights." Yes. If there are 36 pieces remaining on the board (basically assuming a few (20) captures have taken place), the average mobility of a bishop is 10.19 vs a knights' 6.37. On the standard board with a similar fraction of pieces captured, those numbers are 5.91 and 2.25. The Amazon has an utterly bonkers 29.4 average mobility.

Wow! This new chess game looks fascinating! 🤩 12:22 looks you could capture with the camel; and also if you moved your pawn passed the center line it would transformed to a queen...

The camel is a (1,3) leaper, which moves 1 square horizontally and 3 vertically or vice versa, not really powerful since it is color bounded The knight with a king's crown is usually called knighted king or crowned knight, both represent a king + knight compound. The knight with bishop feet is called a princess, cardinal, or archbishop and I believe they're more names for it, it moves like a bishop or a knight. The knight with rook feet is called empress, chancellor, knook or a marshal, it moves like a knight or a rook. The knight with queen's crown is usually called amazon, it moves like a queen or a knight, so it can mimic all moves except en passant and castling. An interesting fact is that it competed with queen for being on the standard chess set, but eventually lose since it's so powerful

You were so close to winning!! Hilarious game mode. It reminds me of Shogi (Japanese Chess) where there are normal bords and huge board variations with gigantic armies.

me personally I always like to start with Chancellor-l3, if they take a passive move instead of pushing their l pawn one square, you get the l pawn followed by the rook, people like to see pieces in this game as very expendable so they ignore the chancellor until it's pinning the general while the archbishop cuts off the escape route being on n6 as the amazon crashes down onto j13. classic checkmate.

Several thoughts on this game: 1. Should not drive out Amazon (knight + queen) too early. 2. Rook Bishop and Knight are just like pawns since there are too many powerful pieces. Don't waste too much time on these pieces. 3. Since early king attacking is no longer feasible, one should try to keep good pawn (and RNB as well😂) structure to promote as many pawns as possible.

1:20 the queen+knight piece is called an amazon. The king+knight is a general. How do you always have pieces that look different from mine?

Someone should run a game analysis on this. Obviously the analysis feature for variants like this should just have Baka Mitai playing in the background.
