This really hit home. My daughters are 13 and 17. I’ve been helping them with their math homework since the beginning. Now I can’t remember how to do math like algebra, trig etc. So I fake it, google it, bought a trig/ calculus dvd...etc. They still think I’m smart! Fingers crossed!

I think the root of the problem may be that, in my experience, the math teachers never communicate why someone should learn this stuff. There are some basic skills which you may rarely need but will be vital when you do, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions and percentages as a useful kicker. No one has ever needed to figure out when a train leaving New York at 2:00 traveling 60 miles an hour will meet a train leaving Chicago at 3:00 traveling 90 miles an hour. The reason you should learn to answer questions like that is to teach your mind to look at a problem, and not just a math problem, and analyze it in an orderly manner.

I'm pretty sure I was raised with Common Core, so I can't speak for the veracity of earlier methods. What I can say is that 99% of people I've met who weren't raised with other methods *still hate math.* I'm pretty convinced that most of the people who complain about Common Core couldn't help their kids with math if the lessons were exactly the same as the ones they got as a kid. It's the result of a societal stigma towards math as a whole because people have long since realized that it's easier to complain about math than to actually learn it.

C. 8-12 . D. More And the homework two different nights were “Write down everything in your parents medicine cabinet” and a couple nights later..... “How does the state provide for you like your parents/family, but better?” He was 14 at the time and my daughter was 17. Nope! Done Done!!!

Don't feel bad for not understanding the point of "new math" methods" The reason people have trouble with them is because they are trying to work out why you would approach a simple problem from such a convoluted strategy. New Math has thrown out the baby with the bathwater to teach a few almost useless tricks, while ignoring the foundation and principles which allow them to make sense. I will put my old math against anybody's new math any day of the week, and I'll do it all in my head. Most new math victims can't figure out simple sums because they don't have a scratch paper and fifteen tables to complicate what would otherwise be common sense. Databyter

Absolutely agree! I went from going to math competitions every year, to straight up failing any mathematical exam. The transition from middle school to high school was TOUGH for me. We had remedial training for students in the morning before they went to their 1st class. I was the librarian and had middle school students in my classes. I was supposed to teach 3 ways to solve a problem, but I taught one that they could remember. Even the most troublesome student did better just learning the natural way to solve a math problem. When we did reading I felt at home since library books were my job. Not all ways work like the "experts" that make the new ways.

I think the big problem is kids are expected to solve math problems in many different ways and to explain how they solved them. This is ridiculous as most kids get confused. When I was a student, we were shown 1 way. We mastered that one way and could do it. We did not have to explain and solve, just solve. Now today we have very confused kids except for the very few brilliant kids.

I'm the oldest of five and one of two girls. The youngest is the other girl. My parents got smart. They enrolled all five of us in the same sport: martial arts. Their logic was that we could now have scheduled times to beat each other up and it was sanctioned. Much to no one's surprise, us girls had no problem beating the pants off the boys. Of course, my parents had a special form of entertainment too: take home a giant double chocolate muffin from their dessert for date night, place said muffin in the middle of the kitchen table, and tell us it's first come first serve. Us girls won.

Yeah, I was thinking, ``more like 5 hours.'' And that's as the crow flies, if there are some good highways that take that diagonal? Otherwise, it's south to Austin (4 hours,) and turn left and drive another 2-3 hours.

Yeah, we.had a dentist living on the next street over. He always gave out a generic looking plain white tooth brush in a plastic sleeve like a straw comes in. A tiny tube of generic toothpaste. And a pamphlet on the importance of brushing after eating sweets. One year I guess he got tired of kids egging his house, and that year he gave out sticks of sugar free gum. The next year he went back to toothbrushes, too many kids stuck their chewed gum on his doorknob.😜

But Geography and History he knew better than University students on "Reach For The Top" and he had Grade 8 education in Germany. He could speak 2 languages & me not. He had a memory that was super. I resemble that! I'm 56 years old and one of the anesthesiologists I used to work for, he did all three of the epidurals when I had my kids, one day smiled and asked me, "Did you know you have Adult ADHD? Has your PCP ever diagnosed you with it?" Puzzled, I replied, "I've never been told that before. What made you say that?" Doc laughed and said, "Oh, because I have Adult ADHD too!" 🤨 I have Adult ADHD, am OCD and figured out I'm dyslexic when I transposed two letters in a word on a spelling test in the 6th grade, (which pissed me off because it was the first spelling test I had ever gotten less than 100% on) before that was a "thing" also. Kids that have ADD, ADHD, OCD and/or are dyslexic are very intelligent. They stare out of the window in school because THEY ARE BORED. Our 8 year old granddaughter is the same way. I rarely ever took homework home or studied and was in tears the first time I was given a B + on an assignment my sophomore year in high school. That B + as a grade just floored me. I argued with my teacher over it, but it at the end of the day, it was still a B f*cking +. My older brother studied his @$$ off and was a C average student. When he got a B- for a grade, you would have thought he won the lottery! Everyone is intelligent in their own way based on how they learn. My brother is a tactile learner, I'm an audio & visual learner. On a side note: How many of you know that Learning Disabled Classes and Gifted Learning Classes are BOTH CLASEIFIED AS SPECIAL EDUCATION??? READ...THAT...AGAIN... 😉 I've seen trophy's, high school and college class rings as well as military class rings. It's heartbreaking to realize the accomplishments of one person had no real meaning for their loved ones, if they had any family at all. That Batman/Adam West impersonation was spot on! 🤣 So was the impersonation of the narrator for the films we watched in junior and senior high school! OMG!!! 🤣🤣🤣 ~ APRIL LIPKE

My kids are both great people. I'm very proud of them both. But there's no greater reward than hearing them say my words spontaneously, and not catching it until they've finished saying it. The reaction is just the most delicious morsel my ears and brain could consume. And, when they say it to their own friends, I could cry and move on from this life. One time, my daughter turned to one of her friends and said this - "Darby, all of your choice have consequences, and you are an adult, so you own 100% of your choices consequences." The dead silence after that was like a vacuum in outer space. She simultaneously gasped, choked, screamed, and stifled a scream while she ran from the room. The other three girls just looked at each other. When one of them looked at me, I said, "My bad..."

All my teachers in highschool thought I was special needs, because I'd mess with them mentally/psychologically. Only 1 of my teachers knew my deal. They had a big meeting w my teachers and my mother, and told her they wanted to test me to place me in spec Ed. My science teacher told them at the table, "don't be too surprised when his testing shows he's smarter than all of us in this room combined" I was tested twice in 2 years, with an IQ of 165 But there really was a problem, I was unable to learn/understand the way curriculum was taught, I still don't know why. So today, I have an IQ of 165, bit I'm not book smart. My gift is in common sense, logic, reasoning etc... I never took algebra and I still struggle with learning via audio or text I learn best from watching and doing/mechanically learning I was extraordinarily smart at getting out of doing what I didn't want to do... I only hurt myself in the end. Now I'm a smart dummy
