It's been said that "Necessity is the mother of all invention." However, ruining an expensive, functionally sound tool when cheaper solutions are available makes no logical sense!! I assume that any common sensed craftsmen would agree that a simple C-clamp would've been sufficient for this task. Not to mention, if needs be and you have the tools (like this fella here), C-clamps are just as easy to fabricate (as is this junk here), if not easier. I mean, don't get me wrong. There are ways of improving the function of some things, but There's no way to re-invent the wheel.

Vice Grip made what is called a 'C' Clamp for just this application, this was before they started making the Quick-Grip Bar Clamp. 'C' Clamps are great for welding as they are all metal.
