Evening Ocean Hike in Windy Conditions

I hike out to the ocean on a wet and windy day to immerse myself in nature. I enjoy hiking outdoors and being close to the ocean on days like this when it’s slightly cold, and to be honest, somewhat uncomfortable. But being outside in these conditions does feel good. If the temperature, humidity and wind is just like at home or at the office there is only the view that is different. But when the weather shakes me up a bit I feel more immersed and the experience is overall more enjoyable, until my fingers start to freeze of course. Haha.

Ok, first thing first... how in the name of everything holy do you manage to keep the footage so clear with all that wind? I always get small wobbly edges etc when rigging my tripod and camera in weather like this? No back to the video.... the coastline in Norway is spectacular and you manage to capture it so well.... Everyone traveling here know that Norway is alot of weather. But to put in on film, like you manage in this video... just brilliant. The amount of work man... amazing. Haha, I know why you're asking, because it's not easy to achieve stable footage on a lightweight tripod in wind like this! A lot improved with the Canon R5, which has an incredible IBIS that works in conjunction with the lens to create quite stable shots. But since I use one of the lightest tripods out there there will be some shake to the footage. What I do is keep a wide and low stance on the tripod and if there's a tree, rock or anything that may shelter from the wind I put the camera behind that. If I'm recording the view, without me in it, I might use my body to give shelter from the wind. I have IBIS and lens IS turned on, but I have digital IS turned off (it get's confused when it sees lots of rain or waves). And when I edit I might try to apply stabilization in Resolve, but it's almost equally limited as the digital IS in camera when it comes to objects that moves like waves, so then I have to make a decision if I can accept some shake or have an unnatural warp effect. Often the digital IS (in camera and in Resolve) does a good job on keeping the rocks stable, but if you look closely at the edges in the water you might notice some warping effects. So I choose what I do depending on where I believe it's natural for the eyes to land. But yeah, it's difficult, and sometimes I just let the footage shake. If it's too stable it almost looks like there's no wind. 😄 Thank you Thomas! 😊🙏🏻 Yeah, it's extra challenging to capture "bad" weather, but also more enjoyable afterwards.
