Plugins and other digital tools are fantastic resources to have when you need them, but I 100% agree with Greg about organic sound and fixing things at the source. I've worked as a house sound guy at several clubs and I've learned so much from experienced visiting band engineers. Some of the best-sounding bands were playing with the console almost flat (minimal EQ, compression and effects) because the they were using high-quality, correctly-configured instruments/amps, with the right mics in the right positions and of course great musicians and singers with excellent technique and dynamic control. This obviously gives you additional advantages such as simplicity and reduced setup time.

Really interesting... the top promoter of Waves plugins tells us not to use plugins anymore, because the Console from AVID "sounds so good" with the biggest innovation of recallable channel Layouts :-)

They make modeling guitar amps so why can't they make a console that can model a microphone. Every mic looks the same aside of course of S M L diaphragm. You tell the console what mic you want it to replicate. I would have to agree with him though that the actual microphone would be a better choice.

@gbasilveira5 жыл бұрын
An analog console is as organic as a digital console, none have any organic compound in there. He just could not find the right word to say that he wanted a untouched sound, maybe he does not like to tweak stuff with plugins but rather with his equipment.

@@gbasilveira Digital console is going to alter the sound
@gbasilveira5 жыл бұрын
@@chrischoir3594 Analog will alter also. The idea that by having Digital your sound will degrade is not entirely true compared to Analog. A digital equipment is much more stable in regards to any environmental change such as humidity or temperature. Also, if the equipment have a great resolution the degradation is unnoticeable and filtered by the circuitry. We're not in the 80's anymore, the Digital is very good and surpasses largely the analog in many areas, if not all.
@gbasilveira5 жыл бұрын
@@chrischoir3594 96KHz/24bit It could be better actually ...
@chrischoir35945 жыл бұрын
@@gbasilveira A digital console has converters though, and they will alter the sound in a negative way. A good analog console may add color, but in a positive way. No we are not in the 80s but converters are still not cheap. A good accurate and transparent 2 ch converter is still in the $1000 price range. Fact of the matter is digital consoles still use cheap converters and cheap converters alter the sound more than you obviously realize. Sure the average drunk and stoned concert goer is not going to notice, but they wouldn't noticed saturation the from an analog console either. Digital consoles are better considering total recall and precision EQ, but saying they sound better than Analog is just plain wrong .

Wow, I don't usually disagree with older sound guys but after 42+ years as FOH I couldn't disagree more on most of what he just said. + You need to learn HOW TO listen. Get your head in the mix. If you don't learn this part go flip burgers. -The new gear did NOT open things up but rather it shrunk your options. - Line Array sucks. Every one of those boxes is hitting your ears at a different time. Ouch. - Kids today (under 40) and I'm pretty sure here, have not heard really good sound. In the 90's they stopped making bass enclosures and went to subs leaving a huge hole in the mix. Our old bass enclosures were half the sound and the driving force of the low frequencies - the part that raised your heart rate and MADE YOU STAND UP! That's gone. The old guys didn't want to carry those big heavy enclosures anymore so out they went. Now we're using TWICE as many enclosures & amps and not getting the quality we used to. 2x the weight and 2x the overall size. A whole generation, maybe two, that never got to hear "The Beast" sound that we had and loved for decades. It was this "live sound" that got a lot of bands signed back in the day. I got a call one day at 3:00pm from a FOH friend of mine to go see him at the Target Center in Minneapolis for sound check. He was using a new line array system with a band you know. His overall view was "This sucks! I can't get it mad. Where's the beef?" I agreed.
