@@LeonTodd I’d be interested to know what your signal chain is, and where the H3000 is in that path. The guitar tone is great, and I’m pretty sure that’s not completely from the Eventide - or am I mistaken ?

Nice! I just recently brought home an H-3000 from work. (We upgraded to a mixing board that has an H-3000 plugin, so the physical unit was taking up space we could use for other things.) I haven’t spent much time with it, but I do have it set up to take instrument level in and out now. It has the D/SE mod installed… but I think most of what you showed is still in there in the same locations.

Hi Leon - I'm amazed the H3000D/SX I bought around '94 is still working. Too many great patches to mention but the 8 second reverb (patch 154) and Lush Life (patch 184) are fun to use. I've read that the later Eventide models don't sound quite as good as the H3000/3500 series due to changes in the AD/DA converters used - sometimes older is better! The only downside with the H3000 series is that the internal transformer wasn't spec'd correctly for regions using 50Hz mains power. The result is the transformer gives off a really loud mechanical hum. You don't hear it in the audio path but it's still annoying. I believe the only cure is to replace the transformer with a correctly spec'd toroidal one but you end up having to drill a hole in the top panel to fit a small nut used to hold the new transformer in place.
@LeonTodd
@LeonTodd 2 ай бұрын
Yeah that transformer hum is part of the charm! I'll check those presets out!

Joe Satriani's studio side of Time Machine is also an ode to the H300! Also, Eventide has a fantastic official H3000 plugin with all the complexity of the real thing; designing and connecting the algorithms and a ton of artist presets. It's the real deal.

They are awesome units, I was lucky enough to get a H3000 ('87 yellow keys) way back when, the only downside is the time delay switching between patches, for live anyway. There was no internet back then and so my understanding of all the options and how to get the best of the unit was nil!

I'm struggling to come up with the right word for this. "Grease" is what we usually use, and that's fine, but it's somehow too coarse for the loveliness here. Even with filthy tones, there's some sort of anti-gravity effect going on. Truly great stuff.

@nicefish10
@nicefish10 2 ай бұрын
I currently own a Fractal and a DSP4000. I used to own the H3000 too. The Fractal is def good and compact, but there is something like a magical weight of the tone you get with any of the older Eventide rack gear. They are still used in high end studios all over the world for a reason. Just like the TC2290 delay, the PCM42, and the Z480L and 224.
@LeonTodd
@LeonTodd 2 ай бұрын
I really want for nothing with the Axe-Fx. The h3k is just a great benchmark that's been used on so many classic albums and is just fun to fire up, but the Fractal let's me take those tones with me in a backpack.

My interest is greatly in the A/D-D/A converters and chipsets. Even old rack units still have a more liquidy and blanketing effect that modern floor modelers. I suspect it's largely to do with the converts more than the microcontrollers that do all the heavy lifting. Even a cheap and older rack unit seems to completely strip the noise floor away because you can hear the extreme isolation of your signal's bandwidth at the speaker side. That suggests to me it's the converters and something done differently with them compared to what is typical today.
@LeonTodd
@LeonTodd 2 ай бұрын
I think it's more the analog I/O around the early converters and the engineering compromises/solutions used that gives some of these old units their character. Also excellent sound design in having really musical presets right out of the box.
