The biggest thing is really just to get out, have great experiences, and learning how to be in the right place at the right time for the best light and conditions. For those feeling disconnected because of gear, it's not getting out with a 13k camera that makes work good or better. Tom's images were just as good back when shooting on the 5D mk4 - it's the photographer that makes the final image most of all. A lot of recent videos have felt like a Hasselblad ad though, rather than just the experience focused ones of the past. I get why people feel like the videos are no longer relatable.

In addition to some terrific shots, this was one of your best teaching videos! Two of the lessons I’ve learned over the years stand out: “never leave before the magic happens” and (from the days of film photography, “it’s always better to over-shoot a scene than to try to come back later and get what you missed”.

Thank you sharing how beautiful the island of Ireland is and how tricky it can be to work to a plan, timescale or clock to capture any image. That's the British Isle's for you, wait 2 minutes and the weather will change. Sharing what the RAW file looked like and then the finished version helps to show us how someone can 'uplift' or 'enhance' or 'tweak' an image to possibly match what 'they' saw when 'they' were taking the photo, or just what 'they' prefer the end result to be... Thank you for sharing your art with us. 🙏

Hi Thomas. I have to agree with you, RobOtto was very harsh, his comment was uncalled for. I have also followed you for years, as well as other such as Adam Gibbs and Fototripper, Simon Baxter, Simon Booth, Sam J Bose and his wife Hanna, and many more. As you said, you're not going to learn something from every video. I just watch your content mainly for the adventures you all embark on, many of you cover places, I myself have been over the last 40 years, and of course, many more that I have not and could not possibly get to, owing to time constraints. It's just very entertaining. Keep up your fantastic work, it is much appreciated by the majority of us.

Just got home from Ireland and we were in Kenmare for 3 nights. Loved the area, especially the Black Valley and Gap of Dunloe. We were in Ireland for 12 days….not nearly enough time! Kinsale, Kenmare, Galway, and Westport were our bases for day trips to sightsee and take photographs. Biggest frustrations were the numerous times when there was an awesome scene, great light, but no place to pull off the road to get the shot.

Really stunning images Thomas! Thanks. One note though, at the end RAW/Edited, my own personal preference was the square crop with reeds could have done with more of the drama of the higher contrast and darker/moodier background of the RAW file left in the final edit. I found it just a tiny bit too light for my taste (granted I'm seeing it on my laptop, so I'm probably imagining things that aren't really there) AND, there's not a thing wrong with your edit, It's an extremely fine image. I did much prefer the wide-angle version of the "Shark's Tooth" though! Thanks again, now I finally have to get my lazy bum up this morning and head into the studio for my own editing UGH! But you've inspired me to get off my proverbial ASS and get some work done today!

Why? Who cares what the raw file looks like? A raw file is little different to a film negative or transparency. The foundations upon which the final print is built. Nobody cares what the foundations look like when they buy a beautiful house. In my experience, it's only other photographers who express any interest in the journey from film/sensor to finished print. Then they get bogged down in the technicalities of the whole process. Unlike the laywo/man who simply enjoys the print for what it is.

@tomcollier2444 2 сағат бұрын
Looks to me like, the only person 'complaining' about anything is you. As a photographer, I'm most definitely not interested in what a basic raw file or film negative looks like. In fact, most photographers I know, couldn't care less about same. Most of Tom Heaton's videos as far as I've seen are about the physical journey involved in his photography. I've not seen one that comes close to any kind of camera club mentality tutorial on processing images from raw to print. Obviously he thinks doing so adds some weight to the content. Fair enough, I suppose it satisfies some idle curiosity for some.

Regards your new Hasselblad. I guess you are going to run into the same problems you found with your Fuji GFX 50R, particularly the lack of long native telephoto zooms. I solved mine by adapting a Canon 100-400 zoom to my GFX using a Fringer adapter. Works flawlessly if a bit heavy.

You are correct that it would take months to really explore all of it. I like to hear you talk about composition.
