The thing that I would change about the "I can explain" scene is that instead of angry or disappointed, Alva just laughs because "You were so much smarter, you already know I wanted to do the same!" And then some of the folks in town laughs saying "yeah, this was a hell hole because of us, we don't blame you for wanting to leave, we are glad you at least did something great in the process", like, they didn't give any reason to stay until he was sent to that place. Klaus may be a bit disappointed but not that much, just disappointed that his friend didn't told him.

I think the reason that everyone was so angry with Jesper was that his attempts to explain were directed at them. If he had changed and was going to stay, he would have explained to his father. They were angry because they knew he was selfish and thought he had changed, but it seemed like he wasnt. I think your revision would have conveyed this idea better though.

I felt the same way with the confrontation scene, but my version of how to fix it was that Jesper would brace himself for the townsfolk to be furious, only for them to thank him for everything he's done and generally wish the best for him/tell him to visit (with Alba and Klaus being sad that Jesper is leaving), and that is ultimately what makes Jesper not board the boat.

I absolutely loves this movie. I love the art style. I love the fact that it's 100% hand-drawn animated. I love the character of Klaus. I love how it cleverly incorporate Santa's mythology into reality. I love this movie, my family loves this movie and this film is why I want to be an animator.

personally, I loved this movie, although I agree with you about the 'misunderstanding' trope. As an artist, I greatly appreciated the animation (it was flipping gorgeous and I loved the character design) and I saw it as a refreshing take on Christmas movies. It quickly became a favorite between me and my siblings. it spawned many fun inside jokes and we would get excited about our favorite parts. a funny thing that happened at the end of the movie when they implied that Santa clause is a ghost, I randomly said "So ThAt'S hOw He DoEs It, He'S dEaD!" still brought up to this day lol side note: if Santas a ghost then that makes me look at Nightmare Before Christmas in an entirely new light XD

LOVED this movie, the characters, and the animation. I wanted to rewatch it for Christmas 2021 but the relationship between Klaus and his wife made my partner & I imagine one losing the other, and we were both sad wrecks by the end. That scene where he’s walking away, presumably going to her, just hit so hard for some reason. I don’t know if or when we’ll be OK to rewatch it without getting heartbroken again, but it was a wonderful movie nonetheless. It was really cool to hear your thoughts on it as well!

I remember my art teacher being all over this movie and recommended it to me. Honestly really loved it for the art giving it that 3D look. That confused me so much most of the movie always asking myself “is this 2D mixed with 3D? If so they mixed them together well” and I looked it up after and I was like “BRO THIS WAS ALL 2D?! MY GOD THAT IS WACK!” All in all a pretty good movie lol didn’t like that misunderstanding part either but it was still a good movie lol

After seeing your revision, I’d say that you’re revision is definitely better and delivers a stronger emotional gut punch. However, your criticism of the pacing felt off, since it feels like they spent an adequate amount of time on everything that they needed, the town becoming better and the characters various arcs signify points of progression. It didn’t feel slow at all. Now about the movie-This is now my favorite Christmas movie. It handles characters amazingly, phenomenal animation that has the best of 2D & 3D. (Not Spider-Verse levels of phenomenal, but this is showing how movies are starting to have more and more unique animation styles and *I love that)* This also feels like an original take on Santa that is very refreshing. I like the mystical guy from the North Pole as much as anyone, but I’ve seen that played over and over and over. With this movie, it feels like a grounded Santa Klaus that could live next door and actually exist. And considering that the theme is about how average people from the mail carrier to the teacher to the woodsman can all make the world better by generosity, it’s nice seeing Santa grounded. It’s not required for a theme like that, but I love it nonetheless. Plus, it’s cool to see how it adapts all the Christmas tales into rumors and redesigns the elves to be the (I don’t know how to spell it) people, and how it ties the little girl into it. Plus, I mean… Alva’s pretty hot… 🥴

I don't have much to complain about with the slow bits of the movie, for me it was more like "I like these characters and I'm glad it gave me the chance to spend more time with them instead of getting me invested in them and then ending so quickly that it leaves me wanting to see more of them, which probably wouldn't happen as a sequel would ruin its charm.

Maybe this is a big stretch, but I think in "big snitch revelation betrayal" they were indeed sad and dissapointed but they are watched by those elders and they knew from kids they want to ruin the Christmas so they prentend to be angry at Jasper to not blow up their cover (no put intended) and also expressing their dissapoinment with exarration that would make believeable not just Jasper to make feel guilty, but also the elders who would feel pride for accomplishing 1st phase of their plan. It's only cliché when you look at from "classical" perspective. I saw that scene same way as you until I found about the present-decoy which made look at the scene from different angle. But maybe I overthinking too much.

This movie is only a few years old, but watching it has already become a Christmas tradition with me and my best friend. We put it on in the background during the Christmas dinner with new housemates two years ago and did it again this year. I just think it's really fun and funny. I paused the video at the part where you said Saami is the little girl's name to see if anyone had corrected you -- surprisingly I don't see any, so I'll do it. The girl's name is Margu, and she belongs to an indigenous people of Northern Europe called the Saami, which is also the name of the language she's speaking. You can find translations on the internet for all of her lines in the movie. I take it reading the rest of the comments that you didn't like this movie very much and your reasons, and I understand though I disagree. My friend actually hates the misunderstanding plot too, and I probably would have been more bothered if it wasn't so quickly over and done with. Another common complaint about the movie that I respectfully disagree with is the romance between Jesper and Alva being "forced." I don't like forced romance subplots, but it was so in the background here that it just felt like another thing that happened to occur and didn't detract from the main plot. And I agree, Alva is best girl (though Margu is adorable -- she should be a contender!)

@@RosMo4 No problem. I can't wait for more Ever Heard Of videos in the future. :) Just wanted to tell you that Flee is an extraordinary animated movie. It is powerful, intimate, heartbreaking and tearjerkingly moving. It even has a huge potential on making Oscar history by getting nominated for Animated Feature, Documentary Feature and International Feature, even Best Picture. UPDATE: Just been nominated in all three categories outside Best Picture at the Oscars.

ngl, I didn't expect to see a scene in this movie where Jesper acts like a drug dealer. I mean it's a movie for kids which makes it even more funnier for me.

(I know i'm commenting on this Even though its old) But GOSH the Stunning Quality took my breath away KNOWING its 2D though my brain was still tricked! Gosh! Also the small revision you had sounds pretty good i always never liked when characters go "I can explain" and then Just stand there in silence staring at eachother

I watched this movie for the first time on New Year, and I absolutely loved it, I teared up at the end. Well, the girl's name is Márgu and apparently she speaks Northern Saami, she even signs her letter and Jesper calls her name after that a couple times. I guess she understands them all, just doesn't speak english. The misunderstanding, ugh. Yeah, it's so cliché, a lazy way of confrontation I roll my eyes at. You spent 2-3 minutes being sad and blurting random words; you. Could've used. LESS than 1 minute explaining you were like that, now changed your mind, gotta think. THERE. I knew the magic wind was Klaus' wife, even blatant to me! Because that's the only magic we ever see, when pointing at Jesper behind his back, and when pulling Klaus away to finally rest. Great review :)
