"I will never be safe, I will never be sane. I will always be wierd inside, I will always be lame." These lyrics are a punch in the chest and devastate my wounded parts because they're also my truth. "Now I am a grown man with a child of my own, and I swear I'm not gonna let her know all the pain I have known!" These lyrics hit me as a parent, but give me some hope for my son.

My parents divorced when I was only 6 months old and later my dad took my mom to court and told the judge he wanted custody of my brother, but not me. Life can definitely deal some “unfair” hands. I’m lucky to have an exceptional mother and my brother is the best big brother a sister could ask for and one of my best friends, so I can’t complain. I’m not a bitter person and definitely don’t let this define who I am, but dang if this song doesn’t hit home a little (for lots of people I’m sure).

My father left when I was 7 years old. As I've gotten older I have decided to see things from a different perspective. Knowing the kind of life he has led and the kind of person he was for most of his life, the best thing he ever did for my brother and I was leave and stay away. Yes, it caused a lot of emotional pain and problems but I genuinely think it was from a place of love and not selfishness.

Daddy stayed solidly and actively in my life after the divorce. I’ve always felt quite blessed by this. I took care of him the last 5+ years of his life, and it was a golden time. I’m still missing him 19 years after his death- a far better sorrow than the alternative.

@@yelnickmcwawa5858 no, I'm not one to throw crap in anyone's face. I was trying to express that the pain and sorrow that I STILL feel through the death of my beloved could never be as deep as I would feel had it been from a life of abandonment. I certainly do not lack empathy! And having gratitude in my heart does not mean that my life has been easy. Quite the opposite.

criminally underrated band one of my favorite albums "why I don't believe in God" the last official track is my fav (there's a secret track "hating you for Christmas"). Saw them live at Bradley University In my home town of Peoria, IL the show was killer and after the show, they were cool as shit. They all ran to the bus and the bass player mooned us lol. Then they came back out and kicked it with us about 50 some kids and just hung out and signed stuff. They signed my ticket stub and my friend's shoe. One of the best nights of when I was younger.

One line describes my father, the next line describes me. This pain has been in my family for generations. Now, unfortunately I’ve passed it to my daughter. But I’m not making the same mistake with my son. I’ve learned a lot and I’ll never leave my beautiful family. I have to set aside a couple hours to listen to this because it effects me so much. I can’t listen to this without breaking down in tears.

As the divorced father of two wonderful children. I know that I don’t ever want them to feel this pain. My little sister was 9 and he spent most of his time with her because she didn't understand. I would go to my friend's house on the weekend to play videogames we couldn't afford and get food that my mom couldn't pay for. When I was 19 he bought me a very old used car that I didn't know how to drive cause it was stick shift. I taught myself how to drive it and I still have it.
