Everdell is indeed a very good economy driven, resource management game. Warning people that's what it is is a great move because it looks at face value like a really strategic worker placement game but it really isn't. It is a fun game though, I probably own better economy, worker placement and engine builder games, but it's the best game I own that does all three.
@JonnieKid2 жыл бұрын
Could you recommend some that are better?
@dasaxman12 жыл бұрын
@@JonnieKid Sure! For an economic, trade-resources-for-other resources-then-for-points, game I still think Splendor has a simplistic brilliance. If you want something with a bit more moving parts though, Red Cathedral is also very good. If you'd rather something with a bit of bite to it then Brass Birmingham is very clever and not too hard once you've wrapped your head around it. For worker placements, Viticulture is really good and quite easy to bring to the table. It also has 2 expansions which either make it more complex if that's yourthing or Co-Op which is really cool. Hallertau is another one farming one but plays very different and Court of Miracles is a really neat blend of a simple Workerplacement and a really tactical area control/bluffing game. Engine builder is a tough one because any definition is either too restrictive or not restrictive enough so I tend to go by "feel". Furnace is a very cool and very "Pure" engine builder that really scratches that itch. Suburbia blends the genre with a Sim City style builder and is very fun for it. And if you're willing to loosen the definition, I'd say Dice Forge really has that feel of improving and running your engine frequently over the course of the game. Sorry for the wall of text, hope that Helps!

Yes I loved this review. Everdell is one of our favourite games. We've played it so many times and bought 3 expansions. The depth without information overload balance is what makes it perfect, you can play it super often because even if you're a bit tired you can still play a fun game, but it's still super complex and strategic

Thanks for review😊 I purchased lots of games for my son this Christmas due to lockdown in U.K. including Scythe, Root, brass Birmingham, dual 7 wonders. Photosynthesis and Civilisation new dawn. My son gave me wingspan which I love and I noticed everdell decided to treat myself because I thought the graphics and tree so cute. I feel it’s nice to have contrast in games. Photosynthesis is great and so is Wingspan between more epic games . The light contrasted against the deep. My son wants me to play Eclipse second dawn later which I probably won’t win even if I build my ships up with all my science tokens 😂 but at least I can play Everdell or Wingspan and have a good chance of winning and most importantly having the pleasure of the game itself. Happy New Year

I'd totally watch an in depth spirit Island video, I bought it after your review and am not sure I've figured out what you mean by coming up with a grand overarching strategy. We just kind of kill the invaders as we can and react to the flare ups. I'd love to know what more we should do.
@twothefuture4 жыл бұрын
Usually, Spirit Island strategy is about picking (a) an area of the map to focus on first as a team and (b) picking cards that compliment one another's abilities, not just yourself. Ie, going with a dahan heavy, defense heavy, fear heavy, or token heavy strategy (if you've got the expansion). Not to mention that you've gotta be very aware of how your cards work together, rather than just alone. A common strategy, if you have the Ocean Spirit, is to push towards the coasts from the center outward. If you're playing with the Forest Spirit then you can be a lot more aggressive because they can sacrifice themselves to stop ravages and builds.

I freaking love Everdell... but I would always warn new players of one key thing: the first time someone plays it, they won't know the cards (or the general kind of effects the diferent cards have), so thay will have a much harder time planning combinations or exploiting them. It's always very noticeable how much a player improves uppon their second run of the game. So, always try to ease new players into the game, so they aren't affraid of feel lacking controll.

This really isn't a Euro game. It's a card based board game with slight worker placement. 99% of the game is driven by the cards.

Thank you so much for this review that explains so well what the pros, cons and target audience are. It's gonna be a great gift for my brother and his two kids, as the youngest is 12 and Agricola and Terra Mystica is too deep and the decision tree too large for them to oversee and being able to see the forest for the trees, which just leads to them taking semi-random actions of which the consequences are large but not discernible in the final outcome. Plus, a bit of chance is always a great excitement and rubber-banding mechanic! One small question though, as a Twilight Imperium fan (with way too few friends who are willing to join me for entire days): you mentioned Everdell might not be for you if you're a Twilight Imperium player, but how come? In my experience, Twilight Imperium has a similar focus on drawing your own plan yet being able to respond and predict other players' actions so you can come out on top, which stands in contrast to games like Terra Mystica or Ora et Labora which has no hidden information and exclusively impactful decisions that need to be thought out in advance. Just wondering :) Thank you so much for making this video!

I only played Everdell twice so my opinion might change in the future. For me Everdell was a little disappointing... The artwork is beautiful,, everything belongs where is supposed to, however, it is so difficult to gather enough resources to build your city and when you finally can build something the game ends. For me it doesn't feel rewarding at all, even the engine building mechanism was a bit short: I played a critter for free that triggered another card that gave me a berry, that was it. I know I can allocate some workers to my city that enables more powerful actions but if I do I won't be able to collect those so hard to get resources. Am I doing something wrong? I saw some people saying that by the time they enter the Spring, they already have 6 cards in their city, how can you do that?
@someoneelse30844 жыл бұрын
Settlers of Catan (with full Cities & Knights and Seafarers expansions added) is the best boardgame I have ever played in my life, and possibly the best game I have played (MtG and VtM LARP, Mind's Eye Theatre, giving it a run for its money). That's a very high bar to reach!

Crane is best card change my mind
@runningwithscizors9743 жыл бұрын
I mean it is the best card in terms of value. Costs 1 pebble can get architect for free while making another construction -3 cost which again has its very own free critter. Plus if you have the expansions the crane can be very useful in Pearlbrook for the keeping extra resources necessary for the wonders later on in the game by making constructions cheaper while also giving an advantage early game with the river locations being a cheap governance card that can be bought together with other cheap governance cards such as Historian, Shopkeeper and Messenger (since it will change color with construction with river locations) and in Spirecrest the same can be said for the expedition where you have more resources at the end of the game due to the cranes ability

@dasaxman14 жыл бұрын
@@burstofsanity Eh, I mean if you stretch all deck builders are technically engine builders, and engine building is one of several mechanics used to season this economic strategy. But yeah, I would say it probably has more in common with something like Century: Spice road or something similar, just with a lot of added bits.

@@burstofsanity You have resources and you buy cards from a selection to add to your collection to improve it. Thats the core concept of all those games.
