hey! I have done everest base camp. I agree with the other post who said you might be overestimating the difficulty. (you would not get lost even if you went alone. There's a lot of people there. The trails are pretty busy with porters and other locals, pack animals, and other hikers.) Actually yeah there are a LOT of pack animals on the trail always causing traffic jams haha, I hadn't really expected that. Also just a warning that you might be overestimating the glory and the beauty of it too. Yes, it's really really pretty along the way although the actual base camp destination wasn't like overwhelmingly amazing, it's just a base camp. There are a lot of other tourists and hikers around if you go in season. I hope you have an amazing time if you go but just maybe want to make sure you keep in mind like, it's a hike and that's it

also just one other note from my personal experience. I went while I wasn't my worst in my eating disorder but not the best either. I did lose weight on the trip because I had some loss of appetite and also probably used "loss of appetite" as an excuse to not eat as much throughout the trip, even when I could have had more. I did also have one day of GI upset at the very beginning which also contributed to setting me off on a negative track nutrition wise during the trip. It wasn't super extreme weight loss or anything but now with the long term perspective looking back, I'd say that the trip and resulting weight loss contributed to an overall negative cycle in my life when I got home, higher anxiety, worse personal relationships, etc. Please be careful if you go, you might need to be stronger than you might think in your ED recovery. The temporary high of coming home a little lighter is not not not worth the impact on your life

Hi Allison, thank you for the insight and advice. I have also read about how the actual Everest Base Camp is not as scenic as some think but I would be doing it "for the journey not the destination" (as cheesy as that is). I also know that I need to be super on top of my recovery and make sure I am in a good headspace. I already know that I want to completely ignore my weight and focus on being strong, healthy and well enough to get through the trek while properly fuelling myself. I feel like I have seen enough KZbin vlogs that I know the trek is not isolated haha. Thank you again for your advice!

My two cents: I think if you want this as deeply as you do, then you’ll definitely make it happen, whether you decide to go this year or in the future. Sometimes, for myself, if I feel compelled to spend money on something I feel I need, knowing it’s available later and isn’t going anywhere is helpful in setting it aside (if it’s not a comfortable financial decision right now). Also it sounds like some of your reasoning for doing Everest now vs later ie “what if I get sick” etc makes me feel like saving that emergency fund / cash cushion would be the wiser choice in the event that “something happens”. Not being emotionally involved, I think these really strong thoughts about how you need to do Everest base camp could interfere with your ability to make the wisest financial decisions for yourself. Talk it out with someone & you’ve got a community here who supports you! xx (& I think a go-fund-me could be a great compromise!)

Thanks, Tesa! I do know that I will definitely do it at some point in my life, I just don't know if it's now... I will be sure to talk it out more with people... as well as do even more research haha. I hope you have a nice weekend!

You absolutely positively need to do it. Period. Ask for the donations, it’s a great reason. I did a go fund me so that I could skydive with my father & we did it for veteran suicide awareness. I think it would be incredibly inspiring for the ED community to see you do it & I would love to read the story you write about it. ❤️

Maddie, I haven’t done the trek but I’ve been to Nepal several times and I met pleeeeeenty of people who did it. All of them said that is absolutely possible (even without a great physical condition), also there are SO MANY people doing it solo that is 99% probably that even before starting it you will already have someone to do it with (people make friends while applying for the permit and stuff like that) and regarding the equipment, you can rent everything in Katmandu. Backpackers normally don’t take all the winter clothes and stuff, they all rent it and then they give it back. Over all, I believe is much more easier and less complicated than your imagine it. Go for it!!!!

Thank you for the comment! This has been very reassuring, so I appreciate it! I have gotten over the problem of being worried to go solo as I know I would meet people and it's nice to know I can rent equipment there because tbh I cannot afford to buy my own haha. I hope you have a nice weekend and take care!

Get a Lifestraw bottle. It comes with a filter, I first used it in India… since then in Nepal, and now as my normal water bottle. I was also in Nepal in the monsoon season… the weather wasn’t a problem. I was going to do Everest basecamp with school (it got cancelled because of the Earthquake). But nobody said anything about fitness in order to do the hiking- as an adult I would totally think I had to train for it. As a teenager, didn’t even contemplate it.

Both my son and husband have both done it. The positives outweigh the negatives by a million to none. It’s only money! It’s too late when you’re 693! There is always a way. Go for it. Can you use similar tactics that you used when you decided to recover. Xxxxxxx

You seem to have done a lot of research so most of your concerns are maybe only in your head? You have experienced so many countries already! Who can say that as young as you are? I understand the money thing though but it`s also nice to live for a couple of months on a minimum to look forward to what you have then saved.... and maybe you could borrow some items like the sleeping bag ? Just my thoughts about it.... I wish you find a way I`d like to hear about it when you come back! - Oh, and your face is nowhere "saggy", you`re a young vibrant lady with a very interesting life and job!

I feel like I have definitely done enough research and am maybe just hyping it up in my head as you mentioned... I don't think I can afford to buy my own equipment so I would be renting/borrowing for sure. And thank you for the lovely comment 😂 I hope you have a great weekend!

Wow there are so many negatives for not doing Everest! However you are obsessed and will not rest until you do it. You have done the research and I believe you will be physically and mentally fit to take on the challenge. You know you will never regret it and will be an achievement of which to be very proud for the rest of your life! Like you said you need to do it now cause who knows what the future holds! Maddie do whatever it takes to get to Base Camp Everest!! Love the video 👍

You should definitely climb a few large mountains before you go rushing to Everest. Grow slow and grow strong, take your foot off the gas and try not to pressure yourself so much. Do you know Atomic habits? It is an excellent principle that you might find helpful

Ik denk dat je een te grote stap te vlug wil maken. Probeer misschien eerst een iets kleinere berg. Stap voor stap en die Everest gaat je ook lukken maar gun jezelf tijd. Fijne avond en neem je rust.

I can see the dilemma in your eyes, Maddie! I think it all comes down to whether you think its worth it or not, and I get the feeling you still haven't decided what the answer to that question is. I can see you're determined, but maybe you're focusing on the negative sides too much... ? At the end of the day, what could possibly top Mount Everest? Obviously, it is up to you. I don't think the go-fund me idea is all that bad, to be honest. It's not like you're forcing anyone to give you money, like you're taking them from their bank accounts without their permission. If they decide that they want to help you out, great. If they don't, great. You're putting it out there as an option, not forcing people to do it. Who cares what they think of you. Life's way too short to worry about that.

Hi Elena, thank you for the comment! I agree that it will come down to whether or not it is worth it. It is a big decision and I just don't want to make the wrong choice... But you're right, what could top Everest! I think if I did, I would start a go fund me... as people can make the choice to donate or not. Hope you have a good week!
