I came to this after the stream. I live in the UK and 20 odd years ago I had the honour of meeting Captain Noel in his cottage on Romney marsh. He was a true gentleman even his advanced years. Not only was he the last man to see Irvine and Mallory but he did so many other incredible things. He was such an incredible adventurer. I have just come in late, sorry Thom - I'm from Australia so get confused about time differences, lol, - but have to say it was as fascinating as any given video you've already uploaded! One thing that always gives me pause for thought is how the world sees all the tragic events on Everest very differently to those who are actually on it, and so our perspective is often skewed, being the observer's misunderstanding of the conditions climbers are forced to endure in the death zone completely. There is simply no comparison of our form of thinking to those on the mountain...what is deemed appalling to us on the ground, on Everest climbers are walking a tightrope between death and triumph, and leaving the bodies up there, doesn't mean one isn't affected or traumatized when confronted with a deceased climber. As for getting a body down, it's a risk for everyone involved. All climbers know this before going up, so death is something you acknowledge and understand before pulling on your boots to head up this behemoth of a mountain. Its sad & tragic, but it should be a pre-climb pre- requisite to have your affairs in order, your insurance reviewed and up to date, and the sobering but practical acceptance that it's possible you won't be coming home. Many thanks to youThom...the content is above reproach and very important in teaching the younger kids coming up thru the ranks, to gain a better idea of Everest and if it's in the mind of one, it's a split second to being in the minds of many others others...

... as a German Biologist - my first impression after the Photos of Mallory - Was the broken Rope facing Upwards - or Downwards? Did Mallory Abseil Irving - Irving first to go down? Did the rope brake from Load and Rock friction - facing Downwards? then Irvine would have fallen down the mountain - his body mangled...I wondered - was Irvine weak, tired, injured - so Mallory tried in a Haste to get back to the tent as fast as possible by Abseiling Irvine When Irvine was injured on the Ascent - I think - Mallory would have turned back FAST - to save Irvine - Irvine would have survived - by NOT going with Mallory Mallory may have reached the top alone.. a romantic Mystery for eternity. Highly Addictive!

Mallory's body was found facing in toward the mountain and up toward the ridge top. His arms were spread out from the shoulder almost as if he was trying to self arrest a slide. The reamins of a rope were found a round his waist and a second closer examination of his body on the mountain revealed bruising around his waist and lower rib cage consistent with sudden high load strain such as a climber would endure when a climber to whom he is roped falls and pulls the first climber down as well. These injuries could only have ocurred prior to death. The rope was old fashioned natural rope not modern climbing rope. There is no way to tell exactly how the fall happened - who fell first or who pulled who down or when the fall occurred.

listening to Odell an expert climber and geologist, no doubt about what he saw, So very probably they made it to the summit very late that day. Going on the steps of norton, and the ways suggested by him, zig zag or couloir. More over as said by 1933 team member, in past interview, the iceaxe was felt as the place of an accident. probably they were exausted, at night, without oxygen (the body of mallory was found without bottle as far as i know) and Irvine fell directly to his death, from the ridge. Mallory tried then to go down slope to rescue him, but also had an accident and broke his leg. Because as explained by the famous climber jake norton, the long distance from the ridge and the state of the body of mallory is not consistent with a direct fall... i hope oneday new clues will appear

Great video Thom, you mentioned Mallory's head injury probably caused by a rock fall, his daughter Frances married Physiologist Glenn Millikan and he unfortunately died in exactly this way while climbing Buzzard Roost in Tennessee in 1947. Cheers from England

Who were the first climbers to reach the summit on Mount Everest is a burning question. We know who the first climbers were who did summit Everest and made a successful decent. But, Mallory and Irvine, 300 feet or 100 yards from the summit when last seen, "Did they reach the top, did Mallory achieve his last quest, third time lucky along with Sandy Irvine of being the first climbers to reach the top.Sir Edmund said it himself, "I and Norgay were the first to reach the top and make it back down". Indeed a great climbing first for them, and we congratulate them, but "Who wore the boots first'. Will Sandy Irvine's boot tell the story?

This is sensitive with the Chinese/Tibetans obviously religiously and many beliefs fear the dead. Could you send a gift, in a letter, and give him a chance to think?

Now we know for sure Irvine fell with Mallory coming below the yellow band very late in the dark coming not from the ridge route that was impossible for any person at the time but coming from a long day trying to find a way to the summit on the Norton colouir not finding and coming back very late and tired and both took a fall and Irvine fell above Mallory but with time and avalanches came down to the bottom of glacier not taken or pushed by any Chinese not in the 1974 and not in the 90s. Very simple and clear now to write history. Cheers to all and for your channel as you are very honest and assertive about all facts not fiction.

Agreed, they came down after dark, they went up near the color. If Odell spotted them “going strong for the top” at 12:45pm, they undoubtedly made it to the summit.

Hey thank you for watching! Great having you here! It's all speculation as to the route they took, nothing is certain (despite what a vocal minority insist). There is an equal and perhaps even greater likelihood they took the ridge route, which is what Mallory had always intended. It's also very possible that they turned back after the storm covered the mountain and lost their footing well before darkness set in. The discovery does tell us that Sandy is down there, on the Rongbuk, and that brings some element of relief and supports that Mark Synnott, Jamie McGuinness and I have said not to waste one's money by searching upon the mountain for him. Although, of course, we could be wrong too, as it was only a foot they found! FASCINATING STUFF INDEED! Thanks again

But I am sure I read in either I’ll climb Everest Alone, or in one of the Everest books on Maurice Wilson that the Shipton team, after extracting his diary, wrapped him in his tent and sent him down a glacier… so I’m not sure how he would have been in a foetal position… but what do I know ?
