Born in 1948 I grew up with the Everly Brothers and other pioneers. I got a guitar when I was 11 years old and still play a gig once a week. I have covered some of their songs including less well known "I'm here to get my baby out of jail" from their first LP. I first saw the Rolling Stones as a support act for the Bo Diddly/Everly Bros tour in the sixties. When Don died a pal and I covered "Cathy's Clown" which may be seen on my KZbin channel. I plan to perform this song with a pal for the first time tomorrow.

My heart broke last night when I read Don died. The music he and Phil made from the late 50s through the early 60s were like a sing-along illustration of those days. They were admired by other musicians for their unique vocal stylings and those incredible harmonies. The Everly Brothers were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, its inaugural year. R.I.P. Heaven must be ringin' with those incredible harmonies.

WOW 1957 .. What an explosive year for the Birth of Rock & Roll and IT's amazing that the Everly Brothers were right there with their fantastic contributions to the Era !! They had a feel like no other artist in 57. They were right there with all of the other Greats for the Birth of Rock & Roll in 1957. This song still sounds great at my live gigs. (pre Covid) .. and it works well on the Cruise Ship gigs as well. My Students love to learn and play this song. If you need it transposed into a different key to make it easier to sing, i can help you with that as well. Gotta Love the Classics. ;-)

In the late 1950s and 1960s, the duo of Don and Phil drew upon their rural roots with their strummed guitars and high, yearning harmonies, while their poignant songs - many by the team of Felice and Boudleaux Bryant - embodied teenage restlessness and energy. Their 19 top 40 hits included "Bye Bye Love," "Let It Be Me," "All I Have to Do Is Dream" and "Wake Up Little Susie," and performers from the Beatles to Simon & Garfunkel cited them as key influences. [A personal note: my life-long guitar hero Chet Atkins played that distinctive rhythm guitar riff on "Wake Up Little Susie." After the recording Chet showed the boys how to play the chord sequence quickly for their upcoming public appearances.]

The lyrics to this song came true for me and my husband who was my boyfriend at the time. We had worked hard that day and were tried after mowing grass and cutting shrubs. We were fixing up a place where we were going to live after we married. This was in the 60's and the Lord blessed me and let me get away with coming home at 2:00 am. Love this song. This situation actually happened to me in 1963. Took a girl to the drive-in movies and got a little "distracted" for a few hours. Cleared the fog from the windows and saw that we were the only ones still there. Wasn't wearing a watch so we turned the radio on to find out it was 3:00 AM. Drove her home very quickly. Found out later that her Mom and Dad were going crazy calling hospitals, the police, her friends, etc. Needless to say, I didn't dare show my face around her house ever again. For any history buffs it was at the Skyview Drive-In in Sacramento, California. Many interesting things transpired at that place on the weekends.

***** The one thing in my "favor" was that her parents knew me because I was friends with her older brother. They just thought we might have gotten into an accident. If I was a little braver I would have taken the "butt-chewing" her dad would have given me. However, I chose the coward's way out. A good point about older music is that you can actually understand the lyrics. And not a single word about killing cops, calling women names, and general swearing like a drunken sailor. If you want to listen to a 1960's song that was considered extremely risque, find "Watch out, Sally" by Diane Renay. It is on YT. You will laugh at the story line and the fact that some radio stations refused to play it.

So sad to learn of Don s passing. I was privileged to meet Phil and Don after their concert at the Spektrum Oslo Norway on 24 July 2004 when they appeared with Simon and Garfunkel in concert. I had the greatest pleasure having seen them previously at the Royal Albert Hall London on September 23 1983. I had followed their music closely since my early days at Grammar School in England from 1957. Together with the Byrds and the Moody Blues they were my all time favourites and they will be sadly missed but their music lives on. A brilliant duo!

Was at what I believe their first public performance in Oklahoma City at the state centennial held at the fairgrounds (1956). Was there with my fiance. They were playing on the top of a flatbed trailer. Enjoyed them very much then and still like the music.
