EverQuest Guide: Advanced Loot Window

Here is the much-requested guide I've been promising on the Advanced Loot System. For returning players the "new" loot system is a common source of frustration, but I'm here to show you how to get it set up and make the most of it. I've been using it for about two years now and have found that I really like it and would have trouble going back.
Recommendation: fire up EQ and this video side by side so you can follow along.

6/21/2017 Patch Notes Update:
- The advanced loot window has a new setting, 'Show on new items only'.
- - This will prevent the advanced loot window from popping up if an item drops that is already filtered.
- - This is off by default.
- - The window will always show if something is in your personal loot list.
- - For Master Looter, the window will still pop up unless you have already marked all of the items in the list as auto ask/roll.

It helps, but it still sucks. Nothing annoys me more than windows popping in my face. And I mean it REALLY annoys me. I literally stop looting and turn everything off in a group setting, because of it. I'd also like it if a no drop item were listed as such. And even better would be any 0 value items indication. But I guess that's too much to ask from the programmers.

Thanks for this video! I came back about 3 months ago and I had no idea WTF this new window was all about. A couple of friends helped me figure it out, and there was another video that help some, but not nearly as clear and concise as this one. You made a comment about "Set all to" not being used much. I 3 box and this is the main button I use. I have one toon that manages all my TS stuff, so I figured I'd just have her carry all the loots. Each session I just set all to her name and click that button so I can skip all the individual loot filters I have set up, such as rolling for items that I use when grouping with other people. On actual items I just right click the name and give to them. If you or anyone else knows of an easier way to manage this for boxers I'd love to know. Also, you're 100% right about instantly hating the new window until you figure it out. Thanks for the video.

You know I confess what you've described is not a use case I had really considered, but what you're talking about makes a ton of sense and in a boxing situation I can see that being very useful. I do think most of the criticisms about this loot systems are due to people (myself included, obviously!) overlooking particular cases that happen to be ones they don't run into often, but other players may experience very regularly. As far as a better way to manage the window, I haven't run across anything. To my knowledge it's not a window that can be interacted with via slash commands, so I don't know of a way to hotkey repeated tasks unfortunately. If you're using something like MQ2 I assume there are ways to manipulate the window but it's not something I use personally (and it doesn't work/isn't supposed to work on my server anyway). That would definitely be beyond me and outside the scope of this guide :p

The only thing I wish you would have gone into was the "Action" column in the group window (between Status and Manage). Never really could figure out what in the world was going on there.

You make a good point. I rewatched that section of video, and you're right I totally glossed over that section. I spent a little time on Test today refreshing myself on what those buttons and the Manage Loot window do, and I began working on an idea for a shorter video to explain that section of the feature. It's actually pretty robust, but like a lot of the the system it's not at all self-explanatory. Most of us just want to be rolling through content and loot and not stopping every 5 seconds to evaluate the loot window. Anyway, thanks for asking the question, and if this works out I'll make sure to give you credit.

To my knowledge the looted argument won't work with the new system, or at least not exactly (not until the corpse unlocks after 15 minutes). I use /hidecorpse always instead.

Thank you for the video. I run my group and would like to be able just to have the group leader loot all, I can't seem to find a way to do this. Also, I can't make the advloot system stop running when I want without trying again and again, how do I stop it running? Thanks

If you're wanting to just have the group leader loot everything I would think you would just need to mark either need or greed on all items for the leader, and mark never for the rest of your group. All the items will still technically roll, so there will be a delay. I don't run a box crew myself so it's possible there are better methods, but that's how I think it would work at the most basic level. As far as turning advloot off... I think I probably used to know the best way to do that, but honestly I don't think I've turned it off in over 2 years so I'm not very confident in my troubleshooting skills there :(

Works great solo without a lot of tinkering. Looks real deep for serious grouping. What I don't like is if my wife and I just duo we can't setup some simple round-robin who cares system that loots fast like if you were solo. So we just turn it off and pickup stuff the old way. Waiting a full minute per corpse when grouped with 1 person like your friend or spouse, or having to do some item spreadsheets is a complete turn off.

You can try using the "Set all to:" drop down towards the bottom of the Shared Loot window to see if any of those options might be an acceptable compromise between round robin and manually looting (eg you can just hand all loot in the window to one of you instantly).

This was a huge help. I stopped playing Everquest shortly after Luclin was released, and I came back to the Agnarr Progression Server, and the Advanced Loot window was a completely indecipherable mess. The last time I played, loot was first come, first serve. Thanks to your video, I've been able to join my PuGs in claiming my share of the loot. Quick question: Is there a UI that you can recommend that is good for a Progression Server?

Glad this helped! There are definitely some good custom UI's out there but personally I just use the default and clean it up a bit. So far I just haven't been compelled to start using a custom one.

Hey. Thanks for the video. I am missing 1 thing still, if it's a possibility, so here goes the question. I often solo (box) plat farm, and I end up with a large amount of items in the adv loot window. In this case, FS weapons, and trash. Is there a way to with sort of 1 click, within that list, let all the trash stay on corpse, and with a 2nd click, give the rest to me? For example, 30 FS weapons in the window, 20 trash item (all the same item), would like to give all the FS to me in an instant, and then leave the rest on the corpse, without having to either right click every trash item to leave on the corpse, to then be able to set all the remaining items to give to me. Hope my question makes sense... Thanks in advance

I think I see what you're talking about, but I don't think there is a way to do that with the built in loot window in the game. If you are comfortable playing with third party tools, it's probably possible.

I'd say give it a chance. I was not a big fan when it first rolled out, but after getting the hang of it I grew to be a big fan. It is also very good in raid situations where the master looter wants to manually assign loot to a specific player. Are you going to play on Aradune or Rizlona? I'd be curious to hear back after a few weeks of using it if this is your first time.

I'm 7 minutes in and have found it useless, he hasnt even got to group settings yet. This advanced loot system is way too complicated. I just came out of retirement and once I grouped my toons together I couldnt get any of the loot to actually be picked up. Everything grinds to a halt, no body gets nothing. Log out to study up how to loot ffs, and this guy wastes 7 minutes and hasnt even scratched the surface. LOOTING SHOULDNT BE THIS COPLICATED. It sank my coming out of retirement tour real quick, quite the buzz kill.

Why would I want to have to stop, after every fight, to scroll through a list of potential loot items to decide whether or not I want it? Or worse, ignore it and never get anything. Or worse yet, be the guy everyone in the group now hates because he can't mind read to know what everyone wants/needs. This is a steaming dog turd. Just have a RNG decide and/or take turns, and be done with it.

It took me a little bit of time to get adjusted to it, but I definitely like it now. That said, this guide is even for people who hate it! At least you can know how to use it now :) EDIT: I will say that this system is FAR better for assigning loot during raids, because you can assign an item as only lootable by a specific person and also they don't have to go looking around for the corpse the item is on.

You wont have to stop after every fight thats the whole point of it, it will only ask you the first time something new is looted. so by the time you have a few levels you will probably only see it pop up as higher level or unique loot is dropped, by 40 you will likely only see it pop up from raid/name kills all while it auto loots all those gems and pp items while leaving the rusty weapons and other crap you don't want without having to remember whose turn it is. I wasnt a fan of it myself when I first saw it as its pretty ugly and seems overly complex at first glance but in reality it will prob be mostly set up by lvl 5 and the idea of playing without it and clicking every single corpse to loot will seem like a bad dream.

Sure that makes sense, in the specific condition of this not being your first run through whichever zone. More so, your first run as master looter, since it will also pop on anything you haven't set that auto roll flag on yet. (Assuming the window even opens at all, which I'm noticing it failing to do alot.) My experience so far, as a new player, is that it slows the game to a crawl. Compare this to other MMOs, like WoW, where it's one click to loot, and at worst a second click to roll on the high value drops, then back to fighting. Sure, there's going to be stuff you might not want cluttering your bags (must be nice to be rich), but that's what bags are for. And the time to pause to drop junk is a fraction of the cumulative time spent deciding for every item. And in EQ, bag space isn't even a premium, nor would clearing bags if needed. I can drop the contents of an entire backpack in the time it takes between auto attacks happening (nevermind CDs). All this does is slow an already slow game.
