Everquest old school : Part 1 - Learning The Basics of Starting Everquest

Here's my videos of a daily series of the old classic style Everquest. I go through a bit of why I play and show my Character going through some of the things a new player would like to know at the same time showing the zones in all there glory for those who have missed this game and the way it used to be. More people need to try playing this game the old fashioned way before there was defiant gear and before there was even newbie armor quests. A lot of game mechanics have changed over the years so you won't have a truly old school experience, but you'll at least begin to appreciate what it was like for the old timers who started playing the game early on before it became a non-stop raid fest. Gear upgrades were rare. Money drops were also rare. You either had to kill high level raid bosses and then win a roll against the other players in your raid group to get it or you had to have high level tradeskills to make the best items. For solo players or small groups, you had it easier in some ways but in other ways it was harder. The mobs you could take down as a solo player or member of a small group weren't as strong so the rewards were less but your odds of winning a roll were better because you had less competition for the item. Either way, there was a considerable time investment required and the gear you got from the early encounters was worse than anything with the word 'defiant' in it's name. There was actual work involved and you got a sense of achievement with every victory that led to a gear upgrade. You didn't get an item from a level 1 snake or rat that was better than anything you could have gotten from a raid boss drop. That's just cheating.

Hi Joseph, I couldn't agree more. Ive always been partial to the older everquest style but I definitely understand the appeal of the later expansions and the route that most MMO's have taken in an effort to change with the times and make a game for those with less and less time in smaller blocks of time but still feel like you've progressed. Its a different game these days on live but I wish them all the best there and since they've given their blessing and legal permission for P99 to exists those who wish for something else now have a place to come to and join the wonderful community here. As a shaman I kept yelling "Buff yourself first!" at 32:30 . Shamans buff :-) Love your videos and slowly working my way through your monk, shaman and cleric videos.

I'm just starting Everquest after getting tired of all the "newer" MMOs.... great tutorial ... I think I'll enjoy the game if I can get past the difficult UI.

Iskar, troll or ogre shaman are the best for 1999 but go troll. Ops just like to add barbarian zone is the worst staring place your could start.

+Renan Fernandes hi Reman, this version is project 1999, it's a fan run emulated server that's been given the permission from day break games to exist so no worries of the server disappearing. It's made to resemble the game as close as it can to that of the old style MMO when it was first released. It's a work in progress but is still really well run and very stable.
