This is the game I always point to when people say "technical limitations" are the reasons there can't be open worlds in games today. I loved that you could run for literally an hour and never see a loading screen. I played this game with 2 PS2's "dual boxing" with a druid and a warrior using the avatar spell to solo a lot of things. What a great time it was.

Two of my friends and I would play this game every night after work for about 3 or 4 hours at one of the friends houses. I bought two extra PS2s and copies of the game so we could just leave everything there. We colored coded the PS2s and the Memory Cards because the file EQOA created would only work on that specific PS2. Mixing anything up was a nightmare. I still have everything with the matching stickers on them. It was quiet the setup we had then being broke 19-year-olds. We were really into if for a little over a year but then life starts to happen. We didn't have time for an involved game like that and moved to Champions of Norrath and Return to Arms. A lot of wonderful memories from those games, especially EQOA. We were Halflings (0.5lings as we called them) on PPO. Warrior, Rogue, and Druid are the classes we used and every night we would find someone to join our group, preferably an Enchanter. One specific Enchanter was our greatest ally as he never missed a buff. His name was Aquintas. We were incredibly wealthy as we ran a monopoly in the auction house on Mar's Blessed Alloy.

Best thing about this game was the seamless world. There were no "zones" so to speak, and you could just strike off in one direction and see where you ended up. The world geography made sense and the further North you were the more snow you had, and you had a great desert and swamps to the south.
@jameswarner58784 жыл бұрын
No loading other than using the coaches to get across the map was great. I was very disappointed with FFXI when you went to a new zone and the game loaded. I remember a few times getting very lost in the world. Eventually they added what zone you were in somewhere in the menus so you wouldn't get so lost. But getting lost was sometimes the best thing as you'd see beautiful landscapes that otherwise you wouldn't see.
@aarongarza47694 жыл бұрын
Emergency Response Orchestra there were zones my dude, it just didn’t seem like it due to how the maps were designed.
@aarongarza47694 жыл бұрын
James Warner there was loading it was just smoother and seemingly faster if you ran rather than coaches. The coach caused a load screen to pop due to the massive change in location while running would give the PS2 time to prep for the next load in the background without the player realizing that this was taking place. It’s also probably the main reason that so many PS2 dvd drives died while playing this game until Sony addressed the issue in future model revisions. I went through about 4 PS2s that I had to send off to Sony for repair because of this game. It’s how I learned about company RMA processes. Lol.

I Beta tested this game, as well as played it from start to finish and it changed my life and my oldest & middle sons too! My middle son was 4 at the time and basically learned how to read by playing the game and doing all the outlined Quests in the EQOA "Bible" guide, lol. I cannot express how severely missed this game is by many people. For a few years I Tri-boxed, with mainly 2 Twin Magicians, and leveled up many toons with them, and just about maxed out CM's. Used to have a controller on each thigh and main, character, "Puller" in hand, fun times. The sad thing is there are many many other people with stories all very similar but yet sony does not care to bring the game back, even after fans had a petition to save it, sad sad story. They could of very easily implemented it on the PS3 or revised it for the PS4. With all the retro remake bullshit that has been going on over the past 5 years, you would think this would be the Holy Grail of remakes. No other game has been able to fill the void that this has left in my heart since shut down in March 2012. But thankfully we have the Return Home Project that has been working tirelessly to bring the game back to form. I’m on the sandstorm everyday! The crack is back!

6:47 - You didn’t need to swap out discs. You simply needed the Frontiers disc and you would gain access to the additional content frontiers provided. It also slightly improved the character models and performance of the game over the original.
@johnbenard95503 жыл бұрын
You're wrong about swapping out discs. You had to purchase EQOA Frontiers to access the new areas, and that's all you needed. You did not use the original disc anymore. All of the original EQOA and new areas in Frontiers were on the EQOA Frontiers disc, no swapping discs during play, that's wacked. You should check into the Revival project they now have a test server up and running.

TL;DR: As a teen I convinced all my buddies to play EQOA, which was a great experience. It got us the required equipment to play FFXI, all we needed at that point was the PS2 HDD. I have fond memories of EQOA. I lived across town from my childhood friends who lived next door to each other. So when I saw that commercial on TV where everybody was calling each other to "slay the dragon" I somehow convinced them all to convince their parents to buy them the game and the needed peripherals. Thinking about it now, that was quite an amazing feat, being that we were all about 14, and I was the only one with a job who could actually purchase the game, subscription, keyboard, & network adapter myself. We lived in a low income city, maybe that's why it wasn't hard to find all the required equipment for our consoles. .One of my friends was the spoiled kid, so it was no problem for him. One was average. The other was not very well off, so kudos to his parents for getting for him. Granted, for the one not well off, whatever he got, it counted for him and his two brothers. That following summer I remember buying a router, packing up my PS2 & keyboard, biking 30 minutes across town countless times and spending many nights over at my buddies house and having so many LAN parties & staying up all night playing EQOA. All this was just a precursor & training for FFXI... only difference was we all had to buy HDDs for our PS2s.

Randomly I was sent a beta disc in the UK for this after signing my details up for the PS2 Ethernet port. we loved it so much we bought the full game when it was ready. The server for Europe / Australia was called Stonewatchers and that was shutdown early like you said. What we did was bought the Frontiers disc which has the base game + expansion in one disc and we also had to buy NTSC American PS2's and get them shipped over where we were able to play until the day the game died. 😢 So happy you've covered this game on your channel 😉

The only regret I have is not playing it more while I had the opportunity. I was fortunate enough to play it as much as I did though, having gotten multiple characters capped and deep into the Class Mastery system. I met a lot of great people, and the game was a positive influence on me while I was growing up. It definitely saddens me to think I'll never go into this world the way it was back then, and that all of the items (CV etc.) that I worked so hard to get are gone forever. I'm hoping that Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen will fill that void of a chill social game with a huge potential for character power growth and character development. The world was so fantastic, and the itemization even better. If this game were to somehow make an official comeback, even if only on the PS store for the newer consoles, I would buy into it in a heartbeat. I don't think it's possible though, as I had read somewhere long ago that the company that was responsible for handling the servers no longer exists, and that a lot of the backend disappeared with it. Very sad that we don't have enough data to even properly emulate it without trying to base everything on peoples memory.

This was the first mmo i played on my PS2 except majority of us called this EverC rack because of the addiction of never wanting to log off. my old server was Castle LightWolf and some of the names i was watching through this i wanna say where names i remember seeing around i could swear i may have known. i tryed to go back to EQOA Frontiers a few years ago in hopes of retrieving my toon or toons back but unfortunally it is when i noticed the servers where shut down. But man i do miss the game and been getting the itch to wanna go back to reminance of old times. I do still play WoW still today and still use some of the names i ran with originally from EQOA on there. Would love to see this to be brought back again.

Brother this shoutout was amazing to the community of EQOA Players who want to be heard. One thing I believe you are leading people way off on though is saying the reborn state of the game is 4-5 years away, i don't believe you have insight on that part as a close follower of the group I would say the game is not but 2 years away a year if that. HOPE to see MORE from you! #SAVEEQOA #FOREVEREQOA #RETURNHOME

I hope you are right, but just want to set expectations up right, I'd rather give a longer date than a shorter one most of the time

I remember this only a little. I only played because my brother wanted to play together but he hated playing games on a pc. Still does . I thought it was ok for the time :)

Sadly the first time I ever heard of this game was when it made the news for shutting down. Here's to hoping that revival group eventually gets something together, it looks like a lot of fun! Good, informative vid on it :). Too bad this was a console-only release and never got ported over before its death, with "Classic" MMOs being all the rage right now it could have easily been brought back by whoever owns EverQuest now for a quick buck.

Is a very old game for Nintendo. One of the most difficult, yet most fun games I've ever played. Check some videos, a lot of fun waiting!!
