Should you set your preferred domain to www. or non-www.? Is there a difference?

I couldn't understand the reason. I have read somewhere it is better to have both (with www and without www) and most of giants are using both. Try www.google.com and google.com, try www.facebook.com and Facebook.com. You can same page over there. I know they have done domain forwarding, but does it make difference? Dose domain forwarding is advisable? Request you to clear my doubts. Thank you.

I completely jacked my site up. I’m ready to scratch everything and start over. I have a Sitemap that only shows one url (because squarespace) and I’m just so frustrated. I worked so hard building my site and working on SEO. I should have left it alone but instead I changed page url names and all that Jazz. It’s the most annoying thing ever. In a search result, it’s only EVER my home page that shows up even if i try to do a search for which I want one of my other pages to show up in the results. If I do a search for a specific service, it’s only ever my home page that pops up. It’s horrible. Trail slashes be damned.

hmm - since both identical as in duplicate authority then why not stay (not just be) smart and filter out the duplicate directly in the crawler script? that is exactly what modern crawlers do - they dont need a duplicate so they drop it without reducing power of overall page -
