There has definitely been evolution in training methods that shows in the improvements but it should also be noted that some of the guys like Jesse Owens were running 10.3s with "shoes" that we would hardly call shoes, on cinder tracks instead of the modern bouncy synthetic surfaces, with loose clothing that catches the wind instead of compression clothing that doesnt and squeezes in the muscles, and without starting blocks. Plenty of sports scientists will tell you that if you gave those things to Ownes he would be under 10 seconds.

You are 💯 percent correct. Bob Hayes set the 100 yards record of 9.1 seconds in 1963, running on an asphalt track, which is a faster surface than cinders, but still much slower than modern tracks. Those asphalt tracks would melt in the sun and stick to your shoes. There used to be a toy back in the 60s called the super ball. You bounce it as high as a 2 story house. This was the material that eventually became the precursor of the modern tracks.

Besides the improved equipment, tracks and coaching there are to more factors: 1. More population to draw from 2. It's now (since 70-80s) a professional business, which allows athletes to devote 100% of their time and energy towards their training and goals.

Having worked 14 Olympics the dramatic improvement in Olympic results with very few exceptions can be attributed to more than just modern technological advances. Training techniques are far more advanced than ever before and done at much younger ages. Just look at the incredible Chinese divers and Figure skaters who perform Quads like never before!

Correction. Winner of the gold medal in 1988 was Ben Johnson with a time of 9.79 seconds. He was disqualified for drug use, and subsequently 5 of the other 7 finalists went on to be test positive as well. *WINNERS**

You’re no longer the winner if you’ve been disqualified.
